Xiang Chi Dan Dan Mian: The Best Spicy Noodles in NAG!

I’m a noodle fan. I will eat any kind of noodle – from the humble, cold and delicate soba to the thick and succulent kishimen. I will devour any udon you can throw in a pot and boil. But when I’m hungry for spicy noodles there’s one and only only one kind I’m after – tantanmen.

Tantanmen are the Japanese version of dan dan noodles, a Sichuan specialty swimming in a brilliant red sesame oil and chili base. Some days – especially in the winter – I could literally eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some days in winter… I do!

I may like all kinds of noodles but I don’t eat just anywhere twice. There are so many shops to choose from that a place really has to rate high on my noodle list to make me a regular. But when it comes to tantanmen I only want to bathe in the hot spicy goodness of the piquant noodles served up at Xiang Chi Dan Dan Mian (想吃担担面). The name may tie your tongue in knots but the noodles – and I do not exaggerate here friends – are to die for.

Xiang Chi Dan Dan Mian serves up the real deal here – authentic dishes that don’t leave you wishing you’d tried that shop down the street. And while they offer up fire-breathing noodles, you non-dragons out there can easily enjoy all of the items on their menu by altering the spice level at the table or when you order.

The tantanmen here is served in a richly-textured soup stock made from fresh chicken bones which is combined with a richly flavored soy sauce. To this they add their homemade chill oil derived from five different spices and a flavorful and mild homemade sesame sauce. Of course the noodles themselves are the star attraction – here we are taking high-quality yellow egg ramen. This is hellfire in heaven my friends.

The menu at Xiang Chi Dan Dan Mian has loads of other items to choose from besides their marquee tantanmen, and their price is quite reasonable considering the quality of what is on offer.

Here are some menu offerings I highly recommend:

Shiruari Tantanmen 汁有り担担麺

Noodles with minced beef for ¥850

Noodles with pickled vegetables on top for ¥850.

Noodles with both minced beef and pickled vegetables for ¥900.

Make it super spicy for an additional ¥200

Shirunashi Tantanmen 汁無し担担麺

Noodles without soup (eaten like a pasta)

Noodles with minced beef ¥850

Noodles with pickled vegetables on top ¥850

Noodles with both minced beef and pickled vegetables ¥900

Make it super spicy for an additional ¥200

Also they have excellent yaki gyoza (fried dumplings)

四川ゴマだれ水餃子 Shisen Goma-dare Suigyoza (boiled dumplings in a spicy sauce) and 黒酢だれ水餃子 Kurozu-dare Suigyoza  (boiled dumplings with black vinegar)

For dessert try their 正式杏仁豆腐 Annin Dofu almond jelly (only ¥100 with noodles), 香港式 マンゴープリン Hong Kong style Mango pudding (only ¥250 with noodles) or 黒ごまプリン Black sesame pudding (only ¥150 with noodles)

The downside of most really good noodle shops is that like most really good restaurants they are a bitch to get to. Here friends you are in luck as Xiang chi dan dan mian have three easy to find shops located within the vast complex of Nagoya Station.
