THREE DAY WEEKEND: The Obvious Circus Calendar (Until 9/21)

The only thing better then a 3-day weekend is two 3-day weekends back to back (well, except maybe 2 3-day weekends back to back plus a handy).

However, I understand that many of you reading this will not be celebrating keiro no hi nor shunbun no hi, whether due to your work not recognizing Shinto holidays or from a deep-seated loathing of the elderly.

Whichever the case (AGEIST!!!), there’s more than enough going on around Nag-ville this and next weekend to bring joy to your holidays, however much time you have off.

On to the calendar!

Thursday, September 15

The Arabian Nights (RECOMMENDED!)

Club JB’s in Sakae from 19:00

Created by Project Stroke, this night celebrates the culture and exoticism of the Middle East with a nice mix of energetic tribal music, belly dancing, mehendi body art, Tarot card readings and Arabic clothing. ADV ¥1500 / DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

For 15 years this California band has been making ska-tastic covers of pop and rock hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s; and for starting that trend, I don’t think I will ever forgive them. DOOR ¥6000

7th Anniversary Party

MyBar in Sakae from 18:00

For 7 years, the good people at MyBar have provided a happening place for people to come together and have a great time. So, come out and show your appreciation! There will be several specials all weekend long and a DJ on Saturday night.

Friday, September 16

Naeem Johnson (RECOMMENDED!)

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

This Newark DJ is keeping the house music scene alive with his crowd-pleasing, energetic mix. DOOR ¥3000

Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00
I’m recommending this party not because I like the music, but because I have a lot of respect for DJ AGO and crew. They have seen the future of club, and it is full of funky rhythms and a whole helluvalot of bass! ADV ¥1500 / DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Saturday, September 17

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00

If heaven is a non-stop rave and God really is a DJ, I like to believe the music would sound a lot like what you can hear at the FREEEK party. For these DJs, house music is less an art and more a religion. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Black Berry

Gen’s 2nd in Sakae from 23:00

RandB, Hip Hop and House music with DJs PauloAtNight, Ghost Willy, I-Cue and more, plus performances from several ladies and drag queens. Good luck telling ‘em apart, gentlemen. WOMEN ¥1000 (2D) / MEN ¥2000 (3D)

Deep Vibe

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

A tech and minimal House party with live performances from Tokyo’s Kult Q with several local DJs.  Once again, I’m no fan of minimal dance music, but Kult Q’s unique groove is quite infectious.  DOOR ¥2000

Sunday, September 18

Charity Film Festival 2011 (RECOMMENDED!)

The Red Rock in Sakae from 14:00

The 3rd Annual Red Rock Charity Film Festival is this Sunday and will feature the works of several local filmmakers in multiple genres. The event takes place in 2 separate stages. Starting at 14:00, there will be a matinee showing of all the entries for only ¥500. Then at 19:00, the Awards Party and showing of the winning films will begin. The banquet includes all you can eat and drink until 22:00 for only ¥3000. All proceeds after costs will go to Santa and Friends Nagoya, which helps to raise money and collect toys for local orphans.

Nagoya Swings Workshop

Shooters in Fushimi from 18:00

Nagoya’s only international jazz dance group is quickly becoming one of this town’s most burgeoning scenes. And, hey, it’s only 60 years too late for the swing jazz fad! They offer this monthly workshop as a way for people to get introduced to East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop and the Charleston. ¥500

80’s Romance

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 16:00

The 12th anniversary party for this town’s best 80s party. Hey, how come no one ever throws 30s parties? Oh, right; Great Depression, Nazis and the Hindenburg do not a fun event make.  ADV ¥1800 / DOOR ¥2000 (2D)

Radix in Tsurumai from 22:00

Taking advantage of the Monday holiday is this DJ event described as highbridelectrodance; which is either the result of a broken keyboard or a spectacular explosion at the Engrish factory. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

Art Rock Night

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 16:30

Ah, the cover band; the next best thing when the best thing proves to be too expensive or too dead. This night has several acts playing the music of Queen, ELP, Judas Priest and more. DOOR ¥2000

Wednesday, September 21

Thirty Seconds To Mars

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 19:00

I’ve never really been kind to emo bands that visit Nagoya, and I’m not going to start now. DOOR ¥6500

Cutty Ranks

Radix in Tsurumai from 22:00

This influential dancehall musician is bringing his Kingston-born sound to Nagoya. Lordamercy! ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥3000
