LIFTING THE BAN
Last week I announced that I am denying the club scene the pleasure of my sweet moves until bigroom EDM’s reign of terror is toppled. However, even though many still clamor for “dance music” that sounds like a spastic child wailing on an electronic kazoo, I’ve decided to lift the dance embargo after less than a week. And while this is further evidence of my hummingbird-like attention span, it more speaks to the amazing lineup of “out of the ordinary” events happening in Nagoya this month. You can read all of my choicest selections for July in the newest NAGMAG, with a more detailed account for this weekend below; including The Sexy Pool Party on Saturday. The first big party of the summer is going to be packed, so just yell “Marco” if you get separated from your friends.
On To The Calendar
Sonic Surf City
Huck Finn in Imaike from 18:30
Ah, July, the start of the so-called dry season for Nagoya, when we get passed up for the music festival circuit. And while I’m not going to lie about how much it sucks that we won’t get any love from the impressive lineups at Fuji Rock and Summer Sonic this year, I would rather focus on what we do have this month: a lot of weirdness. From experimental electronica to freeform jazz to Sonic Surf City, a surf punk band from Sweden of all places: Nagoya in July is fucking strange. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. DOOR ¥3800
Club About in Sakae from 20:00
Good lord! Has it really been 5 years since About opened their doors? Well, big congratulations to the staff and DJs behind Nagoya’s most underground scene, both literally and figuratively. To celebrate, they’re waving their already cheap entry fee all weekend long. That’s all the techno, house and electronica you could ever want for free. Even more so than usual, About is a great spot to head when all the other parties have died down.
BJ American Bar in Sakae from 17:30
The Sexy Party continues to raise the bar for events in Nagoya, and then puts a scantily-clad dancer on top of it. We’re getting an early jump on the summer holiday with the hottest in dance music from DJs PauloAtNight, Crush Monkey, dij, scrying, M@tt, Deren, Ten and Erika, as well as a jaw-dropping dance show and the fiery flare bartenders that BJ is known for. Wear your swimwear for a free BJ burger for your next visit. Get there before 20:00 for an extra drink ticket. And make sure you get your picture taken in the balloon pool; it’ll help you to remember why you woke up in a strange bed. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000 (2D)
Coat of Arms in Fushimi from 19:30
Local singer/songwriter Brian Cullen has done a lot to revitalize the acoustic scene in Nagoya lately, and I am thrilled he has chosen this comfortable pub as the locale. It hearkens back to the days that I used to listen to Brian and all his musical pals croon all night at Bumphy’s. Those were good times. Make some pleasant memories of your own this Saturday when he takes the stage again with Sarah Mulvey, Elijah Be, and Tom Fallon. Entrance for this is event will be ¥500, with all monies going to the musicians.
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00
A seemingly impromptu Discotheque party with live music from Dan and Shu (blues), David Dycus (folk) and The Tomo Shaga Band (funky rock). DeeJay Show will be there as well with the disco. A strange combination that fits well with this month’s theme; ya gotta love Nagoya in July! DOOR ¥1000 (1D)
Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00
I’ve listened to several sets from Berlin DJ Mr. Ties, and I’m still not sure how to explain what he does. A good lesson in just enjoying good music for what it is, without getting bogged down in what to call it. DOOR ¥3500
Nagoya Club Jazz Festival 2014
Lounge & Live VIO in Shinsakae from 18:30
Featuring several talented DJs spinning jazzy, funky and soulful dance music, including Swedish turntablist extraordinaire, Mad Mats DOOR ¥4500
Flagship vol. 36
Club JB’s in Shinsakae from 22:00
Flagship is a party for music lovers who care more about dancing then being a part of a “scene.” Featuring some of the best house DJs in town. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)
Shooters in Fushimi from 18:00
Nagoya Swings “Build On Your Basics” Workshop is back with a new easy-to-remember date, the first Sunday of every month. This is a great chance to get more involved with the swing dance scene that is surprisingly vibrant in Nagoya. On this night you can get a bi-lingual dance lesson for only ¥600. Singles and couples, all are welcome.
Apollo Base in Shinsakae from 17:30
Listening to their newest single, Like A Cat, it’s clear that the godmothers of J-punk have still got it. And by “it”, I mean their proclivity for mixing odd themes with punk chords. MEOW MEOW MEOW! DOOR ¥3000
Red Dragon Cartel
Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00
After many tumultuous years playing with legends Ozzy Osborne and DIO, guitarist Rick E. Lee is finally calling the shots in his own band. This is some pure heavy metal. DOOR ¥7500
Club 3Star in Imaike from 18:00
This death metal band comes from Poland, because of course it does. DOOR ¥6000
