The Obvious Circus Events (Until 6/30)

NEXT STOP: MIDLIFE CRISIS

As a writer of all things happening in Nagoya, one of my biggest concerns is getting older. Along with the inevitable confusion about new fashions and slang (with those crazy kids and their highfalutin “kicks”), there is the added dread of becoming *GASP* irrelevant in the scene. It’s already something I deal with weekly, as the comfort of married life is a much more desirable pull then going out on a Saturday. But I do manage to get out and about fairly regularly, and few changes have alluded me in my 8 years at this gig. However, this article on my Yahoo! front page really through me off my game today. I remember buying the Cassingle for nearly every song on that list… and I just realized that many of you don’t even know what that sentence means.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to listen to August and Everything After and cry.

On To The Calendar

Friday 28

ADDITION

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Osloian… Osloish… Osloer… however you say “person from Oslo” DJ Christian Burkhardt, along with local superstar DJ Akira Saotome, are going deep at Mago on this night. DOOR ¥2500

Magnetic

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

More music from the deep end… DOOR ¥1000

Saturday 29

Amber/Copal Workshop

Five minutes from Mizuho Kuyakusho Station

Local artisan Michael Coutu will be passing along his vast knowledge of amber and copal, including how to polish these precious near-stones to jewelry store beauty. There is only room for 10 people at each lesson, and the spaces are filling up fast. So contact Michael right away on Facebook. Cost ¥1000 and you only have to bring a towel; Michael will provide the rest. At the end you will leave with 2 polished pieces, which would make for a lovely gift.

SHUFFLE

Cafe Domina in Sakae from 22:00

The diverse mix of local talent including Ago, Chris Ollier, Halcyon, Nanabunz, Thomas Lang and Zig-Nine is a damn fine reason to attend. The free Mexican food courtesy of Three Amigoes is just the cheese on top. DOOR ¥1500

David Dycus

Country Joe in Shinsakae from 21:00

I really enjoy these rare occasions when David Dycus performs live. For one, his slide-guitar-accompanied folk music is damn good. And two, it’s one of the few events in town where I am guaranteed to be the youngest person in the room. DOOR ¥500

Moondance

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00

Local DJ and producer Andy S. continues spreading the gospel of good music with yet another house party. This one features DJ Ten who is apparently a rising star of the Nagoya scene, a fact I would know if I got out more often. DOOR ¥2000 (1D)
LION

Club JB’s in Sakae from 20:00

JB’s is getting an unusually early start with this odd event. Along with the usual suspect of DJs, they’ve also got food and sweets, a Fair Trade booth and a palm reader. DOOR ¥2000

Nagoya Friends Sri Lankan Party

Red Rock in Sakae from 18:00 – 21:00

Continuing their themes from around the world trek, local social group Nagoya Friends is headed to just north of India this weekend. I don’t know much about the island nation of Sri Lanka, but I do know they have some amazing food, which there will be many examples of at the buffet. DOOR ¥3500

Sunday 30

Great Gatsby Dance

Shooters in Fushimi from 18:00

Inspired by the new film version of The Great Gatsby (which you can still catch at Midland Square… skip the 3D), the Nagoya Swings are throwing a lavish to-do complete with all the fashion and music of the Jazz Age, along with introduction Charleston dance lessons. ¥500, includes the lesson.

Mothercoat

Club Rock N Roll in Shinsakae from 17:30

This Tokyo band is the perfect blend of talent and indie-cred all us music snobs look for in a band. DOOR ¥2500

Harmonium Parlour

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 19:00

When Semi-On said goodbye to two members earlier this month, I wasn’t certain their long running open mic and art space would keep going. You’d think I’d have learned by now that nothing stops the Parlour! It’s back again, as always on the last Sunday of the month, with a number of 10-15 minutes time slots in which any performance artist, be they musician or interpretive dancer, is welcome to take the stage. There will also be live drawing by resident artist Kohei, as well as a 2nd floor art exhibit. If you’re looking to showcase your talent, drop them a line at semionjp@gmail.com. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Jero

Blue Note in Sakae

As the first black enka singer in music history, Jero has earned himself a special place in the aged hearts of enka fans as that one foreigner they trust to not rob or kill them. DOOR ¥7500
