The Obvious Circus Events (Until 6/23)

GETTING WET FEET

I don’t mind the rain so much. I’ve lived in Japan long enough to expect an abundance of precipitation around this time of year. Heck, I even look forward to the rainy season a bit. It gives me a good excuse to break out my favorite rainy day albums and catch up on my reading… OK, I sit around in my underwear and play video games… are ya happy!? To the point, it’s been raining for three straight days and that, combined with a 30 minute walk to work, has culminated in 72 hours of wet shoes. And while I do not mind the rain, I cannot stand moist shoes. It’s a good thing the forecast seems to be clearing up tomorrow. I am very close to a Falling Down-like rage spiral.

On To The Calendar

Friday 21

ROTO Sound Stream

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00

If the extent of your knowledge of 60s music begins with The Beatles and ends at Woodstock, then you will be in for a fine surprise on this night when you hear some Freakbeat, Northern Soul, Bossanova, Garage. And if you don’t like what they’re playing, the ROTO DJs challenge you to bring along your own records from the 60 to play. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Saturday 22

Budo Grape
ell.SIZE in Osu from 18:30 | ¥2,800)

The band on the cover of this month’s Japanzine tearing it up at this long-running live house just down the street from the Osu Kannon temple. An excellent chance to join their legion of Grape Heads around the world! DOOR ¥2800

Boredom

Bar Ripple in Tsurumai from 22:00

As a certifiable music junkie, I spend a lot of time and yen in record stores, always looking for an elusive LP or 7-inch to fill a hole (HA!) in my life that neither love nor alcohol can. When all that vinyl-surfing turns up fruitless, I head to File-Under Records in Osu. Owner Yamada, as Nagoya’s foremost expert in underground rock, is always helpful with whatever rare record I am looking for. And if he doesn’t have it, he will special order it. He is the nicest dealer an addict can hope for. And to thank him, I am encouraging all of you to head to this psychedelic sound bar for a group of DJs (including Yamada), slinging some primo stuff, man. Ripple is only a 15 minute walk from the JR Tsurumai station. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

KiNGONS

Huck Finn in Imaike from 17:30

There’s a zero point in punk rock. It exist in that magical place smack between insipid pop lyrics with the guitars turned up and a frontman who just screams bloody hell into the mic for 2 minutes. I like to call it the Ramonespot, and it seems to be getting smaller every year. Which is why I am so happy to discover bands like the KiNGONS: it’s solid proof that we haven’t passed the event horizon into a black hole of shitty punk music forever. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000 (+1D)

Publio Delgado

Doxy in Sakae from 18:30

This young man has created a unique style that turns a single guitar into an entire band. Highly recommended! DOOR ¥2500

MiSO SHAKE

Club Zion in Kamimaezu from 17:00

The best used record store in town (this is not a conflivt of interest, as File-Under only deals in new stuff), Recordshop Zoo, hosts another collection of punk and ska bands including Cokehead Hipsters, Free Kick, Dub 4 Reason and Ska Freaks. DOOR ¥3000

HOUSE REVENGE

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

I’m a huge fan of Tokyo’s DJ EMMA’s rocking house mixes, and am always happy when he headlines this regular dance party. To be honest, his sets are some of the best you’re likely to hear at Mago, after DJ OGAWA that is. Luckily, on this night, you’ll get both big name DJs for the price of one. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500 (1D)

GOLD EXPERIENCE

Cafe Domina in Sakae from 23:00

From Yokohama comes famous rapper/DJ Yakenohara who’s celebrating the release of his new album Sunny New Life with the Gold Experience DJs. If nothing else, the free food should make the price worth it. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000… maybe not.

Sunday 23

Emi Meyer

Club Quattro in Sakae from 17:00

The last time the lovely Ms. Meyer came to Nagoya she was kind enough to do an interview with me, but it didn’t make it to print in time. Nor this time around it seems. One day, one day, that interview will see the light of day! DOOR ¥5500

A perfect venue (and price) for this live music and paint happening which features several local bands including the kick-assery of Miggy and the New Scrooges. FREE!

Talented inkers from across Japan will be showing of their skills on Sunday to win a coveted Tattoo Circus Tombstone award, all to a soundtrack provided by heavy metal and gangster rap bands. Throw in a collection of scantily-clad women, and you’ve got yourself a trifecta of everything your mother warned you about growing up.

Story Of The Year

To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of their debut album, Page Avenue, SOTY is touring Japan. In honor of that same anniversary, I re-listened to Page Avenue to remind myself how terrible it is. DOOR ¥6000
