Don’t Mean A Thing!
This week sees the Japanese theatrical release of The Great Gatsby, Baz Luhrmann’s colorful take on the epic classic. As fans of the book, as well as the music and fashion on the 1920s, Nagoya Swings is throwing the Great Gatsby Dance on Sunday, June 30. Entertainment includes me and DJ White Bread on the decks, dropping a mix of traditional swing jazz and ragtime music, as well as an introductory dance lesson to the Charleston. So put on your glad-rags, grab a flask of bathtub gin and join us at Shooters; we’re going to party like the Stock Market hasn’t crashed. 23 skiddo!
On To The Calendar
Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:30
This guy is an electric guitar virtuoso, but can he make it talk a la Mr. Frampton? ADV ¥2500 / ¥3000
One On One
Club Mago inShinsakae from 23:00
I respect DJ Harvey for looking like a homeless man who snuck into the club to destroy the dance floor with shockingly disco house tracks. On this night he’s formed a super-powered duo with Nick The Record from the UK. DOOR ¥4000
Rock Is Dead
Club JBs in Sakae from 21:00
Though I imagine the DJs of this all-rock-all-night party would greatly disagree.
ROCK SHOW in NAGOYA
Bottom Line in Imaike from 20:00
With The Bears and Her Majesties Request ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000
Lounge Vio in Shinsakae from 19:00 | ¥3,000)
TheSexy crew is hard (hehe) at work to bring Nagoya some summer-themed fun. The very popular pole, gogo and cage dancers will all be back, along with, DJs Paulo AtNight, dij, Mai, Andy S and m@, but with noticeably less clothing! The first party of the summer is going to be the best. Don’t miss it!
Link’s Bar in Sakae from 21:00
I once made an off-hand comment to DJ scrying that, besides the early days of grunge, 90s music sucks. One pummeling/schooling session later, and he had proven to me just how wrong I was. Be thankful on this night that he will let his vinyl speak for him.
DayTrive in Shinsakae from 18:30
What little I do know about this musician comes from some cursory viewings of a few YouTube videos which, in full honesty, may not even be the right Nancy Fish. Whoever is playing on this night will be doing so alongside miiiia and a live paint show. DOOR ¥2000
GEKIROCK TOUR VOL.8
Club Zion in Kamimaezu from 16:30
Fail Emotions from Russia and several more bands I refuse to research due to a disturbing amount of child-murder imagery in their names. Blood Stain Child… really!? DOOR ¥3500
The Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00
The Tomo Shagger Tribute Band is one of Nagoya’s best and funkiest, the perfect headliners for this night featuring The Ace oaf Spade, Joe-suke Perry Project, and Obvious Circus fave, David Dycus. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00(20:00 | ¥1000)
Named “Kansai’s first and funniest stand-up comedy group” by some other gaijin rag, Raugh Out Roud is bringing the funny to Nagoya. Trust me; they’re wittier than the word-play employed in their name would imply.
Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00
A guitar, a fiddle and an accordion are all this trio needs to create their rousing Scottish folk music. DOOR ¥6000
