The Obvious Circus Events (Until 5/15)

I’m in a bit of a rush to get this out to you, because I love you all and I want you to enjoy all the great stuff going on this weekend. However, I’d be negligent if I didn’t use my power (HA!) of influence to get you all to help out local band Ghost of Matsubara as they try to earn their rightful place on stage at this year’s Summer Sonic. Head to to vote. If you need any help with the Japanese, the guys from GOM got ya covered. If you need further proof of their awesomeness, check out the music video for It’ll All Be Over Soon, wherein you can also enjoy a drinking game I like to call Where’s Danny!

On to the calendar!

Friday 10

Peter Van Hoesen Japan Tour

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

After a hard work week, many of us need to be eased into the weekend mindset. Belgian producer Peter Van Hoesen’s sets are the musical lubricant you need… I promise I will never use that expression ever again. DOOR ¥3000

Addiction For Destruction

Tight Rope in Sakae from 18:30

After the fall of communism, Russia was inundated with American culture in the form of Levi’s Jeans, McDonalds and 80s rock. Upon listening to Addiction For Destruction, I fear we did them more harm. DOOR ¥2500

Saturday 11

Nagoya Metro Party

Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00

Madam d’Metro and her wild children of the night are celebrating the return of spring at this Saturday’s May Merry Making Dance. Be forewarned! The Maypole Dance takes on a whole new meaning at Nagoya’s ichiban all-sexuality-embracing party. Along with the regular roster of DJs and floor-show shenanigans, Obvious Circus DJ scrying will be kicking the party off with his flaming hot mix. DOOR ¥2500 (2D)

Rock and Roll Live Party

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00

If you’re hankering for some live music, you might want to head down 2 stops on the Higashiyama line. The P’Factory is sponsoring 2 of Nagoya’s most loved, most raucous and most awesome bands: Duck and the Billys and the Tomo Shaga Band. Things can only get insane when you mix rockabilly riot and the sexy funk rock of Tomo Shagger! DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Mods Mayday Nagoya 2013

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 20:00 | ¥4,000)

It seems all the cool kids from all the retro parties are getting together for this one; including The Scooters from Tokyo, Osaka’s Jimmy and His Mojomen, The Absolude, Hep Kings and lots more bands and DJs. This party’s going to be money! DOOR ¥3500 / DOOR ¥4000

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

For any new readers, this event is pronounced “OARO”… which isn’t really all that much clearer. This month DJs Yamica’s house and techno party is being held in conjunction with the dubstep and techno Razor Sharp event at Café Domina. You can get into both parties for only ¥3000.

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Progressive House music is kind of like the fine wine of the dance genre: full-bodied with subtle splashes of many flavors and just a hint of pretention. DJ Ogawa’s SMASH party is a tour through wine country for those wanting to broaden their pallets. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Snack Mama

House of Crazy in Toyohashi from 19:30

If Golden Week didn’t give you a chance to cure your wanderlust, head to Toyohashi and check out the best gaijin rock our sister city has to offer. Tell them Danny sent you, and Peter of Snack Mama will be surprised. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Sunday 12

Nagoya Pub Quiz

The Elephant’s Nest in Fushimi from 19:45

If the Elephant’s Next isn’t Nagoya’s oldest British style pub, they’re the most authentic (says the man who’s only exposure to British culture is Doctor Who). Along with all the ales and brews you’d expect to find, they’ve also got some of the best dart boards in Nagoya. They also play host to this regular pub mainstay. You can put together a team of your brightest friends (or at least the one’s that fancy themselves to be), and take on the challenge of 7 rounds of questions. Entry is ¥1000 with the proceeds going to charity.
Brian Coxx Japan Tour

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 17:00

AKA The Wizard, this NY DJ is famous for his low-down funk-filled house music under the Soulgasm label. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

Monday 13

Jon Cleary Trio

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

Jon Cleary is way funkier than any 50 year old white guy from England has any right to be. DOOR ¥5500

Huck Finn in Imaike from 18:30

One cannot say that Tokyo’s Sister Paul is a happy duo. However, there is no denying that their anguish rock is awesome. ADV ¥1800 / DOOR ¥2100

Wednesday 15

Sigur Rós

Zepp Nagoya from 18:00

Given my flair for pretension, one might assume I am a huge fan of this Icelandic post-rock group. But to be honest, I’ve heard maybe a handful of their tracks, none of which even hints at deserving of a ticket price this high. DOOR ¥7800

Vintage Trouble

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

Hailing from LA, Vintage Trouble is 50% rock, 50% soul and 90% style (math was never was my forte). They’ve come to Japan to make Trouble Makers of us all. DOOR ¥5500

Friday 17 Ghost of Matsubara @ Roxx Mujica
