The Obvious Circus Events (Until 2/6)

No, this is not an announcement about another outbreak of gonorrhea, but more of a heads up that Valentine’s Day is only 2 weeks away. For those of you fresh off the boat, you might be unaware that Valentine’s Day is a little backwards here. In Japan, the ladies will make or buy a gift of chocolate for that special dude. The guys can reciprocate by taking their lady out to dinner, and, if you’re lucky, a love hotel. However, don’t think you’re off the hook, men. On White Day (March 14), your expected to provide the chocolate, and the women will reciprocate by probably not getting anywhere near your junk, unless it’s REALLY good chocolate.

The international music community is seeing a bit of a revival of late, and some of that is due to the hard work of veteran musicians such as Adam Dembyand Steven Pottinger. I first caught their new music project Duck Face last October, but these two have been deeply involved with the Nag scene for years now (SEE: Fishtank TV). And while the energy and passion of their earlier efforts is still evident, this new project has the focus and determination that only comes from experience. I expect Duck Face will be around a lot longer than the meme after which they are unfortunately named.

All this year I will be adventuring out to discover more hidden gems in Nagoya (one month down!) so if you have a favorite bar, party or band you’d like to promote, drop the details to me at

On to the calendar!

Friday 1

Matthew Plays Elton

Popcorn in Yagoto from 18:00

This local king of the cover ballads is bringing his spot-on covers of Sir Elton back to this cool acoustic venue on the FAR side of town. He’s going to sound even better in that comfy space! Popcorn is down from exit 2 of Yagoto Station. There will be 3 sets at 19:00, 20:00and 21:00. From 22:00 there will also be a bonus special request set, where Matthew will play whatever you want, as long as you’re doing the singing. DOOR ¥500

Last Call Japan Tour

Club 3Star in Imaike from 19:00

There’s a lot of rock happening at 3Star Imaike (not to be confused with the other one in Kuromamichi). However, unlike the reasonably priced but no less kickass Duck Face show on Saturday, American band Every Avenue is chotto takai ne! But you will get a set’s worth of catchy alt-pop tunes for your money. ADV ¥3900 / DOOR ¥4700

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

A techno party featuring several DJs who probably like that kind of music. ADV ¥2000 (1D) / DOOR ¥2000 (0D)

Saturday 2

Club 3Star in Imaike from 18:00

Support local music! Duck Face, The Maniac and a few other bands are providing your only dose of rock this weekend. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

Nightmares On Wax Japan tour

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

British DJ George Evelyn (AKA Nightmares On Wax) is famous for chill tunes that are heavy on the funk and light on the suck. If you’re hearts set on DJ fare this Saturday, this is your best bet. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000 (1D)

Happy Dance

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00

However, if you want to save some cash, DJs Daniel Cheah, Ryushiand Ten are pulling an all-nighter with a floor-filling soundtrack of house tunes for half the price of the Mago gig. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

Of all the great small clubs in Nagoya, Domina is one of my favorites. It always has freshand weird parties going down every week, like this oddly-named soul, R&B and funk music event. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Vertical Motion

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

The last time this techno party made my list, About gave away 4 drinks with admission. Sadly, this month you’ll only get 1, which doesn’t go nearly far enough to get me to dance to techno. DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00

DJ usus of RIP SLYME is headlining this night of hip hop. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Sunday 3

Nagoya Pub Quiz

The Elephant’s Nest in Fushimi from 20:00

The Elephant Nest is once again hosting this 7 rounder of brain-frying questions. Anyone can join and play with a team, or by their lonesome. Prizes will be awarded to the best 3 teams, as well as a booby prize for the worst. ¥1000 per person, with any profits being donated to charity. Everybody wins… except for those who don’t.

Monday 4

Super Bowl XLVII

Red Rock in Sakae from 8:00 AM

If you are indeed ready for some football (and had the forethought to request Monday off), then head over to the Rock for all the action of Super Bowl… 10, 50, 5, 1, 1… (just pick a less archaic numbering system already!), when San Francisco and Baltimore will go head to head with a bunch of million dollar advertisements in a competition of what do you really care most about. If you reserve by this Friday you can get a full breakfast for ¥500. Drinks are ¥500 a pop when the Giants are up, but get bumped to ¥550 if the Ravens pull ahead (you can blame owner Joe, and his CA-bias for that).

Tuesday 5

Nagoya Swings Workshop

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:30

Right before their giant Valentine’s Day dance on the 17th, Nagoya Swings is offering a middle of the week chance for everyone interested in learning some new steps. This is a “Build On Your Basics” workshop, so an introductory knowledge of swing dance is preferred. They’re offering 2 bi-lingual lessons for only ¥500. Singlesand couples are all welcome.

Wednesday 6

Scorpion Death Rock

Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00

DJs MOTOKI, RYO, YO-HEY, NAO take everything that was great about the 1950s, the musicand the fashion, and leave out the bad, like the Cold Warand racism. This party always has a good number of catsand kittens from Nagoya Swings tearing it up on the dance floor! DOOR ¥1500
