The Obvious Circus Events (Until 2/4)

FEBRUARY ALREADY!

Apologies to my readers for not getting an EC out to you last week; I’ll make it up to you by getting straight to the goodness happening this weekend.

On to the calendar!

Friday 29

Disco Demands

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

“Disco Demands is kicking off 2016 with heat, featuring Nagoya’s disco don, the one and only Soichiro! Put your dancing shoes on and come get sweaty with us for some deep funk, soul & disco!”

Saturday 30

Acoustic Coalition
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:30
With the recent boom in unplugged concerts, Nagoya is really becoming a songwriter’s paradise. And while we still have a long way to go getting these artists the credit and support they deserve, you can do your part while enjoying this amazing lineup: Bob Vidler, Tom Fallon of Ghost of Matsubara, Jake Shades, Mike Green and friends. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

ZOOPARK

Club Zion in Kamimaezu from 16:30
Recordshop Zoo in Osu, a premiere destination for vinyl junkies, is celebrating their tenth anniversary with ska music from local bands Charlie, GASOLINE, Sentimental Boys and many more. DOOR ¥2400

Club Beat Fountains

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

Café Domina is always my first stop on nights when the Top 40 of the bigger clubs won’t suffice.  They are always a safe bet for underground music that won’t bore, like this eclectic mix of rock, pop and hip hop DJs. ADV ¥1500 / DOOR ¥2000

POT with A LID

Lounge & Live VIO in Shinsakae from 18:30

Featuring a live performance from Tokyo band Romantic Babalu. DOOR ¥3700

Sunday 31

Acoustic Sunset

Red Rock in Fushimi from 19:30

Tom Fallon is a busy man this weekend, performing acoustic a second time. This day he’s joined by Brian Cullen and Sarah Mulvey, just the cutest duet ever. Only ¥300. Highly recommended.

Harmonium Parlour

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 19:00 | ¥1,000)

Whether you sing, dance or perform Native American tribal chants, backward, through a vocoder while accompanying yourself on the electric cello, this open mic and art space is still the best event to see and get seen by the many talented members of our community. In the upstairs gallery this month they’ve got a DIY project: they’ll provide the materials, you just have to bring the creativity. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Café Mustache

8 Ball Tatoo Social Club in Kita Nagoya from 12:00

A chance to pick up some Ballroom style from the talented dance instructors of this monthly party, along with some amazing live jazz that will get you ready to swing, pussycat, swing. DOOR ¥500

Monday, February 1

Stratovarius

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

If a cheesy romance novel could have a soundtrack, it would sound an awful lot like the power metal of this Finnish band. It don’t hurt that the lead singer has Fabio-riffic hair. DOOR ¥7500

Monday Night Jam

Gotham City Live in Shinsakae from 18:00

This and every Monday, GC Live offers all the chance to take the stage and join a supergroup of local talent for the best jam session in town. DOOR ¥1000

Wednesday 3

Scorpion Death Rock

Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00

The first Wednesday of every month, DJs MOTOKI and his crew of vinyl-slingers take everything that was great about the 1950s, the music & the fashion, and leave out the bad, like the Cold War & racism. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

All Time Low

Zepp Nagoya from 17:45

Back in 2013, the last time this band came through our town, I wrote of them: “another American pop punk band with nothing new to offer.” Upon listening to their latest, 2015’s Future Hearts that quote stands. However, the energetic electro pop of opening band PVRIS isn’t as terrible as their unpronounceable name would lead you to believe.  DOOR ¥7500

Eric Chenaux

K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 19:00

The music of Eric Chenaux is both beautiful and challenging, quite a difficult thing to pull off when you paint in the colors of “post-modern” and “experimental”. DOOR ¥3800

Thursday 4

Zebrahead

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 19:00

This American pop punk band is quite popular in Japan. But if you are unable to get tickets at this late date, just wait a while. They tour through here nearly every couple of years. DOOR ¥6500
