The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 2/26)

February 29th Cometh

I had forgotten that 2012 is a leap year until my co-worker sent me an e-vite to his long-awaited birthday next Wednesday. Thanks for the reminder, Scott, and happy 8th birthday. You don’t look a day over 4.

What’s Got Me Buzz’n: the promise of spring

Sure, the weather is lousy with rain today, but, ever so slightly, the temperature seems to be increasing. And as we draw closer to spring, I am left with feelings of anticipation for all that entails, specifically, cherry blossoms and drinking outside again!

On to the calendar!

Thursday 23rd

POLYSICS

Club Quattro in Sakae from 19:00

I’ve been harping about the Polysics for so long, that if you don’t love their jumpsuits, kooky sunglasses and bubblegum-via-new-wave sound by now… well, there’s just no helping some people. DOOR ¥3800

Jeff Lang

Tokuzo in Imaike from 19:30

Yet another talented slide-guitarist, this time from Australia, Mr. Lang’s bluesy folk music sounds of rainy nights, lost love and whiskey. Highly recommended! DOOR ¥6500

Friday 24th

Quervo vol. 5

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Cute and short in stature though DJ RS may be, don’t for a moment mistake her as anything but a serious DJ who lays down sick sets that effortlessly twist and bounce between genres. In fact, as evidenced by her recently released mix-CD Soundgirl Killa, she may have more funk than all the other DJs performing on this night put together, and there is a LOT of them. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

SAFARI

Gen’s 2nd in Sakae from 23:00
The newest in a series of nightspots to go through the “We’re not technically a club, so please don’t dance… so much” phase, Gen’s 2nd nonetheless will be rocking this Friday night with DJ PauloAtNight and others playing the best in RandB, hip hop and house. WOMEN ¥1000 (2D) | MEN ¥2000 (3D)

Saturday 25th

W-Double

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

Nagoya’s longest running drum’n’bass event is celebrating its 8th Anniversary and their very own DJ tA.hA.rA. is celebrating with a 2-hour set that will be sure to be massive! Residents DJs ZIG-NINE, Smoker and HALCYON will also be there, as will be he delicious hamburgers from Souvenir Dinner that everyone is always talking about. I am going to go ahead and call it; this is the biggest party this weekend. DOOR ¥2000 (with 1 hamburger from Souvenir Diner, available from midnight)

Synchronized Rockers vol. 21

Tight Rope in Sakae from 24:00

And just around the corner and up the stairs from Domina, you can check out some jazzy jams with bands egoistic 4 leaves and Memento Mori. DOOR ¥2500

OTONOKO

X-Hall in Osu from 22:00

Also celebrating an anniversary on this night is this techno party with special guest DJs Chris Liebing and Tommy Four Seven from Germany (of course, it’s techno!) Wai..what?! You’ve never heard of this event even though it’s been running for 13 years? Well, that may have something to do with them having their party in nearly every single club in town. Hopefully, they will stop roaming and set up their home in the new and awesome X-Hall. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

Armani Exchange Music Tour

Gen’s 2nd in Sakae from 23:00
Armani E/X (Italian fashion at Chinese sweatshop prices) has been admittedly smart about promoting their new Sakae storefront with a series of dance-music-fueled parties featuring a number of excellent local DJs. This month the party is heading to the equally trendy Gen’s 2nd and crew. WOMEN ¥1500 (2D) | MEN ¥2500 (3D)

Nagoya Friends Party

Red Rock in Sakae from 18:00 – 21:00

Always a great way to start your night, the Nagoya Friends social group is returning to the Red Rock with all you can eat and drink for ¥3000. This month, I believe their having an Italian theme, and, knowing Red Rock, the food will be delicious! There will also be a trivia game with many exciting prizes.

Sunday 26th

Harmonium Parlour

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 19:00

While others spend their time just writing about the local scene (ahem!), Semi-On creates it with their monthly open mic and art space. Besides all the great performances on the main stage, the upstairs gallery will play host to the work of Valentine Harmand. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Pub Quiz #2

The Elephant’s Nest in Fushimi from 20:00

The Pub Quiz is the beyond-logic mixing of one’s ability to remember trivia with a substance known for deterring that ability, and a tradition the world over. Nagoya’s been quiz-less for a while now, which is why I was very excited to hear that the Nest would be hosting this 9 rounder of brain-frying questions. Anyone can join and play with a team, or by their lonesome. Prizes will be awarded to the best 3 teams, as well as a booby prize for the worst. ¥1000 per person, with any profits being donated to charity. Everybody wins… except for those who don’t.

Nagoya Writes

Mondo Lounge in Kamimaezu from 16:00 – 18:30

Come and join this local writers group for an afternoon of fiction and poetry readings! As an added bonus, since it’s being held at Mondo Lounge, you can also take some affordable reading material home with you. They have an excellent selection of pre-loved books, CDs and DVDs.

Ben Kweller

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

While I’m sure Mr. Kweller’s new album Go Fly A Kite will be full of beautifully-crafted songs, at that price for tickets, this show is for hardcore-fans-only. DOOR ¥4500

Mothercoat

Club Rock’N’Roll in Shinsakae from 18:00

I don’t know squat about the headlining band, who supporting acts HOT HOT SEX and Fu-Mu are both AWESOME! DOOR ¥2500… OK, upon further listening, Mothercoat rocks, too.
