The Obvious Circus Events (Until 12/9)

IN LIEU OF A BONUS

Bonenkais are all well and good, but nothing says festive bacchanal like an American-style office Christmas Party. Unfortunately, Japan doesn’t really go in for that sort of thing, so you probably won’t be able to catch that cute receptionist under the mistletoe or hand out photocopies of your underside this year. However, you’ll have more than enough chances to get your wassail on starting this weekend with the Metro, LIFE, SMASH and Nagoya Bass Coalition parties.

WHAT’S GOT ME BUZZ’n: Thawing Out

Outside of the excess of local club gigs, the music calendar is always a little sparse in December. However, things always heat up after the New Year, and though it will be cold as a Yuki Onna’s teat outside, the live houses will be an inferno of good music! The melt starts in January with Bloc Party at Quattro on the 29th.

On to the calendar!

Friday 7th

DEEPCHORD

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

Detroit producer Rod Modell makes gorgeous techno… look, I’m not going to bullshit you here. Mr. Modell is a very talented producer, but it’s techno, minimal even. Unless that’s your thing, it will sound like one very long song is sound tracking the entire event. The live performance from Devecly Bitte might break the monotony, though. DOOR ¥2500

Epicurean

Cafe Domina in Sakae from 22:00 | ¥2,500)

I was listening to the playlist I put together for this month’s events, and I didn’t even notice when Ron Modell’s tracks ended and Epicurean’s special guest Masanori Mikami’s new song OUTDRAW began. Techno: really not my thing. DOOR ¥2500

Saturday 8th

The Metro Party

Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00

Now this is what this month has been missing so far: house music! And while DJ e-M might splash in the occasional top 40 track, the riotously wild METRO scene is still the best party this and every second Saturday. Get your holiday season started off right! DOOR ¥2500 (2D)

Nagoya Bass Coalition

Café Domina in Sakae from 20:00

I’ve been slowly warming up to the bass heavier dance genres this year, mostly in part to the prolificacy of talented DJs such as Smoker, Halcyon, Skullduggery and Zig-Nine. Their blend of the frenetic rhythm-scape that is DnB, breakbeat and hip-hop is a gateway drug. This night also features live performances from Danny and Taro and Vinny Vantage. DOOR ¥2000

LIFE

Gala in Tsu from 22:00

DJs Andy S, scrying, m@ and several others will be spinning their wares to raise money for the leukemia-related charity Yuuki no Kai this Saturday. Tsu is less than an hour train ride from Nagoya, and supports a tight-knit group of locals who love a good time. If the Mie nightlife had a ringleader, it would DJ/promoter Matt Stanton who has worked non-stop to bring the best dance music to parties there and here. And it’s with that same energy that he has put together this night dedicated to those suffering from this terrible disease. Entry is only ¥1500, and they will be serving champagne and snacks around midnight.

Nagoya International Speed Dating

The Red Rock in Sakae from 18:00

It’s often said that Japan misses the point of Christmas entirely, but I think their traditions are not too far off. I mean, nothing says Christmas more than a young couple trying desperately to find room when all the inns in town are full. However, Christmas in Japan can be quite lonely without that special someone, which is where this seasonal Nagoya Friends event comes in. It’s like normal dating except it takes that awkward initial meet and greet, compresses it down to 10 minutes and forces you to do it 10 times in a single night. ADV ¥2500 (men) and ¥2000 (women) / DOOR +¥500 (1D + food)

SMASH

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

This progressive house party has had a busy year, and their going out with a BANG with excellent tunes via DJs OGAWA, Nick Edges, Tom Langford and more. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR 2500 (1D)

Depict

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

A low-key tech house party with a live paint show to boot. Should be fun. DOOR ¥3000

Human Writes

My English Room in Sakae from 17:30

In honor of International Human Rights Day (12/10), Amnesty International is organizing an English letter writing marathon. All you have to do is write a letter to help continue this agency’s worthwhile goal of freeing political prisoners across the globe. The event is free.

DA’z

Mars Bar in Sakae(?) from 20:00

I don’t have all the info on this one (shocking, I know), but it seems to be a punk and skate night featuring DJ Kana and others. I’ve never been to Mars before, but if I understand this crudely drawn map (sorry, Steve) correctly, then it is between Wakamiya and Hirokoji, down the street from the giant flaming skull. FREE

Sunday 9th

TIGA

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

This Juno Award-winning producer is famous for the electro house anthem You Gonna Want Me as well as several others. Prepare to dance like it’s 2007. DOOR ¥3000

SPACE X’MAS Tour 2012

Apollo Theater in Shinsakae from 17:30

SHONEN KNIFE is back with their 18th studio album, Pop Tune. Their annual Space X’Mas tour is a great chance for fans new and very old aike to enjoy their delightful blend of punk chords and saccharine-sweet harmonies. DOOR ¥3000
