The Obvious Circus Events (Until 12/31)

I’m quite tired of all this Mayan calendar hullabaloo, but if the world does happen to end on the 21st [nope – ed] you might want to make sure to at least have a decent last meal. And for my money, there’s no better one then a Christmas feast. This year, the Turkey dinners can be had at the Red Rock (23rd-25th), The 59’s (20th-25th) and Shooters (21st-25th).

That’s right, faithful readers (all two of you… Hi, mom!) The hardest working music journalist in Nagoya is taking a two week sabbatical from his duties. I’ll still be in town, but I figured I’d end the year actually enjoying some of these parties I devote my extra time to hyping. So, if you see me out and about these next few weekends, feel free to by me a drink in thanks for keeping you in the loop. And lest you fear going without me for so long, I’ve included every event I could find until the New Year in this week’s E.C.

See you in 2013… unless a snake-clad sun god devours us all before then!

On to the calendar!

Friday 28th

Green Thumb

Club Zion in Kamimaezu from 18:00

A catholic (thank you, Word-A-Day) music experience featuring pop-punk from Sunny Side Walker, the alt-rock of ShiawasenoAoiTori and some good ol’ funk rock from Golden Whiskey Jam Sound. This is an affordable chance to check out some of the new NAG bands. DOOR ¥1800

Saturday 29th

Last Gig Of The Year

Tight Rope in Sakae from 19:00

You’ll have to forgive me; I must be slowing down in my old age, because I only recently learned of this kickass cover band! And this is your last chance of 2012 to catch The McCollum Band rock faces off. I’m looking forward to hearing more from these guys in the New Year. DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Mr. G

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00
Colin “Mr. G” McBean is a veteran of the London techno scene, and he’s developed a unique sound that incorporates the hi-energy of 90s club music with the appreciation of tech samples and loops of the millennium. Check out his track The After Effect, and then check out his set at JB’s to properly kick off your New Year weekend. DOOR ¥3000

Cafe Domina in Sakae from 22:00

OK, this is getting ridiculous. Just how many gigs can Zig-Nine and Smoker pack into one month?! Luckily for them the talented tA.hA.rA will be along to give them a small break from dropping bass-bombs on the dance floor. DOOR ¥1500

はにまるNITE vol.4
Club Edits in Sakae from 12:30

Hell, I didn’t even know Edits was still open, or that they were hosting what seems to be an insane asylum of a night with too many DJs to name and a live paint show. DOOR ¥2000

Recordshop Zoo 6th Anniversary

Club Zion in Kamimaezi from 13:00 | ¥2,000)

Nagoya’s best RandR vinyl shop has had a very busy year, and they’re celebrating their success with another of their talent-packed live shows featuring The Ants, ska-rific The Fatness, the punk rock of My Shoes My Cap, and the even better punk rock of Sunny Branch. DOOR ¥2000

Saturday 30th

Timmy Regisford

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

“Legendary”; there is simply no better way to describe the impact that Timmy Regisford has had on the dance music since he started his Shelter Parties in New York City back in the 90s. There’s a reason they call him “The Maestro”, and his soulful house sets are not to be missed. DOOR ¥3500

Sunday 31st

The Obvious Circus Countdown Party

Shooters in Fushimi from 20:00

It’s been one helluva year for the O.C. Between the two of them, DJs dij and scrying have played a ton of this year’s biggest events (mostly, Will… that guy is everywhere!) To close out 2012, they will be together for a 5 hour mix of the only music you want to hear on this night. Shooters will be serving up a heaping of party foods, an open bar and a champagne toast at midnight. Once the party shuts down at 1:00 AM, join us down the road at the Osu Kannon temple for a traditional Hatsumode!

Countdown Party

Red Rock in Sakae from 20:00

For some damn good live music, The Michael Wade Band will be rocking in the New Year at the Nagoya true Aussie hangout. Along with the always amazing cuisine, the welcoming staff and affable crowd, the Red Rock has reinvented itself; and it is my #1choice for places to watch in 2013!

Countdown Party

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:30

An all-star lineup of PF DJs including Massa, Daniel Cheah, Nick Shotter and more. With pole dancer Mia. DOOR ¥2000 (2D)

New Year’s Eve

MyBar in Sakae from 18:00

No cover charge with DJ Kosei all night long.
