The Obvious Circus Events (Until 12/16)

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

Though the end of the year is drawing near, our vibrant community isn’t done with 2014 just yet. So don’t while away your holiday under a haze of eggnog and holiday TV specials; get out and enjoy the feast of music being served up by Nagoya’s talented artists.

On To The Calendar

Thursday 11

Tahiti 80
Bottom Line in Imaike from 18:00
As dreamy as their pop music is, I don’t think my wallet would forgive me for paying that much to hear this French band live. DOOR ¥6500

The Pinballs
Club R.A.D. in Sakae from 18:30
I honestly intended to review the new album from this garage rock band, the awesomely named Donkey Knows What Is Love, but the first single reminded me so much of The Strokes that I listened to Is This It instead. It seemed a better use of my time. DOOR ¥3000

Friday 12

Funky Fresh
Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 22:00
Japan’s not the most forward thinking of countries in its best moments, but I still don’t understand why clubs insist on describing events catering to Motown, blues and R&B as “Black Music”. I love you, Club Buddha. But get your shit together, man.

Saturday 13

Club Metro
Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00
As one of the biggest date nights of the year, there is no shortage of Christmas-themed events happening this month. But the Nagoya Metro Party’s HoliGay Antics is the place you want to attend if you’re looking to don your gay apparel (or straight, The Metro party is for everyone!). With the wildest floor show including pole dancing and enough drag queens to stage a production of To Wong Foo…Nagoya’s groundbreaking gay, lesbian et al party is at the top of the list of best parties happening this and every month. DOOR ¥2500 (2D)

Joe Clausell
Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00
The second Saturday of the month is usually the best night to get out and shake what your momma gave ya, but I cannot remember a time when so much international talent was performing on the same night. First up there’s Brooklyn-raised, producer and DJ Joaquin ‘Joe’ Claussell and his deep & soulful house tracks. ¥3500

MARS
Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00
If you prefer your house music on the funky side, Detroit house pioneer Alton Miller has got what you need. DOOR ¥3000

SMASH DX
Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00
And finally, the progressive house of Argentinean producer Hernán Cattáneo has long been a favorite for the SMASH fans, second only to the zealous love they hold for DJ OGAWA. DOOR ¥3500

Rock Show vol. 5
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00
But if you wannna rock… DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Sunday 14

Songwriters & Storytellers
Gotham City Live in Shinsakae from 18:30
GC Live is quickly becoming THE spot for live local music. On this night they are spotlighting some of Nagoya’s most talented songwriters, Xandra Corpora, David Dycus and Bob Vidler, in a style akin to VH1 Storytellers. So come and hear their beautiful music and the tales behind it all. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Eklypse Band Live
Lea Lea Hale in Fushimi from 20:00
A supergroup is formed when established stars come together to form a band straight out of a music nerd’s fan-fiction. Some of the greatest in history include CSNY, The Travelling Wilburys, Temple of the Dog, The Postal Service (fuck you naysayers, they rock) and every band Eric Clapton has been a member of. The Eklypse Band is the Nagoya supergroup, featuring some of our most notable musicians: Adam Demby, Lesley Bartlett, Ali G, Denise Hewitt, and Andre Murch. Their floor-filling covers of pop, rock and R&B faves will make this year’s IPE Academy Christmas party the best yet. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Tuesday 16

Salena Jones
Blue Note in Sakae from 19:00
This lovely legend of the cabaret is very popular over here, and seemingly tours Japan non-stop. So if you miss her soulful take on jazz and pop classics, just wait a bit. She’ll come around again. DOOR ¥8000
