The Obvious Circus Events (Until 1/16)

SO… WHAT NOW?

Like Linus in the pumpkin patch, I wasted the holiday waiting on the return of some great mythical creature, only to realize that the world did not end and now I have to get back to work.  And while there were a few choice bits of excellence last year, as a whole, 2012 sucked.  However, 2013 has yet to disappoint me, so I remain cautiously optimistic.

RESOLVE TO EVOLVE

In fact, I think it’s time I spent a little less time tearing down, and a bit more time working to remember why I love this community so much.  So, instead of bitching about all the great nightspots that are no longer, I’m going to go out and find new and better ones.  Less time spent talking about bands that suck, and more effort showcasing the ones that don’t.  It’s a New Year, Nagoya!  And this is going to be a whole new Events Calendar… starting next week.  Hey, I have to change the logo at some point.

On to the calendar!

Friday 11th

Sigh

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 18:30

London’s ULTERIOR along with fellow newer wave bands The Novembers and Lillies and Remains are a dichotomy of dreary lyrics and catchy riffs.  This event is aptly named for the sound the emo crowd makes in lieu of cheers.  DOOR ¥3300

Dandy Rhythm

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 21:00

Buddha’s battle plan of late seems to be “rock and awe-some”; taking a selection of the best DJs from various popular RandR nights and setting them loose on the crowd.  DOOR ¥2000

Carl Craig Japan Tour

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00
This innovative Detroit house producer returns to Nagoya along with local DJs JAGUAR P and Yuma.  ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

individual x PULSE

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Mnimal techno producer Milton Bradley is also returning to Nagoya, and he’s doing an extra-long set with fellow Berlin DJ Henning Baer.  For a glimpse of the surreal and fantastic beats to be dropped on this night, check out his new video Folsom  ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Cube

Club About in Sakae from 23:00

Another Friday night of low and deep minimal dance music from one of the most affordable clubs in town  DOOR ¥1500

Saturday 12th

The Metro Party

Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00

Now this is what this month has been missing so far: house music!  And while DJ e-M might splash in the occasional top 40 track, the riotously wild METRO scene is still the best party this and every second Saturday of the month.  DOOR ¥2500 (2D)

SMASH

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

This progressive house party is back with main room action from DJs OGAWA and Babur with support from Nick Edges, Tom Langford and more.  ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

The Travellers

DOXY in Sakae from 19:00

I like how this inconspicuous live house’s lineup of jazz and blues artists has become a much more affordable alternative to the Blue Note.  DOOR ¥4000

I LOVE – WE LOVE 80s MUSIC

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00

Another amazing live performance from ZENGO KANKEI with vocals by Matthew Bowden along with DJ Nick Shotter (AKA Sound Machine AKA Nick Sharp) as well as DJ Kaol.  DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Monday 14th

Bittersweet Release Tour

Apollo Theater in Shinsakae from 13:30

A night of saccharine-infused J-punk with Skull Candy and Uplift Spice.  DOOR ¥2500

Tuesday 15th

The Kinsella Family Japan Tour

Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:00

Tim Kinsella of Joan of Arc fame joins his cousin Nate on this tour.  His normally discordant math rock actually lends itself rather well to an acoustic set.  DOOR ¥4000

ZS Japan tour 2013

K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 19:00

This New York noise band is the answer to the question, “Can you start a band without the mess of actually learning how to play?”  All of the hipster kids are going to pretend to love it!  DOOR ¥3000

Wednesday 16th

MONICA URANGLASS

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 18:30

Erring on the side of predictability, this trio’s new single O/M/G is just more of the syrupy electropop I’ve come to expect from them and the rest of their Tokyo ilk.  They could learn a lot from opening band White White Sisters, a Nagoya outfit whose blend of meaty rock riffs and deafening drums is a shot of adrenaline into the heart of this dying scene.  DOOR ¥2500

BLOW UP vol.1

Club Quattro in Shinsakae from 18:00

Say what you will about their price gouging (which I have before and will again), but Quattro brings the talent.  This month they’re working extra hard to get your yen, starting with rising stars of the indie circuit The Vaccines.  DOOR ¥5800
