The Obvious Circus Events (Until 11/25)

HAPPY KINRO KANSHA NO HI

As an American living in Japan, there are many comforts I have long since given up on. Along with smoke-free bars, wearing my shoes wherever I damn well please and using public transportation without feeling the eyes of everyone on me, I’ve long since given up on the idea of a real American Thanksgiving experience. And while several local restaurants like Shooters and Sienna provide delicious Thanksgiving courses, it just ain’t the same. So, next week instead of eating too much dressing (that’s stuffing to y’all not from the south), fighting with my relatives and passing out on the couch in the middle of a slice of pumpkin pie, I will instead try to find comfort in the many fun events happening this 3-day weekend. So, Happy Labor Thanksgiving Day, Nagoya!

On to the calendar!

Friday 20

Iskwé
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00
Singer-songwriter Iskwé (pronounced iss-kway) draws upon her Cree/Dene (First Nations) and Irish roots to produce a sound filled with booming bass lines and heavy beats, defining her distinctive offering of Alternative RnB/TripHop. Old Skool Hip Hop Night 9
Link’s Bar in Sakae from 20:00
The only thing better than a night of the best beats from days long gone, is a night with DJ scrying at the helm of this way-back machine. Come on and do the Humpty Dance with him and DJs SoulKitchen and Fred. FREE

SMASH
Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Gypsy which?
GC Live in Shinsakae from 20:00
Unfortunately, I have yet to catch Gypsy which?, the newest project from local musician Tom Baurele. But if his past work with the popular Bone Machine is any indicator, this will be a night for some great rock and roll in Nagoya’s most up and coming venue, Gotham City. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

MY BLOCK
Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00
California musician and producer Dâm-Funk’s new album Invite The Light is a love letter to the synth-funk of the 80s. His exhaustive knowledge and collection of rare tracks is unmistakable in every one of his sets. Highly recommended. DOOR ¥4000

INTERACTION
Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00
A night of D&B and UK garage from SMOKER, AGO ¥, MOFONIX and more. If you want to feel the bass, you have to go to Domina. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

Sunday 22

Nagoya Swings Live
Shooters in Fushimi from 20:00
From Seoul to Beijing, Ballroom style is alive and kickin’ in Asia and it’s no different here where groups like Lindy Hop in Aichi and Nagoya Swings keep jazz dance fun and accessible. Their regular concert series continues this month with the 50s-rock style of Osaka’s the Blue Moon Boys. The ticket includes a ¥1000 voucher good for food and drink. DOOR ¥1500

Café Mustache
8 Ball Tatoo Social Club in Kita Nagoya from 12:00

honey dip
Club About in Sakae from 23:00
This regular erotic festival is always a wild one, with a live bondage show, body painting and erotic dancing. Advance tickets are ¥2500 (or ¥3000 at the door). But if you come in fetish dress you’ll get in for free; with one stipulation: mild attire need not apply. So, that ball gag just ain’t going to cut it. Time to break out your latex zentai.

Monday Night Jam
Gotham City Live in Shinsakae from 18:00

In The Darkness We Still Bleed
Red Dragon in Shinsakae from 18:00
The event fliers from this heavy metal live house read like the diary of a madman, all sinister words scrawled in a hodgepodge of evil fonts. I fear reading them out loud will awaken the elder gods, who no doubt will enjoy the music of Insidious Process from Sweden. DOOR ¥2000

Tuesday 24

White Mystery
Club Rock n’ Roll in Shinsakae from 18:30
White Mystery is brother-sister rock’n’roll duo Miss Alex White and Francis Scott Key White from Chicago. While there are many obvious (and possibly intentional) parallels with the White Stripes, they never abandoned the frenetic, distortion-heavy garage rock to get all artsy. DOOR ¥2000

Wednesday 25

MOVITS!
Club Rock n’ Roll in Shinsakae from 18:30
A most original approach to rap, Movits! is the preeminent electroswing hip-hop trio. DOOR ¥4000
