THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM
Do you know that part in, like, every horror movie when one character turns to the other and says “It’s quiet out there”? To which the ONLY reply is “Perhaps too quiet.” All of which happens 5 minutes before they are both eaten by the monster. Well, that first person is you, the other is me and the monster is the hell-storm of dancing, drinking and sexy-costume wearing that is Halloween; which is, sadly, still one week away. Until then, I got a whole bunch of quiet for you this weekend, with a few nuggets of awesome.
On to the calendar!
Friday, October 21
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00
I almost missed this one. Thanks for passing on the flier, Daniel S! DJs Ricky and Kaz will be filling their sets with the grooviest of music from the 60s, including psychedlia, freakbeat and northern soul. But call it whatever you want. As long as they play the 13th Floor Elevators, we’re alllllll good.
Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00
Saturday, October 22
Club About in Sakae from 21:00
Hot on their heels of their set at last weekend’s awesome Rocktoberfest, DJs Babur and Edges will be guesting at this underground sounds party with a special live performance from Alexander Sonoir. This one if for fans of the tech-iest of house and the deep-iest of Techno. DOOR 2000
Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00
I’m a huge fan of Tokyo’s DJ EMMA’s rocking house mixes, and am always happy when he headlines this regular dance party. To be honest, his sets are some of the best you’re likely to hear at Mago after DJ OGAWA, that is. Luckily, on this night, you’ll get both of them inciting the crowd to dance. ADV 3000 / DOOR 3500 (1 FREE Redbull)
Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00
Tokyo DJ Stereociti just released a CD of deep house that is certain to cure what ails you; as long as it’s sleep depravation. I hope the supporting DJs have some caffeine in their sets, because the dance floor is going to need it. ADV ¥2000 | DOOR ¥2500
Kariya Culture Center from 16:30
In the 80s, these guys were big-haired rock gods, packing 10,000 screaming fans in stadiums across the globe. Now, they’re playing community centers to a house of 1,000 at 16:30 in the afternoon. That’s just too sad to poke fun. DOOR ¥8500
Sunday, October 23
The Elephant’s Nest in Fushimi from 20:00
The Pub Quiz is the beyond-logic mixing of one’s ability to remember trivia with a substance known for deterring that ability, and a tradition the world over. Nagoya’s been quiz-less for a while now, which is why I was very excited to hear that the Nest would be hosting this 9 rounder of brain-frying questions. Anyone can join and play with a team, or by their lonesome. Prizes will be awarded to the best 3 teams, as well as a booby prize for the worst. ¥800 per person, with any profits being donated to charity. Everybody wins… except for those who don’t.
Mondo Lounge in Kamimaezu from 16:00 – 18:30
Come and join this local writers group for an afternoon of fiction and poetry readings! As an added bonus, since it’s being held at Mondo Lounge, you can also take some affordable reading material home with you. They have an excellent selection of pre-loved books, CDs and DVDs.
Tuesday, October 25th
Blue Note in Sakae at 17:30 and 20:30
Hailing from Georgia, Kaki King will amaze you with her “finger-style” fanning and frenetic fret tapping… which does sound a bit dirty. DOOR ¥5800
Wednesday, October 26th
Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00
Domina’s giving you the chance to get your haunting on early at this Hallowiener (I assume that’s a typo) party featuring DJs Kunny, KANBE and Takeshi Furuse. DOOR ¥1000 which includes 1 free… wiener. Hmmm, guess it wasn’t a typo.
