It’s become a cliché to say that Christmas seems to start earlier every year, but I think it’s time we addressed the encroachment of another holiday. Like some slow, lumbering monster from a horror movie, it seems that Halloween is getting closer and closer every time we turn around. It’s gotten so out of control that the parties are starting on October 1 and continuing until the beginning of November. Now, I love this holiday, but if we’re not careful we’re going to have a season-long riotous party full of binge-drinking, crazy pranks, general merriment and people running around scantily-clad in sexy costumes… wait, what was the problem?
On to the calendar!
Hall and Oates
Aichi Arts Center in Sakae from 19:00
Easily the scariest thing happening this month! Beware the man eater, my son. DOOR ¥10,000
Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 18:00
This might cost me what little street cred I have, but I am crushing on the Japanese pop-punk scene right now. Bands like MONOEYES really capture the energy and sound that made me buy Blink 182 and ALLiSTER CDs (yeah, I’m old). It don’t hurt that Scott Murphy of ALLiSTER is their current bass player. DOOR ¥2600
X-Hall in Osu from 21:00
The first time I stepped into the space that would become X-Hall, it was nothing more than 4 walls, an open floor plan and a hastily put together DJ booth. Now, only 5 years later, and they’ve already become a titan of the nightclub scene and first choice for several touring musicians. To celebrate this month, they’re having a two day party with DJs NANO from Madrid and KSUKE tonight, and superstar DJ Ken Ishii on Saturday. ADV ¥2900 / DOOR ¥3400
Super Karaoke Mask Party!
GC Live in Shinsakae from 19:00
The Gotham City house band, GC Live Zombies, has an extensive catalog of songs from which you can choose your favorite and then join them on stage to sing the lead. And since this is a Halloween party, you can wear a mask to help with your fear of public performance. Check them out on Facebook if you have any special requests. DOOR ¥2000
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00
Chill out with live music from local musicians NegoSoul and L.Y.S. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)
The Underworld Guildhouse Havenhollow will host the first ever all-English LARP campaign in Japan. A 2-day event for veterans and newbies alike, they’ll start with a clinic to get everyone accustomed to the storyline and gameplay. Attendance on both days is optional, and tents are available if you want to really get into your character. For more details, email firstname.lastname@example.org or join Underworld LARP Japan on Facebook. ¥2000
Nagoya Swings Live – Halloween Edition
Shooters in Fushimi from 18:00
No one does Halloween like the Nagoya Swings ballroom dance group. Returning to Shooters in Fushimi for the 7th year, their “It’s A-Live” dance party is your chance to get away from the wasteland of EDM to an oasis of swinging jazz, jumping rock and old, old school style dancing. This year they’re playing host to legendary local band Duck and the Billys, whose raucous rockabilly is only seconded by lead singers Harry and Yu’s wild drinking and fashion respectively. Nagoya’s own DJ dij will also be along laying down some swinging tunes for people to dance the night away. No worries if you never tried swing dance before! There will be a lesson provided at the start. Guests are welcome to don their most frightfully sexy or sexily frightful costumes if they wish! Admission is only a ¥300 music charge.
Monday Night Jam
Gotham City Live in Shinsakae from 18:00
This and every Monday, GC Live offers all the chance to take the stage and join a supergroup of local talent for the best jam session in town. DOOR ¥1000
K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 18:30
Like a French version of Ben Folds, but half as awesome and twice as weird. DOOR ¥3000
Monster Halloween Quiz Night
Red Rock in Sakae from 20:00
You can expect several rounds of challenging questions with a Halloween theme, including “Name That Horror Movie”. Wear a costume and you’ll get a discount.
Nagoya Shimin Kaikan in Kanayama from 18:30
The ghost of the 80s continues to haunt Nagoya this month with the big hair sound of Whitesnake. And you can hear all the classics: Here I Go Again, Is This Love and… that’s it!? Man, that’s a lot of bones for two songs. Not even Tawny Kitaen (ask your dad) displayed on the hood of a Jaguar would make that worth it. DOOR ¥9800
