The Obvious Circus Events (Until 10/2)

WOO-HOO! Summer… is… outta here! Thank you, Typhoon #whatever, for pushing that lingering humidity out of town and replacing it with just the nicest weather; and not a moment too soon. With Halloween just around the corner, things needed to cool down greatly. It just isn’t a proper All Hallows Eve without that chill in the air. I can finally start thinking about my costume.

What are you going to be?

On To The Calendar

Friday 27

Cafe Domina in Sakae from 22:00

A plethora of dance sounds with DJs Noda, AGO, Chris Ollier, Halcyon  and Zig-Nine with Free Takoyaki… no, that’s not a DJ name. They’re actually giving away free takoyaki to eat at this event. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

This party features the glamorously androgynous DJ Yoji from Kobe, whose hard trance sets will set a fire under your ass. Dance or burn! ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500 (1D)

Saturday 28

Good Weather

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

The lineup of international superstars this party manages to pull in is nothing short of impressive. This time they’ve got UK dubstep/grime producer Swindle from this UK dropping some sick warble. DOOR ¥3500

Old School V

Link’s Bar in Sakae from 21:00

DJ scrying controls the turntables like Dr. Who at the helm of the TARDIS. There’s a lot of shaking  and an explosion or two, but once he’s done, you’ll swear you’ve travelled back in time. For his newest outing, he’s bringing out the dead; a collection of hip-hop legends who have shrugged off this mortal coil. So, it’s less like Dr. Who, and a bit more Bill  and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Chant Down Babylon

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 21:00

Looking for something to do off the beaten track? Give this oft-overlooked but always fun ska  and reggae party a shot. ADV ¥2000 (2D) / DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Sunday 29

Harmonium Parlour

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 19:00

Semi-On’s open mic and art space is back again, as always on the last Sunday of the month, with a number of 10-15 minutes time slots in which any performance artist, be they musician or interpretive dancer, is welcome to take the stage. There will also be an amazing 2nd floor art exhibit featuring the photography of Daniel Cheah. If you’re looking to showcase your talent, drop them a line at DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Monday 30

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:30

The most original approach to rap since Matisyahu picked up a mic and started dropping kosher rhymes, Movits! is the preeminent electroswing hip-hop trio. And being from Sweden makes it even more impressive; that’s like being super-Caucasian. DOOR ¥3400

Metal Mate

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

Heavy metal Mondays at Domina needs to become a weekly thing! DOOR ¥1000

Ice Grill$ Tour 2013

Club Zion in Kamimaezu from 18:00

Dammit! I nearly made it a whole month without subjecting my readers to a band that equates talent with rage. In Her Own Words’ guttural lyrics helps them to avoid the comfortable oblivion of being just another punk-pop band, a hole that co-headliners Stickup Kid is more than happy to fill. DOOR ¥3500

Tuesday 1

Nagoya Swings Intermediate Workshop

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:00

Nagoya Swings is offering a middle of the week chance for everyone interested in learning some new steps. This is a “Build On Your Basics” workshop, so an introductory knowledge of swing dance is preferred. They’re offering 2 bi-lingual lessons for only ¥600. Singles  and couples are all welcome.

Wednesday 2

Scorpion Death Rock

Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00

Once you’ve learned your fancy new dance moves from Nagoya Swings, you can show them off at JB’s the first Wednesday of every month. DJs MOTOKI, RYO, YO-HEY, NAO take everything that was great about the 1950s, the music  and the fashion, and leave out the bad, like the Cold War  and racism. DOOR ¥1500
