The Obvious Circus Events Calendar – Until December 11th

WITH A VENGEANCE

As 2011 winds down, some find the best way to spend the holidays is with friends and family, in a quiet reflection of all that the year brought.  Rambunctious Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties aside, it can be argued that, when compared to the other seasons, winter is a milder, more relaxing time.  Unfortunately, Nagoya doesn’t subscribe to that philosophy, as is evidenced by this weekend’s cluster-$%$# of merrymaking and jollity.  All of which amounts to pain in my joints, fatigued eyes and a ringing of “type faster, monkey boy!” in my ears.  Happy Holidays, indeed.

On to the calendar!

Thursday, December 8

Larry McCray

Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:30

Mr. McCray’s bluesy cover of All Along The Watchtower is some much needed aural therapy for this tired journalist.  This show is highly recommended!  DOOR ¥4500

Aerosmith

Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium in Shiyakusho from 19:00

I mention this event purely out of embarrassment that I only discovered it a few days ago.  Man, first Eric Clapton slips under my radar, now this.  Some may say I’m slipping, but I stand by my reasoning that I can’t be bothered with musicians that should’ve retired years ago.

758 Thursday Live

Plus Park in Sakae from 21:00

By all accounts on the Facebook, this open mic’s inaugural party was a success.  Host Vinny Vintage will be back this and every week with a select group of musicians, including Jerry-I, MDG and more.  WOMEN FREE / MEN ¥1000

Friday, December 9

BURLESQUE DISCOTECA

X-Hall in Osu Kanon from 23:00

Having helped put X-Hall on the scene in 2011, Project Stroke is stepping it up this month with special Guest DJ Andy S. and more with some burlesque and pole dance shows.  Expect to hear a lot from DJ Take and crew in the coming year.  DOOR ¥2000

Margaret Dygas

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00
This talented DJ has lived and played all over the world, and she incorporates that international experience into every original, floor-thumping mix she drops. With DJ NOBU and more  DOOR ¥3000

FUXX THE HYPE

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

Lady Citizen from Kyoto is bringing a high-energy techno mix to About, a cool underground club just down from the Red Rock.  DOOR ¥2500

MAKOTO and M-Swift DOUBLE RELEASE PARTY

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

I know nothing about either of these producers, but I know this is a night fans of Drum and Bass or Dubstep will love.  ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

Saturday, December 10

Axiom 1st Birthday

Bambi in Hisaya-odori from 20:00

When this Axiom Magazine premiered their small yet impressive ‘zine packed with tech news and video game reviews, I warned you all to “get on the bandwagon now so as to not look like a poser down the road.”  Well my friends, “down the road” has come, and in that time Axiom has evolved first into a much-perused website and now to a full-fledged printed magazine.  To celebrate, they’re throwing a free party with DJs scrying, dij, Thomas_Lang, Halcyon and Ryan Barnes and everyone, even posers, are welcome. FREE!!!

Brian Cullen and Friends

Country Joe in Shinsakae from 21:00

Brian’s Irish folk music is the perfect fit for the comfortable atmosphere of this charming pub that has been a part of the Nagoya music scene almost as long as Brian.  DOOR ¥500

Flashback to the 80s

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00 | ¥1500)

Earlier this year, Dean Gascoigne wowed the Plastic Factory crowd with his spot-on renditions from Kraftwerk’s catalogue.  This time he’s giving the same treatment to such 80s superstars as Human League, Soft Cell, Duran Duran and more.  DOOR ¥1500

Black and White Party

Da! Bar in Sakae from 20:00

DJ PauloAtNight is bringing his party-making mix to Nagoya’s hottest shot bar.  I have no idea how this crazy combo will go off, but I definitely want to be there when it does.  WOMEN ¥1500 / MEN ¥2000 (2D), plus 1 Drink FREE to ALL who come with Black and White Clothes

Nagoya Friends Christmas Party

Red Rock in Sakae from 18:00

The party-providers of Nagoya Friends are back with this Holiday-themed get together at everyone’s favorite Australian-themed eatery.  On this night, you can eat and drink all you want for 3000 yen, plus play exciting games with over 20,000 yen in prizes to be won!  These parties are always a great start to you evening.  Reserve your spot now.

Sunday, December 11

AFTERSHOCK Launch Party

Mondo Lounge in Kamimaezu

The Tohoku triple disaster and the subsequent clean-up and rescue effort affected so many people around the world, and it will continue to resonate with us for some time to come.  Recently, a group of writers and artists took it upon themselves to create comics based on their separate experiences.  The collection of their works is called Aftershock, and Mondo Lounge is hosting the official release party this Sunday.  In attendance for this day will include several of the artists behind the project, and they will discuss the book and their careers making comics in Japan.  All proceeds from this event and book sales will be donated to Architecture for Humanity for their rebuilding efforts in Tohoku.  Of all that is happening this weekend, I can think of nothing more deserving of your time and money.

A Swingin’ Christmas 2011

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:00

It’s been an amazing year for Nagoya Swings, Aichi’s only international swing dance group, has got one last floor-shaking shindig on the calendar, and you do not want to miss it.  Featuring a live performance from the ichiban rockabilly band in Aichi, Duck and the Billys and DJ dij spinning the best in swing jazz, rock and everything that’ll get you to dance, the floor will fill up fast, so get there early.  DOOR ¥3000 (includes all you can eat and drink for 3 hours) with free intro to swing dance lessons from 18:00.

the pillows

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 18:00

Any long time reader knows what a huge nerd-on I have for this indie rock band from Hokkaido.  However, I am disturbed to admit that I haven’t heard much from Horn Again, their latest CD; a negligent oversight I hope to overlook when I catch the tour this month.  DOOR ¥4200

LAX2JAPAN Tour

Radix in Tsurumai from 18:00

My attendance of the pillows’ concert should in no way negatively reflect on this event going on at the same time with special guest Nipsey Hussle (WEST SIDE!) and DJ Sour Milk.  Far be it from me to start a beef with someone who sings “Bullets Ain’t Got No Name”.  DOOR ¥6000
