The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 9/23)

If you’ve noticed a slight decrease in underwear sweat recently, it can only mean that relief from the heat is headed our way! I love fall, and not just because it means goodbye to swamp balls for another year. No, I love everything about Japanese autumn, from the beautiful changing of the leaves to the hearty selection of seasonal beers and chu-hi. It also means that Halloween cannot be too far behind, and you need to start planning. What are you going to wear? Where are you going to go? How can you avoid waking up in a pool of your own sick for the 4th year running? Well, I’ve got you covered (you’re on your own with the vomit), and I’ll be bringing you weekly updates about all the best parties this glorious season has to offer. So, keep reading the EC!

Longtime readers know that I have been a fan of Ghost of Matsubara frontman Tom Fallon since first hearing his deceptively catchy songs of pain and regret. He’s the Johnny Cash of Nagoya (I said it! Refute me, I dare ya!) So, no one is more excited than I that they will be releasing their new CD From The Ashes Not Yet Cold next month, just in time for Halloween. Following the local party on October 14, they will be hitting the road for their first ever Japan tour. Lots of chances to catch this awesome. Don’t miss out.

On to the calendar!

Friday 21st

Tha Blue Herb TOTAL Release Tour

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

I’m not much for J-hop on its best day, but this TBH drops mad rhymes to head-nodding beats. Oddly awesome duo OBRIGARRD and many others will be there as well. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

HOLISTIC room vol. 2

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

WAREHOUSE702 is the off-the-beaten-track destination for parties beyond the norm of Tokyo, and you don’t get much more beyond then Freerange Tokyo, a popular deep house party. Domina is lucky to have WAREHOUSE resident DJ MOCA this month. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Club Mago in Shinsake from 22:00

This Italian producer makes ambient techno, which is a nice word for music best heard via a sleep machine. Pleasant dreams. DOOR ¥3000

Saturday 22nd

The Equinox Party

Club Upset in Ikeshita from midnight

Since garnering a good deal of fans all over Japan, BLANKA has been quite busy playing in other towns. But they are finally bringing their dance-inducing electronic jam back to Nagoya for a whole new generation to enjoy. Opening act FU-MU will leave you wondering how so much sound can come from only two guys. DOOR ¥2500

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Zepp Nagoya near Nagoya Station from 18:30

70s Glam meets transgender issues in this rock musical turned film turned Japanese live show. And as much as “The Origin of Love” has been ruined for me by so much late-nite karaoke, there are so many more amazing numbers that I can only imagine will be further destroyed in translation. 2 shows on Sunday as well. DOOR ¥7,800

Irinaka’s Burning

Goya Moon 58 in Iranaka from 18:00

The Tomo Shaga Tribute Band, hot off an amazing performance at last weekend’s Aichi Vision, will be heading out to the far end of town this Saturday. Don’t let the distance detract you from this concert. With their full sound and rich Polynesian menu, Goya Moon is a rare treat even by Nagoya’s eclectic standards. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2300

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00

Another amazing live performance from ZENGO KANKEI (a guy whose knowledge of New Wave music puts my own to shame) with vocals by Matthew Bowden along with DJ Music Machine. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Matt Star Japan Tour

Club About in Sakae from 21:00

As a producer often labeled as “minimal”, Mr. Star’s sound is anything but. It is so full of contagious tempo and quirky samples that you will easily lose yourself in the mix. DOOR ¥2500

House Revenge

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

I’m a huge fan of Tokyo’s DJ EMMA’s rocking house mixes, and am always happy when he headlines this regular dance party. To be honest, his sets are some of the best you’re likely to hear at Mago, after DJ OGAWA that is. Luckily, on this night, you’ll get both big name DJs for the price of one. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500 (1D)

Sunday 23rd

Apologies but there’s a bunch of Nada! Zilch! Zip! happening this Sunday. So, go outside and get some fresh air.
