The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 9/18)

With the sheer volume of party planners and event coordinators in our community, it pays to be either original or risqué. consistently manages to be both with a new theme party every season. This time around, it’s pirates. And who doesn’t love pirates? Not only is The Sexy Pirate Bus bar tour an excellent chance to wear an eye patch, but you’ll also get your drink on at 6 locations around town. Not to mention the countless pirate-themed pickup lines you can try out: booty, wench, cabin-boy, shiver me timbers… they basically write themselves.

Friday 13

The Sexy Pirate Bus

6 Locations around town from 19:00

Crawling is for suckers. This is Aichi! If we want to go to more than one place, we ride! people have a lot going on this night, and they are going to get you there in style: on the Booty Bus, arrrrr! Check out the article for all the details, and make sure you disembark at Coat of Arms where I’ll be manning the turntables all night long. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

Less Than Jake

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

I’ve heard it said that ska is dead, but someone didn’t tell Less Than Jake and their legions of fans in Nagoya and around the world. DOOR ¥5500

This awesome Tokyo band controls the stage with their electro-infused rock whether playing live or dropping one of their legendary DJ sets. DOOR ¥3000

LeFtO Asia Tour

Cafe Domina in Sakae from 23:00

Thankfully, Domina is just a little down the way from JB’s. Cause you’re going to want to also catch Belgium DJ LeFtO’s mix of 70s-inspired funk and soul. DOOR ¥2000

Saturday 14

Metro Party

Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00

Nagoya’s foremost LGBTQ party is celebrating Back To School this month. I am guessing that means hostess Madame d’Metro will be decked out in full schoolmarm regalia. DOOR ¥2500 (2D)

Cafe Domina in Sakae from 22:00

Nagoya’s best drum’n’bass night is back with DJs tA.hA.rA., ZIG-NINE, DJ Smoker and HALCYON. DOOR ¥2000

Bears And Company

Sonset Strip in Sakae

I’m curious what it actually takes for foreign musicians to get a tour in Japan. Not to take anything away from this excellent indie rock band with their Deathcab-with-an-edge sound, but how does a small label act from Kansas City garner a large enough fan base to warrant a Japan tour?

HOLIC × Physical Function

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

London’s own Mr. G is unique. Sure, his pure house music mixes are damn sweet, but it’s his unconstrained dancing behind the turntables that really sets him apart from all the other stoic-to-be-cool DJs out there these days. DOOR ¥3000

Club Zion in Kamimaezu from 16:00

Another day of great punk and ska bands brought to you by DJ Kazoo and his Record Shop Zoo in Osu. DOOR ¥2300

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00

This talented New Zealander group makes prodigious drum and bass music. DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

DJ OGAWA has some of the most rabid fans I’ve ever seen in Nagoya, short of those creepy guys who listen to AKB. Every month for the past 12 years they’ve come together to listen to his admittedly-inspiring progressive house mixes, as if they were sermons from on the mount. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000 (1D)

Sunday 15

Hawaiian Swing Dance

Shooters in Fushimi from 18:00

This month Nagoya Swings is going to cool things down a bit by holding a casual Japanese jinbe and Hawaiian-themed event! Hawaiian shirts, leis, shorts, swimwear and jinbes are all encouraged and welcomed. DOOR ¥500, introductory to swing dance lesson included.

Bloodshot Bill

DayTrive in Shinsakae from 17:00

Skimmer Japan Tour

DayTrip in Tsurumai from 16:30

I’ve never really understood the “big in Japan” theory in the music industry, but this UK punk band is certainly thankful for the boost in record sales. DOOR ¥2500

No Good Rascals

Taurus in Shinsakae from 16:00

I’m rather disappointed with myself. This talented local band has managed to fly under my radar until now. Thankfully their YouTube channel has plenty of great live shows to catch us up. DOOR ¥1500

80’s Romance

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 16:00

The fourteenth anniversary of this great 80s night… DOOR ¥2000

Wednesday 18

Robert Glasper Experiment

Blue Note in Sakae

To understand why this talented jazz pianist won this year’s Grammy for best RnB Album just listen to the last track of his album Black Radio, then listen to the whole thing. Genius. DOOR ¥7800

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 18:00

In a world where One Direction, Justin Bieber and their ilk seem to dominate, it’s easy to dismiss any pretty-boy band as equally annoying. Don’t make that mistake with Australia’s Goodbyemotel. DOOR ¥2800

Club Zion in Kamimaezu from 19:00

This Australian duo’s unique surf-rock is not to be missed, which poses a problem for us music lovers. Good goddamn! Too much good music for one night. DOOR ¥3500
