The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 9/11)

Summer holiday provided a much-needed respite.  It ain’t easy keeping my readers’ appointment books fat with live performances and fun parties.  But as much fun as summer was, I am happy to be back with a lot of good things going down in Nag-town (mostly because the boss-man won’t pay me unless I make with the clickty-clack).  So it is with that generous attitude that the EC is here once again to fill your nights with awesome to-do-ness, and your days with hung-over rage towards me.

On To The Calendar

Thursday 5

Children Of Bodom

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 18:00

This is a metal band from Finland that I refuse to waste more than fifteen…

Friday 6

Ghost Of Matsubara

Club 3Star in Imaike from 17:00 | ¥2,500)

As we begin a new term, there’s a good chance many of you may be reading the Events Calendar for the first time ever.  If so, welcome to Nagoya.  Here’s the best rock band our community has ever produced.  You’re welcome!  NOTE: Nagoya takes no pride in opening band Cattle Mutilation.  ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

Apollo Theater in Shinsakae from 19:00

After an extended summer vacation, I am very happy to see a ton of excellent live music coming to Nagoya this month including this London shoegaze band.  Parakeet makes the kind of somber music the disenfranchised youth love.  DOOR ¥3,800

Club JB’s in Sakae fro 22:00
Tokyo DJ Sugiurumn has s new album, May The House Be With You.  But the best thing at this event, for my money, is local on-the-rise producer Andy S., who opens on this night.  ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Saturday 7

Let’s Get Wasted

DayTrim in Shinsakae from 23:00

I’m a big fan of local artist and skateboarder Steve McLellan.  He and his friends put together some of the most innovative art/music events in the area.  And the honesty with which they’ve plugged their newest open bar event is refreshing, to say the least.  There’ll be lots of cool original work and DJs playing at DayTrim, which is a hole-in-the-wall of a venue that you need to know more about.  DOOR ¥2200 (all you can drink!)

Club JB’s in Shinsakae from 22:00

This chill dance party is turning five this month.  Flagship is a party for music lovers who care more about dancing then being a part of a “scene.”  DOOR ¥2500

Dream Japan

X-Hall in Osu from 21:00

This party features a special live performance from Leroy Davis and special guest MC Tony Masa and all of a sudden I realize I have no idea what either of those names means.  Buuut, I do recognize my man Vinny Vintage.  And seeing his name on a lineup is usually reason enough.  DOOR ¥2500

Jumbomax DX

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Guest DJ Takkyu Ishino will once again bring his funky techno mix to this party that celebrates repetitive electronic music that hasn’t changed much since the 90s.

Wednesday 11

Trixie Whitley

Club Quattro in Sakae from 19:00

As the daughter of the late, great blues musician Chris Whitley, there’s no arguing Trixie Whitley’s musical pedigree.  But even a cursory listen to her debut album Fourth Corner reveals a level of passion that is all her own.  DOOR ¥5500

Pitbull Global Warming Tour

Zepp Nagoya from 18:00

I know “sampling” from other songs have long been a staple of the hip hop industry, but “Mr. Worldwide” takes his larceny to a whole other level.  This guy would dig up Biggie if he thought he’d been buried with a hit-making beat.  DOOR ¥9000

September 15 Hawaiian Swing Dance @ Shooters
October 26 The Sexy Halloween @ Club Mago
November 6~11 Foreign Artist Exhibition 2013 @ The International Center

*submissions accepted from now until November 25*
