The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 9/11)

My summer was fairly uneventful, so I am raring to get back into the Nagoya nightlife. Shame that, like is the case so often, the first weekend of the month is kinda lame. Don’t worry, folks. There’s a lot of good coming up in September, and you can read all about it in this month’s NAG MAG.

On To The Calendar

Friday, September 5

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 23:00

Charles Cohen and Morphosis are masters of the Buchla synthesizer, which look like an old-timey switchboard. I love their sound, which can best be described as a threesome between a Dalek, a fax machine and Sputnik. If you see someone dancing during their set, they are high. DOOR ¥3000

Saturday 6

Brian Cullen & Friends

Coat of Arms in Fushimi from 19:30

The second floor of CoA has become the new home for songwriters in Aichi, and I want to thank Dr. Cullen for giving the scene a new direction. Stop by for the amazing music from this Irish son and many others, and stay for the exceptional dishes on the menu. DOOR ¥500

Club JB’s in Shinsakae from 22:00

Flagship is a party for music lovers who care more about dancing then being a part of a “scene.” Featuring some of the best house DJs in town. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

X-Hall in Osu from 21:00

French producer Maelstrom straddles the line between where dance music came from and where it is going. It’s strange and, at the same time, familiar. ADV ¥2900 / DOOR ¥3400

Sunday 7

Nagoya Swings Intermediate Workshop

Shooters in Fushimi from 18:30

Nagoya Swings “Build On Your Basics” Workshop happens the first Sunday of every month. This is a great chance to get more involved with the swing dance scene that is surprisingly vibrant in Nagoya. On this night you can get a bi-lingual dance lesson for only ¥600. Singles & couples, all are welcome.

Monday 8

Huck Finn in Imaike from 18:30

Tokyo duo Sister Paul is back with more glum glam rock: a unique sound they achieve by co-

opting the fashion of Iggy Pop and a sound inspired by his heroin addiction. DOOR ¥1800

Thursday 11

Rise Records Japan Tour

Club Quattro in Sakae from 17:00

Some friendly advice to the rap/metal-core bands Issues and Alive Like Me. Co-opting the sounds of better music genres does not lend credence to your shallow rage & talent. Stop polishing that turd. DOOR ¥5000

Buss A Blank

Radix in Tsurumai from 20:00

The son of rocksteady legend Alton Ellis, Christopher Ellis continues in his father’s stead with his soulful voice and smooth songs of love. This is the perfect show for a date, just don’t expect her, or him, to be thinking of you. ¥2500
