The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 8/7)

As I sit here writing this, I am less than 5 hours from the start of my summer holiday, and less than 4 days from Natural Rhythm at Club JB’s this Saturday. Like a kid on Christmas Eve, I am too stoked to focus, so I hope you will pardon my brevity.

On To The Calendar

Friday 2

Duck and the Billys

bar DEON in Kanayama from 21:30

Featuring Yu, the cutest guitar slinger this side of the Pacific, and her wild beau Harry, Duck and the Billys has introduced a whole new generation to 50s rock. This party is going to be swing-tastic! DOOR ¥1500

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

American DJ/producer DVS1, or the devious one, is notorious for his bass-heavy tracks which will take the Mago crowd to dark depths. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000 (1D)

Sweet Life

X-Hall in Osu from 22:00

The popular Jamaican singer Cocoa Tea and local duo Ackee and Satltfish together for a nice mix of roots and Japan’s own entertaining yet bewildering approach to Reggae ADV ¥3700 / DOOR 4500

Saturday 3

Natural Rhythm

Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00

What well surely go down as the most epic party of the summer! Along with the Natural Rhythm crew, with producer Andy S. at the helm, there will be live performances from Solskye (cannot remember the last time they performed under this name!), Nagoya RnB superstar Chris Jay and super-group W.A.T.P. This is also the Video Release Party for Vinny Vintage’s new single Dance With Me. I could go one about the live art, the dancers, the food and the smoke-free chillout space, but I think you get the point: don’t miss this party! If you haven’t already RSVP’d, you can do so as easily as clicking “Going” on the Facebook page. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000 (1D)

Rock n Roll Live

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 19:30

If you’re hankering for some rock music, Imaike is your target destination this weekend. At the P’Factory you can again catch the hardest working rockabilly band in Nagoya, Duck and the Billys, along with almost-as-awesome Jim and The Hickeys. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Motofest 2013

Huck Finn in Imaike from 17:00

If you prefer your rock more on the screamy side, then jump in the mosh pit with bands Love Is Dead from Osaka, The Dead Pan Speakers from Tokyo and several more local hardcore and metal bands.

Sunday 4

Monster Vibes 3 Kings Tour

Centrair Airport from 11:00 AM

This outdoor bash features giants of hip hop Akon, Nas and Layzie Bone as well as rising star AK-69, from right here in Aichi. As Centrair hasn’t ever played host to such an event, someone more cynical than I might point out that the headliners couldn’t be bothered to travel further than 15 feet from their G6s. However, let’s look at this not as a slap in the face, but as chance to hear some jet-engine-blasted beats. Also on the lineup, Vinny Vintage will be dropping bombs all over that airport stage… perhaps not the best choice of words. There is a ton more rappers and singers set to play on the 2 stages, and for a break, you can check out the pimped rides at the adjoining car show. ADV ¥9000 / VIP ¥15000

Gregorio vol.1

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 17:00
If you missed out on Fuji Rock, these DJs are doing a full review, including music from NIN, Bjork, The Cure, Vampire Weekend and more. It’s enough to make you regret not going all over again. DOOR ¥1800

Very Be Careful

DayTrive in Shinsakae from 17:00

Your second chance this year to catch this LA band’s accordion-driven Latin sound; along with peculiarly awesome DJ duo OBRIGARRD and local reggae band Pressure Drops. DOOR ¥3800

Tuesday 6

Nagoya Swings Intermediate Workshop

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:00

Nagoya Swings is offering a middle of the week chance for everyone interested in learning some new steps. This is a “Build On Your Basics” workshop, so an introductory knowledge of swing dance is preferred. They’re offering 2 bi-lingual lessons for only ¥600. Singles and couples are all welcome.

Wednesday 7

Cheap Trick

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 18:00

The fact that Cheap Trick is often referred to as the “American Beatles” in Japan is either proof of a negligent misunderstanding of who the Beatles are, or a ploy by the best publicist ever. Either way, it ain’t true, but that doesn’t make “I Want You To Want Me” any less fun or “The Flame” any less cheese-tastic. DOOR ¥7000
