The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 7/4)

HALF and HALF

Apologies for the deficiency in fun things happening this weekend. This sort of thing tends to happen with months that have 4 and a half weekends. You’d think with all of the bands, DJs and party planners our community has that someone would see this coming and throw a bitchin’ brouhaha to make up for the vacuum in our vacation. Wait… I saw this coming months ago. Why didn’t I plan something?!?!

WHAT’S GOT ME BUZZ’n: Beach Parties

You can always tell summer’s just around the bend when your inbox starts to fill with invitations to countless beach parties. By my calculations we all have less than 3 weeks to get down to swimsuit sizes, which for me is a bit more stressful. As I am playing at the FREE Sound Machine Sessions on Utsumi Beach on July 28with several other talented DJs, I could have over 1000 people staring at me. Luckily, the very attractive DJ Mai will be there as well, so I don’t think I have too much to worry about… except for nearsighted whale hunters.

On to the calendar!

Thursday 28th

Reichelt Japan Tour

K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 19:30

I’ve discovered a lot of great new music this month, but this Australian singer-songwriter is the cake. The fact that the fabulously funky Tomo Shagger Tribute Band is opening? Icing, baby, icing. DOOR ¥2000

Friday 29th

Matthew Plays Elton

Popcorn in Yagoto from 20:00

I couldn’t be happier that the local music community is returning to this cool acoustic venue on the FAR side of town. I’m even more thrilled that Matthew is doing his spot-on covers of Sir Elton there. He’s going to sound even better in that comfy space! Popcorn is down from exit 2 of Yagoto Station. There will be 2 sets at 20:00 and 21:00. DOOR ¥500

minGle

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

british DJ Paul Murphy (aka MUDD) and Max Essa guest star at this house and disco party with a few JB’s regulars also behind the wheels of steel. A funky night awaits. DOOR ¥3000

RICE

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

While the house-heads are away at JB’s, the Technophiles will play at Mago with guest DJ Sammy Dee and DJs SONIC WEAPON and Jaguar P. DOOR ¥3000

Saturday 30th

OK Boy! OK Girl!

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 21:00

There’s something for everyone at this multi-genre DJ event. Buddha is a great club for anyone who wants to enjoy unique music without the stifling crowds of the bigger venues. ADV ¥2000 (1D) / DOOR ¥2000

Ground Old Party

Tight Rope in Sakae from 17:00

Live music from Arrow, Lucky St. George and a whole bunch of bands I don’t recognize. However, I am always happy to post Tight Rope events. They are an oasis of rock in the sea of dance music that is the east end of Sakae. DOOR 2000 (1D)

Fuck Rock Festival, vol. 41

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00

And speaking of “oasis of rock”… Those not a fan of Metallica, Green Day, AC/DC, Rancid and the like may not want to attend this regular party for fear of having their faces rocked-off. DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Block Party

X-Hall in Osu from 22:00

4BEAT and block.fm present a night of Japanese club music with Taku Takahashi (of m-flo), DAISHI DANCE, Hisanori H, HiRO, NMZ, IKU and lots more.

Sunday 1st

Creators Market

Port Messe in Nagoya-ko from 11:00

Over 3000 amateur and professional designers will be exhibiting and selling their art and wares all day Saturday and Sunday (I listed in on Sunday alone because the day looked so sad with nothing else going on). A wide range of handmade arts, crafts and fashion items will be available. Since this is Japan, I imagine the strange will be competing with the uber-kawaii for your attention, and yen. ADV 600 / DOOR 800

Wednesday 4th

Jesse Harris

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:30

Norah Jones may have made “Don’t Know Why” famous with her silky voice, but Mr. Harris won the Grammy for writing it. Catch him on this night of many other hits that should-have-been. DOOR ¥5800

Upcoming Events

July 14 and 15 Three Guys One Pub Dinner Theater @ Shooters
July 26 Wanna Be Child @ Club JB’s
July 28 Sound Machine Beach Party @ Utsumi
