While many believe that Nagoya is unbearably hot and humid during the summer, others know that it is and leave town the first chance they get. This August, many of my “fly-jin” brethren are headed for cooler climes on faraway shores. However, I have made the foolish choice to “vacation” in Tennessee where it promises to be hotter and humider. At least I will return at the end of August, and therefore not really miss much of the terrible weather here… Hmmm, I am sensing a flaw in my plans.
WHAT’S GOT ME BUZZ’n: A summer of great events!
While I won’t really miss much of the horrid heat, there is a $%and#-ton of amazing happenings coming up that I won’t be around for… I seriously need to fire my travel agent! Of course there’s the always amazing Summer Sonic and Fuji Rock, both sporting awesome lineups this year. However, locally you’ve got the World Cosplay Summit next weekend, Nagoya Summer Jam (Aug 4), Death Cab for Cutie at Club Quattro (Aug 16), The Beach Boys at Nippon Gaishi (Aug 19) and Hop on the Sexy (Aug 25). All in all, it’s going to be a great summer, and I’ll see you on the other side of it.
On to the calendar!
Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00
Changes are in store for this long-running house party. The lineup has been extended to include a good number of talented DJs including Toida, Mizo, Tom Langford and Andy S. Get an early start to your weekend because work on Friday is highly overrated. DOOR ¥2000
UKFC on the Road 2012
Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 16:00
These days, Diamond Hall’s calendar tends to be deficient in bands anyone would care to see. Though they make up for it a bit this night with J-rock from BIGMAMA, The Novembers, Polysics and the telephones. DOOR ¥3900
Club Ozon in Sakae from 19:00
This house music party featuring popular DJs JUNK and PaulaAtNight kicks off at 19:00 and ends at midnight. I’m not sure exactly who this early-bird special appeals to, but I’m guessing it’s for the oft-ignored octogenarian club kids in Nagoya. MEN ¥2000 / ¥3000 (2D), WOMEN free IF they were a costume… that’s fair, right?
Utsumi Beach from 10:00 AM
Ah, the beach party. The one time every year when I realize that I’ve really let myself go over the winter months. If you’re in the same tubby boat, then we’ve got until the end of the month to shape up for this day-long fiesta featuring DJs PauloAtNight, Mai, Junky, dij, scrying, m@tt, lest we be harpooned by Japanese fishermen. FREE!
Cafe Domina in Sakae from 22:00
If you’re not completely danced out after the beach party, head over to Domina for the Nagoya Bass Coalition’s return with Alexander Sonoir, AGO, MOFONIX, Smoker and Skullduggery. DOOR ¥2000 (1D)
Taurus in Shinsakae from 19:30
The Rats and Shibata Heavy Industries will be rocking out at this underrated live house on the east end. Where a facemask for fear of your face being rocked clean off!
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00
The Factory is showing some love for us children of the 80s (and all the wannabes). Featuring another amazing live performance from ZENGO KANKEI (a guy whose knowledge of New Wave music puts my own to shame) with DJ Kaol. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)
Cavolo in Toyohashi from 20:00
A long way to travel for good music, but when you’ve got the Tomo Shagger Tribute Band (or whatever they’re calling themselves these days), Snack Mama and more all for only ¥1500 (1D) then you don’t question it. You just go!
Alex from Tokyo
Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00
A night of house music for the few people who won’t be at any of the events above. DOOR ¥2500
Shooters in Fushimi from 19:00
After debuting their new band name last weekend (which Mr. Cullen assures me he’s not worried about litigation from the other Shockers band in Nagoya) they’re taking their new and loud sound to a bigger venue this weekend. And to show them how to really rock Shooters out, they’ve brought along veteran performers Bone Zero and their raucous covers of rock classics. Rumor has it that the talented and lovely Aya Kawakami will be putting in some guest vocals on this night as well. ¥300
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 19:00
I have a lot of love and respect for this monthly open mic even though I haven’t made it out for one in a good long while. However, this is clearly a case of “do as I say, not as I do”. Many local acts get their start on this stage, and if you’ve got a talent to showcase, I can think of no better venue. Besides all the great open-mic performances on the main stage, the work of Tinne and Daniel Cheah will be in the upstairs gallery. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)
The Elephant’s Nest in Fushimi from 20:30
The pub quiz returns to Nagoya’s British-est pub (at least in the eyes of a bloke from Tennessee). So put together your crack team of drinkers and knowledge seekers and see if you’ve got the fortitude to answer as many questions as you can about various topics such as movies, sports, music, culture, famous people (with questions in both English and Japanese). ¥500 entry fee with lots of prizes to be won.
Amateras Lounge in Sakae from 21:00
This classy new night spot is finally reaching out to the foreign community, and our ambassador in this endeavor is DJ Nick Edges, who is joined by YU-I for this impressive ladies night special. MEN ¥2,000 / WOMEN ¥1,000
Count Basie Orchestra
Blue Note in Sakae
“The Swingingest Band In All The Land” returns to Nagoya. Though I really wish they’d play a venue better suited to the dancing their BIG band sound encourages. DOOR ¥8700
