The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 7/24)

I’m sorry for the absence of the Events Calendar last week. As many of you know, I was fairly busy with the Nagoya Players dinner theater. It was an amazing weekend. You helped us sale out three of the four performances, which is a personal record. Thank you, Nagoya for your continued support of community theatre. However, now that the show has wrapped up, I’ve been left with a bit of a hole in my life. Sure, it’s nice to have my weekends back, and I am really looking forward to returning to the decks at Wanna Be Child and Sound Session Beach Party next week. But, there is just something about the stage that none of my many other interests can compare to. *sigh*… I guess I’ll just have to wait for The Players Cabaret this December for my next dramaturgical fix.

WHAT’S GOT ME BUZZ’n: Summer Holidays!

But no time for moping, as August is just around the corner and with it a glut of concerts, beach parties, DJ nights, art happenings and a whole lot of great events that I won’t even be here to enjoy! That’s right, faithful reader. Your man on the scene, THE Daniel Ostrander, is going on holiday and will be gone for the entire month of August. But don’t despair, for I would never leave my fans in the lurch. Before I head off, I will have for you with one final summer EC that should more than tide you over until I return. It’s going to be so jam-packed with summer shindigs that you won’t have enough time to regret not going somewhere cooler for the break (i.e. just about anywhere)

On to the calendar!

Friday 20th

Club JB’s in Sakae from 18:00

This Tokyo group’s new CD Turbo Town, is severely lacking the electrified edge of their previous endeavors, replacing it with guitars and pop-infused lyrics. Though I can’t fault them too much for straying from the harder electro sound, especially when it sounds this good. DOOR ¥4000

The Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00

A night of 60s R’n’B, Northern Soul and Jazz with DJs Ricky and Maruko; this party is an alternative to all the other mainstream DJs events this Friday. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 22:00

This event actually advertises that “This is good dance music!!” as opposed to all the clubs out there pushing that weak sauce. However, with local talented DJ Jaguar-P and a special live performance from Orlando, they may actually be writing checks that their butts can indeed cash. ADV ¥1000 / DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Saturday 21st

8th Anniversary Party

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00

For 8 years, the Plastic Factory has provided an excellent and spacious atmosphere for some of the most progressive and underground of parties. From the popular Harmonium Parlour to the numerous art house events and fundraisers, The Factory has been there for the community on numerous occasions. So, come on out this Saturday and help Heinz and all celebrate this momentous occasion. With music provided by several Plastic Factory regulars including DJs Kaol, Nick Sharp, Ten and pole dancers Mia and Mie. DOOR 2000 (includes 2 free drinks)

Brian Cullen and the Shockers

Country Joe in Shinsakae from 19:45

Mr. Cullen’s new project featuring Paul Rowe (bass), Eric Imai (percussion), and Robert Hewer (guitar) finally has a name! However, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that there is already a band in Nagoya named The Shockers. However, Nagai (now of Budo Grape) is a nice guy. I’m sure he’d let y’all use that name for a reasonable fee. Catch Brian Cullen and the Shockers this Saturday before the cease and desist order takes effect.  DOOR ¥500

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

I couldn’t be happier that SMASH finally doesn’t conflict with the Metro party, but this time they conflict with the Plastic Factory’s anniversary. Not even DJ Ogawa’s birthday could pull me away from that event. DOOR ¥3000

Golden Festival

X-Hall in Osu from 23:00

Something a bit different as X-Hall is offering a night of techo and trance topped off with a psy-trance set by special guest Protoculture from South Africa. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥4000

Sunday 22nd

Nagoya Swings July Live Jive

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:30

Nagoya’s only international jazz dance group is starting off the New Year with a great chance for anyone to get involved in this escalating scene. They’re offering 2 bi-lingual introductory lessons and live music from The Hospy, who always play crowd-pleasing covers of the hits of the 60s, 70s and 80s. This is the best way to get introduced to ballroom dance styles such as East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop and the Charleston. Singles and couples are all welcome. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500 (includes all you can eat and drink for 3 hours)

Nag Bash

Club Radix in Tsurumai from 18:00

In a continuing effort to prove they are more than just a club on the wrong side of the tracks, Radix is once again presenting this revolving lineup of local bands. This time they’ve actually booked a band I care about: Duck and the Billys! However, GO+ON, Cappuccino Tragedy and the other bands leave lots to the imagination… as I cannot even imagine how bad they could be. ADV ¥1500 / DOOR ¥2000 (+1 D)

JUNKY Matsuri

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

JB’s coolest night for electro and techno music is celebrating the return of hot weather the only way club kids know how: by staying indoors like a sane person.  ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

Tuesday 24th

Goya Moon in Iranaka from 18:30

I love an African drum circle, and ever since Baionzoku fell off the local scene, my life has been devoid of that infectious rhythm. Which is why I am super psyched that this West African drum and dance circle is playing at the cool Hawaiian themed live house on the other side of town. It’s very close to Iranaka station, and well worth the trip. Check it out! ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Upcoming Events

July 26 Wanna Be Child @ Club JB’s
July 28 Sound Machine Beach Party @ Utsumi
August 4 Nagoya Summer Jam @ Lea Lea Hale
