The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 5/26)

You’ve only got one thing to do this weekend: get yourself to the Chubu Walkathon at Morikoro Park in Nagakute. Celebrating their 25th anniversary, the Walkathon is our community’s biggest charitable event. Every year they raise millions for local charities benefitting the elderly, people who are physically and mentally challenged, research into cures for diseases, orphanages, animals in need and so many other. This year, with your help, they will reach their noble goal of 25 million yen. A family friendly event, there are lots of games, activities and music to enjoy, too. The forecast calls for beautiful weather, so you got no excuse. I’ll see you there!

On to the calendar!

Friday 20

Maverick in Fushimi from 20:00

Built in the heyday of the bubble economy, Maverick is a gilded palace of decadence in decay. It’s the kind of nightclub Trump would’ve built, and then forgotten it existed for 20 years. I was actually surprised to find this place is still hosting DJ parties, as I thought it was primarily used as a wedding venue these days. But still, if you’re at Shooters this Friday and want to dance, but cannot be bothered to go to Sakae; then walk around the corner for a night of 80s and pop music. DOOR ¥2000

Saturday 21

Mods Mayday Nagoya 2016

Lounge Vio in Shinsakae from 20:00

Every year, all the mod and hipsters hop on their scooters and converge on Nagoya for a night of the best soul, R&B, ska and rock of the 60s, as well as live performances from the jazzy BLOODEST SAXOPHONE, The Fave raves and Le Virginie from Tokyo and many more. Special guest DJ MOTOKI will also be there spinning vinyl gold! And don’t miss the scooter run from Oasis 21 at 19:00. ADV 3800 / DOOR 4500

Sunday 22

Chubu Walkathon 2016

Morikoro Koen in Nagakute from 10:00

It’s not all about the raising of money for local charities. The Walkathon also hosts one of the most exciting stage shows of the year. For their 25th, their lineup is packed with so much talent including the return of the best Beatles cover band in Japan, The One After 909, local faves The Hospy’s, KISS cover band WKZ52 with Ray Proper, the southern rock of The Michael Wade Band, Hyappa Blues out of Okazaki and the idol group OSU. A few new fun acts include Public Ninja (yes, they are a Ninja rock band) and pop star Sam of TRF. That is more than enough entertainment to insure the only walking you’ll have to do is from the stage to the food vendors (don’t worry; it ain’t far)

Unofficial Walkathon After Party

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:00

When Nagoya’s biggest charity event leaves you too wired to call it a night, head over to Shooters for some more live music with Santora 5 and Naked Men. DOOR ¥300

Yanagase Ants in Gifu from 18:00

Having just discovered this awesome Tokyo band, I was very upset to learn they started their “Good-bye Tour” last month, and this is as close as they are coming to our city. But Ants is a great live house, and well worth the trip for what could be your last chance to catch the best Celtic punk this side of Dublin. 20 minute walk from Gifu Station.

The Gathering

Emporium in Sakae from 22:00

Parisian DJ Luke Wolf may be new to the Nagoya party scene but his funky house mixes are quickly making him a crowd favorite. This celebration of France is open to all, which is a big step into the 20th century for the Emporium. DOOR ¥1500

Monday 23

Monday Night Jam

GC Live in Shinsakae from 18:00

This and every Monday, GC Live offers all the chance to take the stage and join a supergroup of local talent for the best jam session in town. DOOR ¥1000

I had never heard of future soul music before, but if this Australian band is any indication, the soulful sounds of tomorrow are damn fine. DOOR ¥8800

Tuesday 24

Black Earth

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

Swedish death metal band Arch Enemy has gone through many incarnations but none were as loved as the original. After 15 years, the supergroup is back together and performing only material from the early years for a whole new generation of metalheads to enjoy. DOOR ¥7500

Wednesday 25

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

American power metal band Kamelot is currently touring japan with special guest singer Alissa White-Gluz, who was the lead singer of Arch Enemy before they returned to the original lineup… well, this is awkward. DOOR ¥7500
