The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 4/3

April is nearly here, and for the first in a very long time I am NOT looking forward to it. See, my Birthday is in April, and this particular one is going to be bad. No spoilers, but let’s just say I’m not over it yet, but the hill is feeling too close for comfort (unless it’s Southern). Thankfully, there is a lot of great parties this month that will give me several opportunities to feel young again (READ: make an ass of myself). So, if you see me on the dance floor busting out the Running Man or wearing a flannel shirt tied around my waist, please forgive an older man’s attempt to recapture some youth.

On to the calendar!

Thursday 29th

Fountains Of Wayne

Club Quattro in Sakae from 19:00

8 years after Stacy’s Mom and the MTV-fame it created, Fountains of Wayne is back with new album Sky Full of Holes which is, thankfully, far less irreverent and much more mature than all their past efforts combined. I am actually recommending you go to this show; a sure sign of the apocalypse. DOOR ¥6000

Friday 30th

X-Hall in Osu Kanon from 23:00

All the way from Tokyo, X-Hall is proud to welcome the very talented C.Snatch Z., a burlesque dancer with a hilariously inappropriate stage name. Along with performances from pole dancer MIA and more, this may not be the best event to take your boyfriend. DJs Take and Andy S. will also be there, but I doubt anyone will remember, no matter how awesome their dance-inducing sets are. ADV ¥1500 / DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

OK, admittedly, I’m a bit over electro. But if anybody can breathe life into this quickly aging fad, it’s the TRIP Djs with special guest DJ Sakurai Makoto of Dragon Ash. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Saturday 31st

Nagoya Mixer Party

Shooters in Sakae from 18:00

A very special mixer party this month, as the NMP presents a very special live performance from W Cheese (which I can only hope is pronounced “with cheese”), who is famous for their spot-on covers of Judy and Mary as well as several other J-pop favorites. This party will be a great way to make some new friends, and add some Japanese favorites to your karaoke repertoire. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500, includes all you can eat and drink until 21:00

Animericana vol. 6

Sound Bar P.O.d in Sakae from 22:00

I’m willing to bet that many of you reading this right now are, at least in some small way, an Otaku. Whether that fandom stems from your love of video games, your penchant for big eyes and speed lines or that embarrassingly large collection of AKB48 merchandise you’ve got under your bed; chances are you’ll be able to let out your inner-geek on this day of cartoon soundtracks, video game music and AMVs. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 16:00

Since I moved away from Imaike a few years back, that area has changed so much that I barely recognize it. No where is that more evident than at the PF, where I hardly recognize any of the acts playing there anymore. However, that is more a comment on how I should get back to Imaike more often, and in no way should detract from this night of live performances from Su-Boyo-Nimomitanai, Asaykedoramaclab, Fuzoroinaringo and Sycamore with several DJs. DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Brian Cullen and Friends

Country Joe in Shinsakae from 20:45

Mr. Cullen’s new, yet-to-be-named project featuring Paul Rowe (bass), Eric Imai (percussion), and Robert Hewer (guitar) are performing at this charming pub that has been a part of the Nagoya music scene almost as long as Brian. They’re welcoming suggestions for a band name, and since his last project was Iznit Obvious, he’s certainly not very picky. DOOR ¥500

House Revenge

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

I’m a huge fan of Tokyo’s DJ EMMA’s rocking house mixes, and am always happy when he headlines this regular dance party. To be honest, his sets are some of the best you’re likely to hear at Mago, after DJ OGAWA that is. Luckily, on this night, you’ll get both big name DJs for the price of one. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500 (1D)

Sunday 1st

To Be Free!

Sonset Strip in Shinsakae from 18:00

There’s a whole lot of bad going down at this punk-heavy event. I, however, will focus on the good; of which there is more than enough in the Oldtones, my new favorite ska band. This a great way to kick off your April. DOOR ¥2500

Blue Note in Sakae at 18:30 and 21:15

One of Japan’s most talented producers is bringing his fantastic live show to Nagoya. Expect a good deal of special guests and a full-on orchestra backing his unique jazzy house. DOOR ¥6800

Monday 2nd

Sum 41

Zepp Nagoya from 18:00

Punk Spring is back, and, as always, it’s going to be a 2 day, beer-fueled, mosh-pit-filling hanami with several top acts including this Peter Pan Punk act with New Found Glory. DOOR ¥7000

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 18:00

And just so all you metal heads don’t feel left out, feel free to rage to the thrash metal of Anthrax with special guests, Hell Yeah. DOOR ¥7350

Tuesday 3rd

The Offspring

Zepp Nagoya from 18:00

Day two of Punk Spring features yet another American punk band who staunchly refuse to grow up. DOOR ¥7500

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

Ah, the punk rockers dilemma: Do you go for the a true punk act that has been kicking ass for longer than many of you’ve been alive, or settle for The Offspring. DOOR ¥5500
