The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 4/29)

You may look at the sparse offerings in this week’s newsletter and think to yourself, “Man, that guy’s not even trying.”  Well, faithful reader, you’d be correct!  No disrespect to any of the talented acts out there (if you’re not talented, much disrespect intended), but I’ve kind of got a lot of baggage to deal with this weekend, the short list of which reads like the tourist brochure at men’s hell.  So, you’ll forgive me if I overlook the special edition of your bimonthly dance party with special guest DJ who-gives-a-$#!+.

WHAT’S GOT ME BUZZ’n: Golden Week

And all of the awesome live and DJ events that it comes with.  I will try to get that info to you in a timely manner next week.  Now, forgive me while I get my cheeky on.

On to the calendar!

Friday 27th

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

If his live set at the start of the month was a bit too much for your wallet, well you can also check out Jazztronik’s stripped-down, but still awesome DJ set at JB’s on this night.  DOOR ¥3000

Cafe Domina in Sakae from 22:00

Several of the local rock DJ parties are coming together for an event that is sure to make all in attendance wish they had spent their money on a live band instead.  ADV ¥1500 / DOOR ¥2000

Saturday 28th

The Elevator

The Red Rock in Sakae FINAL WEEKEND

Tickets are almost gone for this locally created drama.  I caught it last weekend and was blown away with how thoroughly they converted the Red Rock into a block box theater.  It was a triumph of Community Theater, and I eagerly await their next project.  Written by Gary Beaubouef & directed by Steve Pottinger, this is the story of 2 foreigners who have just arrived in Japan and, following a disaster, find themselves trapped in an elevator with a local woman.  A tale of the human condition that hits close to home, this show is a must see.  You can check out the fresh trailer on YouTube now, and heat to the Facebook page to RSVP your seats for only ¥1500, which comes with a free drink.

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:30

The Factory is showing some love for us children of the 80s (and all the wannabes).  Featuring another amazing live performance from ZENGO KANKEI (a guy whose knowledge of New Wave music puts my own to shame) with vocals by Matthew Bowden along with DJ Music Machine.  DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Dream Theater

Aichi Arts Center in Sakae from 17:00

The only people I know who appreciate this progressive metal band are musicians, which speaks volumes to their talent & the pretentiousness of their fan base.  DOOR ¥9000

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

When DJs Yamica & Jiroazumi closed the doors on this techno & house party, I breathed a small sigh of relief.  It was a bit of a pain remembering how to type that absurd name.  However, now that it’s back, I’m no longer perturbed because I now know that it is pronounced “oaro”.  No less stupid, but much easier to type.  DOOR ¥3000

Sunday 29th

Harmonium Parlour

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 19:00

While others spend their time just writing about the local scene, Semi-On creates it with their monthly open mic and art space.  Besides all the great performances on the main stage, the upstairs gallery will play host to the work Saddle Kobayashi & Stiv Pek.  And if you’re interested in learning more about how to get involved with the Japanese music scene, make sure you show up an hour early for the Kansai Music Conference Presentation.  DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

World Music Vol. 1

X-Hall in Osu from 22:00

And by “world music”, X-Hall means “Latin”, as evidenced from their lineup; including salsa recording artist Michael Stuart & the reggaeton (is that still a thing?) of Cheka.  DOOR ¥6000

80’s Romance

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 16:00

This town’s next best 80’s party, after the one on Saturday.  Hey, how come no one ever throws 30s parties?  Oh, right; Great Depression, Nazis & the Hindenburg do not a fun event make.  ADV ¥1800 / DOOR ¥2000 (2D)

Club Mago in Osu from 22:00

The vagabond techno event has picked up stakes and moved yet again, and this time they’ve got talented Spanish producer Eduardo De La Callee along as their guest DJ.  ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Monday 30th

Stones Throw

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

A very special Golden Week event as J.Rocc from the Beat Junkies comes to town with a whole lot of dope rhymes & phat beats (man, that reads like a white man wrote it).  ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000
