The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 4/16)

I’ve not had the chance to get out and enjoy the vibrant Nagoya scene for a long time. It kinda sucks writing about so many excellent happenings, but rarely getting a chance to experience them first-hand. I’ve become the proverbial teacher who doesn’t “do” much of anything. But that all changes this Saturday when I will attempt to hit as many parties as I can manage before the sun comes up.

I’ll start things off at The Sexy Pajama Party, where I’m dropping a set of funky, disco house at 11:00. From there I will head over to the Red Rock for the Anger After Party to say “job well done” to my friends with the Nagoya Players. After that? Who knows! It’s Saturday and there’s a lot to see and do. Looks like I’ll finally be able to put the EC to some good use!

On To The Calendar

Thursday 10

white white sisters

Apollo Theater in Shinsakae from 18:30

I named WWS “my ichiban Japanese band of 2010”, because at the time no one else had a greater grasp of what was happening with music beyond Japan. And now they’re one of the most successful touring groups out of Nagoya. Proof positive, kids. I sometimes know what I’m talking about. DOOR ¥3000

Friday 11

Atari Teenage Riot

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:30

After rising to fame in the 90s as the voice of disenfranchised youth with their edgy fusion of techno and metal, ATR stepped out of the limelight around 2000. However, it seems they knew they were needed once more and came screaming back in support of the Occupy and Anonymous movements. The revolution may not be televised, but it’s got one hell of a soundtrack. DOOR ¥5800

Saturday 12

The Sexy Pajama Party

American Dining Bar BJ in Sakae from 17:30

The only party dedicated to offering the community a wild night that is both stimulating and hassle-free; we’re bringing The Sexy back! Only this time, we’re doing it in our peejays! A pajama dance party!? Why has no one in Nagoya thought to do this before? So put on your skimpiest or most comfortable bedtime clothes and join DJs PauloAtNight, dij, crushmonkey, Deren and Zeek on the dance floor. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000 (2D)

Theater Moon in Ikeshita from 11:00

Theater has become quite popular in Nagoya the past few years and it all started with the Nagoya Players, the longest-running international theatre troupe in Aichi. Their newest show is based on the famous movie 12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose, and takes an in-depth look at the jury of a murder trial as they battle each other and their own prejudices, with the life of a young man on the line. This Saturday is your final chance to see this excellent show. There are seats left for the 11:00 and 15:00 performances, but the 19:00 show is SOLD OUT. Contact their box office at to reserve your seat for the advance price of ¥2,000.

Anger – The Aftermath

Red Rock in Sakae from 22:30

After finishing their exciting run, the cast and crew of Anger are taking the closing party to the newly renovated Red Rock, where they will proceed to burn than mother-$%and#er to the ground! Seriously though, these guys and gals have worked their butts off for their craft, so they’ve earned the raucous night ahead of them. If you enjoyed the show, make sure you stop by and join the revelries. There will be a 3 hour nomihoudai and buffet for only ¥3600.

Brian Cullen and Friends

Coat of Arms in Fushimi from 19:30

Local singer/songwriter Brian Cullen has done a lot to revitalize the acoustic scene in Nagoya lately, and I am thrilled he has chosen this comfortable pub as the locale. It hearkens back to the days that I used to listen to Brian and all his musical pals croon all night at Bumphy’s. Those were good times. Make some pleasant memories of your own this Saturday. Entrance for this is event will be ¥500, with all monies going to the musicians.

Nagoya Metro Party

Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00 | ¥2,500)

Easily the best LGBTQ dance party on this side of the planet, the Nagoya Metro Party has been committed to providing a friendly party atmosphere for any and all for the past 22 years. This month their emulating the spirit of spring with the Cherry Blossom Bliss Disco Dance Social, including an amazing floor show with Lyra-h Grail and her dancing Boyz, pole dancing and fashion designer Cezar Omido. DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Johnny Winter

Bottom Line in Imaike from 17:00

Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo may go down as some of the most inane lyrics ever written, but there is no denying the staying power of this blues and rock guitar legend. When you shred as well as Johnny Winter, you ain’t got to write good lyrics. DOOR ¥9000

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

DJ OGAWA and crew are back with more progressive house music. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000 (1D)

Tagtraumer2 Japan Tour

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

I got nothing on this Berlin-based musician except that he is performing at About, which means that his music is either minimal, techno or both. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR:¥2000

Sunday 13

Nagoya Pub Quiz

The Elephant’s Nest in Fushimi from 19:45

One of Nagoya’s oldest British style pubs, The Nest is host to this fairly regular pub quiz. You can put together a team of your brightest friends, and take on the challenge of 7 rounds of questions. This month the theme is, of course, Christmas, so brush up on your holiday trivia. Entry is ¥1000 with the proceeds going to charity, and the prizes to be won include drink tickets and other stuff less important than free alcohol.

Rudy and My People Band

Shooters in Fushimi from 20:00

Rudy is a superhero. Besides being the coolest cat you will ever meet, he has the power to move anybody to dance with just his saxophone and one of the best backing bands in town. Music Charge ¥300

Tuesday 15

Jeff Beck

Nagoyashi Kokaido in Tsumai Koen from 18:30

Jonny Winter AND Jeff Beck: two of the greatest living guitar legends performing the very same week! There’s going to be some broke music fans at the end of this month, and we haven’t even gotten to Bob Dylan’s show yet! DOOR ¥10,500

Wednesday 16

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 18:00

If I could go back in time to one point in music history, the 70s in New York would place a very close second (behind the legendary Sex Pistols show at the Free Trade Hall, 1976). Patti Smith, the Ramones, Talking Heads and the influential art-punk of Television. If not for their music, we might only remember that decade for disco. And no one wants that. DOOR ¥7300

Eric Boros

K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 19:00

You gotta feel bad for this French singer/songwriter. As experimental and challenging as his compositions are, it cannot be easy to play the same week as so many industry legends. DOOR ¥2000

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 18:00

With a sound oft-described as alternative hip-hop reggae metal punk, I have to give some respect to this Welsh band for taking in so much and giving back so little. DOOR ¥3800

April 19 The Elijah Ben Gang @ Coat of Arms
April 20 Nagoya Swings @ Shooters
April 28 Love Cake @ Club JB’s (My BIRTHDAY!!!)
