I NEED A DRINK
On the cusp of my 21st birthday, I realize that I am going to need a lot of “encouragement” to keep me from shutting myself away in my room until science catches up to my need to travel back in time and not be 21. Which is why it seems pure providence that my birthday coincides with the Belgian Beer Weekend. If you weren’t around last spring, this festival is a fun way to fritter away your time off while slamming back steins of the best Monk-brewed beer available this side of East Flanders. You can catch me there after work on Friday, and, probably, every waking hour until my party on Sunday.
BAR REVIEW: SHIVA
Speaking of which, last week I announced the party would be held at Standing Bar 300. Unfortunately, they double booked that night, and we were forced to call nearly every bar and restaurant in the Shin-sakae area. Being a Sunday, and the day before a holiday, most places were either booked or closed. However, one spot was not only available, but they graciously agreed to open 2 hours early just to accommodate us. SHIVA is a very cool DJ bar located below Club Buddha. The atmosphere is laid back, and the regular batch of DJs soundtrack that vibe perfectly. And for any aspiring turntablists out there, they welcome new talent as long as you bring your own vinyl (laptop “DJs” need not apply). You can check out the great music and affordable drinks on April 28 at my free birthday party, which is also a pre-party to that night’s Pink Sexy.
On to the calendar!
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00
DJs Nick Shotter and Andy S are going to take you back to a simpler time, when house music was true house music (before Dave Guetta topped the charts with a string of songs that all sound the same). The 90s was an amazing time for club life, and at this party you can relive such classics as Love Can’t Turn Around and many more. DOOR 1000 (1D)
Bellows Lovers Night vol. 12
Bottom Line in Imaike from 18:00
I’m not sure what’s more surprising: that Nagoya has a whole event dedicated to the accordion or that there has been 11 of these events so far. DOOR 4500
Club About in Sakae from 22:00
Deep house party featuring DJs Shigeta, Matsu and many more DOOR 1500
Nadya Park Building in Sakae
Even before the opening of their huge springtime production of Romeo and Juliet (MAY 24!!!), Nameless Theatre is already looking to the future with their fall 2013 presentation of this classic tale of the pirate Long John Silver. There are auditions times at 18:00, 19:00 and 20:00. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve your spot.
Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00
In my younger years as a club kid, it was widely recognized that the best parties were always at the gay clubs. They had the hottest music, the friendliest atmosphere and the wildest crowds. 20 years and 7,000 miles later, I find a lot of comfort knowing that the spirit of the 90s club scene is still alive and kicking-ass at the Nagoya Metro Party: Nagoya’s preeminent all-sexuality-embracing party. DOOR 2500 (2D)
Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00
DJ Ogawa, the prima donna of progressive house music in Nagoya, is back with even more subtly-danceable tracks. As always, the second room shines with even more talent, including DJs Nick Edges and Tom Langford from Stereophonic Productions. If you hit up this party on Saturday, I think you’ll find very little reason to even go into the main room (aside from that being where the bar is and all). ADV 2000 / DOOR 2500 (1D)
Knew Noise presents
Spazio Rita in Yaba-cho from 18:00
I haven’t had the chance to check out this newly opened live and art space just down a ways from the Parco shopping complex, but live music from Zymotics, Sika Sika and ZZZ’s is a decent temptation. All this excellent music is brought to you by File-Under Records: the best stop in Nagoya for the best in underground vinyl.
Café Domina in Sakae from 23:00
DJ duo Force of Nature guest stars this month along with the regular Gold crew. ADV 2500 / DOOR 3000, includes free food
Club JB’s in Sakae from 20:00
DJ Hattori of Pigeon Records guests stars at the fourth anniversary of this house music party that also features an array of shop including fair trade goods and a fortune teller. It’s more akin to a bazaar than a party. ADV 2000 / DOOR 2500 (1D)
Goya Moon in Irinaka from 18:30
It’s a dark time in the local music scene, as we have to say goodbye to long time favorites like Semi-On and Bone Zero. Which is why it’s important that we not only appreciate the bands that are still together, but also look for new ones coming up. Rockit to the Moon is perfect on both counts. You can enjoy the “can’t keep us down” funk rock of the Tomo Shagger Tribute Band, and say hello to the raucous Run Pig Run and Epstein. DOOR 1000
NOSSA Gallery in Fushimi from 19:00
If you fancy yourself a shutterbug, or even know what that means, then you’re going to want to check-out this gathering of dark room enthusiasts as they share portfolios and continue the debate of black and white vs. sepia tone. DOOR 1000 (1D + snacks)
K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 18:00
File-Under records, and their label, Knew Noise Recordings, is really busy this weekend. Along with the Zymotics show on Saturday, they’re also playing host to this indie rock band on the release tour for their album Colors. ADV 2000 / DOOR 2500
