The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 3/5)

I figured I’d start the new month off on the right foot and give you a little bit of me to warm your weekend up. Partly because I love and miss y’all so damn much, and partly because it’s the end of the term an¥d all my classes are wrapping up. Regardless, here’s to hoping this marks the return to a regular, weekly E.C.

On To The Calendar

Friday 28

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00
Big names of the local DJ scene are coming together this Friday for an impressive lineup at an even more impressive price. Producer HIEI of macrophage lab and Shigeta of the popular Wideloop parties are just some of the talent that’ll be tearing it up in at the best club in Sakae. ADV ¥2000 (1D) / DOOR ¥2000

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

UK DJ Edie Select joins the regulars for this monthly tehno party

Saturday, March 1

Run for the Cure / Walk for Life

Morikoro Park in Nagakute from 9:00AM

This is the second year Run for the Cure has held their world-renowned marathon in Nagoya; an amazing effort to raise money and awareness for the fight to end breast cancer. They’re will be a 4K and an 8K run. But if you’re soft like me, perhaps the 4K walk is more to your pace. Participation fee is ¥3000 for adults, children 6-12 years are ¥1500 and kids under 6 are free.

Grand Opening

Imagine Designs in Fushimi from 15:30

A new creative space, design studio and galleria, Imagine Designs is the brainchild of local artist Robert Moore, who has been an integral part of the Nagoya scene for many years. I don’t know much about what he and his partners have planned for their space, but knowing Robert like I do, I am certain it’s grand in scale. You can check out the new digs near exit 6 of Fushimi Station, and enjoy the free refreshments.

Club JB’s in Shinsakae from 22:00

Flagship is a party for music lovers who care more about dancing then being a part of a “scene.” ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

At some point when I wasn’t looking Oily, the party with enough 70s-inspired funky music to soundtrack 100 porn flicks (bom chicka wah wah!), moved from Club Buddha to Café Domina; which just makes all that soulful music easier to find. Special guest DJ Ryuhei The Man will be in attendance. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

Sunday 2

Nagoya Swings Intermediate Workshop

Shooters in Fushimi from 18:00

Nagoya Swings “Build On Your Basics” Workshop is back with a new easy-to-remember date, the first Sunday of every month. This is a great chance to get more involved with the swing dance scene that is surprisingly vibrant in Nagoya. On this night you can get a bi-lingual dance lesson for only ¥600. Singles and couples, all are welcome.

Daihachi Ryodan

Tokuzo in Imaike from 19:00

To call Daihachi Ryodan Nagoya’s oldest gaijin band is technically true. They have the prerequisite foreigner in guitarist extraordinaire John Crawley, and they have been performing together for over 30 years. However, to summarize their illustrious career in such an over-simple manner detracts from the Latin-jazz-rock-reggae-psychedelic-enka-punk sound they’ve perfected. They only do a few shows a year, so you better catch this one. ADV ¥2800 / DOOR ¥3000

Monday 3

Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:00

The beautifully somber orchestration of Ólafur Arnalds is a welcome change from the usual fare of death metal the Nordic countries pump out of their dark, frozen heart. Oh, he used to be in a band called Fighting Shit… never mind. DOOR ¥4000

Wednesday 5

Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:30

The new release from this Portland-based band easily harkens back to the roots of indie rock, probably because they were there when it all began. DOOR ¥4300

Collections of Colonies of Bees
Apollo Theater in Shinsakae from 19:00

A tedious and pretentious name to match their instrumental art rock DOOR ¥4500

March 8 We Got Rhythm @ 8-Ball Tattoo Social Club
April 5, 6 and 12 Anger @ Theater Moon
April 12 The Sexy Pajama Party @ BJ
