The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 3/3)

In like a cowardly lion

I don’t think I can apologize enough for last week’s surreal Events Calendar. When I finally forced myself to read it all the way through, I was disturbed by the massive amounts of typos, not to mention the clear warning signs of an impending mental breakdown. Needless to say, my S.A.D.D. was working overtime. However, with the first day of March has come a return of sunnier and warmer climes! One can only hope they plan to stick around for a while. But as any veteran of the war on the Nagoya weather front can tell you: it’s a losing battle. Always, always, bet on the rain.

What’s Got Me Buzz’n: being back behind the wheels of steel

Whether it’s because I’m slowing down a bit or dance music recently just seems weak these days, I haven’t been DJing too much lately. However, I am very excited to be joining the diverse and talented who’s-who of local DJs this Saturday at X-Hall, which is quickly proving to be THE party scene of 2012. And while the lineup on this night is amazing, you should stop by the lounge area around midnight for my set. Odds are even somewhere between epic and epic FAIL.

On to the calendar!

Thursday 1st

The Graves Brothers Deluxe

K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 18:30

Freaky, psychedelic jam band from San Francisco on their Japan wide tour DOOR ¥1600

Friday 2nd

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00
For fans of old school house music like they used to make in Detroit and Baltimore DOOR ¥1500

Club Snoozer

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

Unusual night for JB’S with several DJs playing rock and indie dance music all night long with special guest DJ Halfby DOOR ¥3000

SND and NHK Japan Tour

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

German electronic music pioneer Raster Norton has brought his laptop-driven electronica tracks on a Japan-wide tour with one stop in Nagoya, this Saturday at Mago. He’s being joined by label-mate, Mark Fell and a host local techno DJs. Compared to the other two dance parties on this night, this one will definitely be more… unique. Yes, that’s the diplomatic way to put it; unique. ADV ¥2500 | ¥3000

Saturday 3rd

Haute Couture

X-Hall in Osu Kannon from 21:00

A new kind of fashionable party featuring the very talented DJs Kanbe and Hisanori H in the main room, along with Iku, Nick Edges, Take, Andy S and more. And as part of the chill lounge area, there will be sessions by Thomas Lang, Alexander and Sonoir, dij, Halycon, Cee2 and DJ m@. As a Girls Day Special, there’s a ladies only entry from 21:00~23:00, when the women will be served hors d’oeuvres and chocolate fondue. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

COLOR Vol. 22

CLUB LOVER:z in Shinsakae from 21:00
Hip Hop and dance party featuring more DJs than I wish to list here, and an entire harem’s worth of sexy dancers. Plus body art and a couple of MCs for good measure. However, this one get’s a special mention because friend to NAG MAG DJ scrying of the Obvious Circus will be there as a special guest spinning his assorted remixes and mashups. DOOR ¥2500

Da Doo Ron Ron

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 23:30

It’s very rare to find an event in Nagoya that that I have no complaints about. However, with live performances from The Bunnies and NAG MAG faves Adas Mexico, I feel oddly content, which doesn’t sit well with me. I need something to mock… DOOR ¥3150

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

Sometimes with Japan, you just have to shake your head. This event takes its poorly-planned name from the initials of their three headlining DJs, Kaos, Kent and Keita. And while DJ Kaos does spin some funky disco house music, I am finally putting my foot down to horribly named events. DOOR ¥2500

Sound Bar P.O.d in Sakae from 23:00

The BIRTH DJs bring “the power of rock” to this hidden but excellent sound bar just down from the Nagoya TV Tower.  According to their website, you can expect music from the likes of Sum 41, Green Day, 311, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and more. DOOR ¥2200

Party Up vol. 13

The Hub in Sakae from 20:30

DJ PauloAtNight, the hardest working DJ in town, is going to be dropping his high energy mix of dance hits at the most-packed bar in town. The always fun DJ Ghost Willy is also on this night, along with MC Cone. Plus, it’s free!

Sunday 4th

… I got nothing. Seriously, feel free to go nuts on Saturday, because you ain’t missing a thing by sleeping it off on this day.
