The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 3/3)

Before I moved here, I told my family that I would only stay in Japan for three years at most. And just having passed the 11 year mark, I realize that my estimation was off by quite a bit. But, in my defense, how could I have known that I would’ve fallen so hard for this city, its music and its people. Still, I don’t want to be one of those expats who’s always going on about how long they’ve been here. So, from now on, much like my birthdays, I’ll stop counting the years and focus on enjoying them instead.

On to the calendar!

Friday 26

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

The driving mixes of Argentinean producer Hernán Cattáneo are the kind of dance fuel the house heads at Mago need to go until the sun comes up. Along with crowd favorite DJ OGAWA, this night is going to be grand. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

Nagoya TV Tower in Sakae from 10:00

Running from today until March 14, this installation from talented artists Lauriane Carra and Lorie Bayen-El-Kaim will transform our beloved TV Tower into a living, breathing organism. “It interweaves concepts of life and breath, cloud-covered spaces and creates a zone for people to interact, reflect (and relax)… Fixtures within the installation will inflate and deflate at a slow and peaceful rhythm like someone breathing – seemingly injecting life into the symbolic heart of the city.”

ADULTS ¥700 / STUDENTS ¥600 / KIDS ¥300

Saturday 27

Good Ol’ Boys III

GC Live in Shinsakae from 19:00

Featuring the down-home, honky-tonk stylings of Brian Carpenter, Dan Buschman, Mark Oman, Nathan Ashley and Ron Schröter. A night of drinkin’, swearin’ and singin’ has been strongly implied. DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

honey dip

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

Erotic festival honey dip is a wild one, with a live bondage show, body painting and erotic dancing. Advance tickets are ¥2500 (or ¥3000 at the door). But if you come in fetish dress you’ll get in for free; with one stipulation: mild attire need not apply. So, that ball gag just ain’t going to cut it. Time to break out your latex zentai.

Lounge Vio in Shinsakae from 18:00

This event offers the best of R&B, soul, blues and jazz played on their original vinyl by some of Nagoya’s most-knowledgeable DJs. They also got live performances by The Absolude, The Zip and The Hourrah and a complimentary dance lesson. DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Velvet Sunday

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

A night featuring the chilliest of house music from DJs Shigeta, Takahashi & Jin; never mind that it’s once again moved locales or that it’s not even on Sunday anymore. ADV ¥1500 / DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Sunday 28

Harmonium Parlour

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 19:00
This open mic and art space is still the best event to see and get seen by the many talented members of our community. In the upstairs gallery this month they’ve got a Yoga Photo Exhibition from local guru Ali Rose. In an effort to raise awareness for The Nagoya Walkathon, our community’s biggest charity event of the year, she will have a demonstration of Acroyoga along with the exhibition. There is a suggested donation of ¥2000, which also gets you a ticket to Walkathon 2016 on May 22. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Acoustic Sunset

Red Rock in Fushimi from 19:00

The Ghost of Matsubara continues to bring the joy of unplugged music to live houses and bars across our fair city. On this night he is once again joined by Nagoya’s ichiban kawaii duo, Brian Cullen and Sarah Mulvey. Only ¥300.

Turntable Films

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 18:00

The fun music from Kyoto’s Turntable Films is the perfect Sunday soundtrack; bouncy and cheerful. Highly recommended. DOOR ¥3000

Lounge Vio in Shinsakae from 19:00

Danielle Johnson’s Brooklyn-born sound is a mix of the synthpop of bands like The Human League and the indietronica of The Postal Service… so, yeah, I love it. Choosing between her and Turntable Films is no easy task. DOOR ¥5500

Nagoya Pub Quiz

The Elephant’s Nest in Fushimi from 19:45

This regular quiz night gives you and your friends the chance to field a team and challenge the sharpest minds in the Nagoya pub circuit. Entry is ¥1000.
