The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 3/25)

Seriously, Nagoya Weather!  It’s almost April.  You need to get with the program.  There are a ton of hanamis just around the corner, and if we don’t see some warmer/dryer weather soon, you’re going to disappoint a lot of people.

On to the calendar!

Friday 23rd

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00
This night of electro-flavored goodness features Tokyo’s DJ KYOKO, who’s releasing a new CD on this night.  DOOR ¥2500

Marcel Knopf

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

However, if you’re looking for something a bit less banging, Berlin DJ Marcel Knopf’s tech house should do the trick.  DOOR ¥2500

Daishi Dance

Club Mago & VIO in Shinsakae from 22:00

Now don’t think I’ve forgotten you house heads.  This night celebrating the newest release from one of Japan’s most popular producers is just what you need. The party features Daishi Dance & Shinji Takeda and more playing Mago, while the sultry vocals of Shaula Vogue (and more DJs) will be on the VIO side.  ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:30

And as if that weren’t enough club fare for one evening, the Factory is even showing some love for us children of the 80s (and all the wannabes).  Featuring another amazing live performance from ZENGO KANKEI (a guy whose knowledge of New Wave music puts my own to shame) & DJ Music Machine.  DOOR ¥1000 (1 D)

Saturday 24th

Budo Grape

Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:00

Not only is Budo Grape no longer on hiatus, they are back with a slew of live gigs all over Japan this year! Can a new album be far away?  This Grape-head hopes not!  DOOR ¥2300

Dinner Theater Auditions

Shooters in Fushimi from 12:00

The Nagoya Players are holding open auditions on Saturday, March 24th for their next dinner theater show: “3 Guys, One Pub”, a comedy by local writer Adam Miller.  In the vein of The Office, this show is a humorous, slice-of-life take on a mundane situation many of us have found ourselves in; three friends and their night out at a local bar.  There are roles for 10 adults (7M, 3F).

Peter Hunnigale Japan Charity Tour

Montage Lounge in Sakae from 22:00

I haven’t been out to this chill night spot on the east side of Sakae in a while, and a night of smooth reggae music from this legend of the industry could just be reason enough to get reacquainted with it.  Even if it’s your first time there, you’ll definitely dig the great music, good food & comfortable atmosphere.  ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

Burlesque Night

Lush Underground in Sakae from 18:00

Here’s a venue I haven’t mentioned in a while.  LUSH, which is just above JB’s in Sakae, is predominantly a hip hop club… and that’s all I got.  Seriously, I am ashamed to admit that I haven’t been to LUSH in over 6 years.  However, that may have to change this weekend as they are set to celebrate their 20th Anniversary with so many DJs they must only be allowing them 15 minutes each to play.  The icing on this birthday cake is that the lovely LBST dancers are doing a floor show.  Now, this party extends to both Cipher & the very cool Soul Ground, all in the same building, but be prepared to pay a separate charge at all three doors.  LUSH ¥2000 / CIPHER ¥1500 / SOUL GROUND ¥300

Sunday 25th

The Scrooges Last Hurrah

Bar Ripple in Shinsakae from 19:00

For every local band that reaches even a modicum of success, there is a long line of ones who are left behind.  It’s even more tragic when they’re as talented as Miggy & the Scrooges.  Sadly, they are playing their final show on this night, so do NOT miss it.  There will also be an art exhibition by the Masters of Death.  DOOR ¥1000

Harmonium Parlour

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 19:00

While others spend their time just writing about the local scene (ahem!), Semi-On creates it with their monthly open mic and art space.  Besides all the great performances on the main stage, the upstairs gallery will play host to the work of 4 artists: Yuco, Misa, Yui & Uni.  DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Rudy & My People Band

Shooters in Fushimi from 20:00

I was very happy to hear that this act was bringing their soulful jazz & funk music to anywhere else other than where they normally play.  However, I won’t focus on that horrible place, and instead strongly encourage you to drop by and check out this amazing saxophonist and the equally talented My People Band.  If enough people support them on this night, perhaps I’ll never have to mention that other place ever again.  DOOR ¥300

Live Jam Session

Monsieur in Kasadera from 18:00
I don’t have a lot of details on this one, but I do know that NAG MAG favorite Takashi Terada will be joining 3 other musicians on this night for some unscripted rock & blues.  Plus, it’s a great chance to check out a venue that even I’ve never been.  DOOR ¥3000

Tuesday 26th

My Morning Jacket

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:30

Man, I love this band, and I was very pleased when they got some well-earned media attention with their last few albums.  However, that very same attention also brought with it exuberant ticket prices.  DOOR ¥6500

Wednesday 28th

Apollo Theater in Shinsakae from 19:30

These four ladies from Norway have a very cool sound that falls somewhere between ska & 50s pop.  BIG thanks to DJ Yamada & File-Under Records for bringing them to Japan for everyone’s ears to enjoy.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED  DOOR ¥3500

Michael Schenker

Diamond Hall in Shinskaae from 18:00

For the life of me, I have no idea why this ex-Scorpions/UFO guitarist is so popular in Japan that people will still pay 80 bones just to hear him wail on his admittedly-awesome Gibson Flying V.  DOOR ¥8000

Upcoming Events

April 8 Hana-Nabe Picnic @ Tsurumai Koen
