The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 3/23)

Pardon my brevity, but my holiday just started and I’m eager to finally enjoy some of the excellent events I write about. See you out and about.

On To The Calendar

Thursday 20

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

This party always manages to bring the bass, but this month they’re dropping bombs of shake all over your holiday. The hip hop unit SIMI LAB destroys everything, including your misconceptions of J-rap. DOOR ¥3000

Ringo Deathstarr

Tight Rope in Sakae from 19:00

Austin-based Ringo Deathstarr does some lovely indie pop that’s more akin to the Cure than their name would have you believe. DOOR ¥4800

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

I was digging on one of Berlin DJ Jan Krueger’s funk-infused mixes while writing this. An hour later and I realized I’m still listening to the same damn song. Nice try, Jan. You almost got me to enjoy techno. DOOR ¥3000

Friday 21

Bromance Records Japan Tour

X-Hall in Osu from 21:00

This French label isn’t fucking around; they’ve brought their 3 biggest guns to assault the Nagoya scene. DJs Sam Tiba & Jommy would be enough to make this party. Including the incomparable Brodinski is sweet overkill. ADV ¥3500 / DOOR ¥4000

Club Mago in Imaike from 23;00

DJs Shigeta, Kon and a few others are celebrating 14 years of doing up the house music thing. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Saturday 22

St. Patrick’s Day Party

Red Rock in Sakae from 18:00

You can enjoy the amazing new interior of The Red Rock this Saturday with Nagoya Friends and they are putting on their green (just a little late). You can get all you want to eat & drink for only 3500 yen, which includes a special menu from the revitalized Red Rock kitchen; including Irish stew, colcannon, beef and Guinness pie and more.

Wanna Be Child

StandBar Junction in Sakae from 19:00

DJ Take is back at this cool bar with reasonably priced libations, along with a live cacophony of fiddle, accordion & djembe and belly dancing. Always a hodge-podge of neatness with Project Stroke.

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

I’m a huge fan of Tokyo’s DJ EMMA’s rocking house mixes, and am always happy when he headlines this regular dance party. To be honest, his sets are some of the best you’re likely to hear at Mago, after DJ OGAWA that is. Luckily, on this night, you’ll get both big name DJs for the price of one. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500 (1D)

Happy Birthday Party

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00

If you have a May birthday, you are welcome to piggyback on this celebration for DJs Nick Shotter, Matt Stanton and many of the other talented people that make The PF the best spot off the beaten path. DOOR ¥2000 (2D)

Dean & Matthew

Strikers in Tsurumai from 19:00

I love the talented combo of Dean and Matthew. It’s the kind of electropop goodness this town needs more of. However, Strikers… DOOR ¥1000

Sunday 23

Nagoya Writes

Kameshima Community Center from 15:00 – 17:00

Come and join this local writers group for an afternoon of fiction and poetry readings!

Wednesday 26

Dark Tranquility

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

Damn. I almost thought I wouldn’t have to listen to any crappy death metal bands this month. Thanks, Swedish band Dark Tranquility. You ruined a near-perfect game. DOOR ¥7000

April 5, 6 & 12 Anger @ Theater Moon
April 12 The Sexy Pajama Party @ BJ’s
