The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 3/20)

VALENTINE’S REDUX

Gentleman, today’s (pretend you’re reading this on Thursday! -NM) yesterday was the day you reciprocated all that chocolate goodness you received last month. And as asinine as White Day may sound, trust me: you do NOT want to arrive home without something sweet for your special someone. If you forget, perhaps you can take her to the Honen Matsuri on Friday and get her one of the infamously phallic chocolate-dipped bananas. It’s the most action you’re going to get after dropping the ball on White Day.

STILL BUZZING

After an embarrassingly long hiatus, the Nagoya Buzz Podcast is back this week! Technically, the podcast restarted last week, but since I wasn’t able to attend; it doesn’t count. Nagoya’s most downloaded p’cast now has a new direction, a new host and the same old spiel from yours truly. So check it out now, and then come back and finish the newsletter. There’s a lot more happening that I don’t mention on the air.

On to the calendar!

Friday 15

Grand Opening Party

Coat of Arms in Fushimi from 11:30

Nagoya’s nightlife will become even better with the opening of a new pub this Friday. Conveniently located between Maruonochi and Fushimi stations, the Coat of Arms is poised to become the new bar where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came. Friday’s opening party is sure to pack both floors and the outside patio, so make sure you get there early and grab your spot. Open until 1 AM

Honen Matsuri

Tagata Shrine in Komaki

Or “Penis Festival” if you’re nasty! About a 30 minute train ride from Nagoya, this popular fertility celebration always attracts a shockingly large number of people willing to trample one another for a chance to touch a dong idol being paraded around town. Fun for the whole family!

ROTO Sound Stream

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00

If the extent of your knowledge of 60s music begins with The Beatles and ends at Woodstock, then you will be in for a fine surprise on this night when you hear some Freakbeat, Northern Soul, Bossanova, Garage and more courtesy of the ROTO DJs. DOOR ¥1000

RICE

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

A night of enjoyable minimal techno music from American DJ Daniel Bell. DOOR ¥3500

Addition

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

In their ever-increasing effort to attract new customers, JB’s is showcasing live painting and something known as a “candle artist” on this night. Not really sure what that is or what it has to do with the dance music of DJ Akira Saotome, but kudos to them for thinking way outside the box. DOOR ¥2500

Saturday 16

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The Osu Shopping Arcade from 12:00

I don t know about you, but I’d much rather get my luck from kissing the Blarney Stone rather than molesting a giant wooden penis. But, hey, that’s just me. Get on your green this Saturday and head to the Osu Shopping Arcade for one of Nagoya most popular international festivities, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The event kicks off with live music at noon with the parade starting at 14:00. Around 17:00, the party shifts to the many pubs in the area, with the best drink deals happening at Shooters. However, The Elephant’s Nest always has a decent turnout, and this year The Coat of Arms is getting in on the action with a performance from Brian Cullen and friends.

ageHa Japan Tour 2013

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Combining Okinawan traditional music with dope beats, Ryukyudisko is high on my list of Japanese DJs to catch live. And seeing as this is also the duos 10th anniversary, and they will be supported by several DJs from Mago’s regular roster, this is the best chance! DOOR ¥3000

W-Double Anniversary

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

The Drum and Bass and Burgers party is turning 9 years old and residents DJs tA.hA.rA, Smoker, HALCYON and super duo ZIG-NINE will all be there, as well as special guest MC Cardz. DOOR ¥3000

Penguinmarket Records presents

Club Rock n’ Roll in Shinsakae from 17:00

A decent collection of eclectic rock with performances from local bands egoistic 4 leaves, FU-MU and more. DOOR ¥2800

Sunday 17

DJ Kefir

Club iD in Sakae from 19:00

Legendary Russian DJ “KEFIR” will come back once again to iD cafe, Nagoya!

With a special LIVE ART and MUSIC collaboration with local artist “JACK” from Jack’s Factory!

The first 300 people who come to iD Cafe on this night will receive a special mix CD by DJ KEFIR!!!

Wednesday 20

Julie Doiron Japan Tour 2013

K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 18:30

A girl and a guitar; a simple formula but it works. DOOR ¥3800

DuckFace

Taurus in Shinsakae from 19:00

I’m faced with a dichotic conundrum (double pretentious word score!). On one hand, there’s the pleasant voice and poignant lyrics of Ms. Doiron, but I could also catch the rabble-rousing alt-rock of DuckFace. Well, I guess I should buy local. It doesn’t hurt that the cheaper ticket will leave me more beer money. DOOR ¥1500
