The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 3/15)

NO NUKES

This Friday is the 5 year remembrance of the triple disaster that befell the Tohoku region and all of the people we lost on that terrible day. At 11:00 the following Saturday, a group of concerned citizens of the world will gather at the base of the TV Tower for the No Nukes Demo, a peaceful demonstration against the government’s decision to restart the nuclear power plant in Sendai with potentially more to come. Events for the day will include a protest march from Sakae through Nishikidori and around to the Osu Kannon area. There will also be live music, workshops, fundraising campaigns and information regarding government officials and their track record towards nuclear power in Japan. If the similar marches in Tokyo and Osaka are any indication, this happening will be huge and a show to the government where the people stand on this very pressing matter.

On to the calendar!

Spring is in the air, and that means flowers, warmer weather and Metro’s March Menagerie, an all-night party with amazing show times starring the royal court of Nagoya Queens Miku Divine, Lyra h.Grail, Lady BubbLicouS, and more. This night also marks the final Metro set for superstar DJ eM who is leaving Japan on a world tour. In this world where the hateful seem to be the loudest, sometimes you just have to drown out their noise with your fabulousness! DOOR ¥2500 (2D)

True Classic

GC Live in Shinsakae from 19:30

A rowdy night awaits with some good ol’ rockabilly and honky-tonkin’ with Duck and The Billys and Borrowed Brass; cowboy boots not required but highly recommended. DOOR ¥1500

GOODWEATHER

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

As far as club music goes, there are few more challenging than drum and bass. The fast breakbeats tell your feet to just go crazy, but the accompanying deep bass lines make you want to just nod your head in agreement. The resulting syncopation can be a challenge to the uninitiated, but the work of UK producer Sam Binga is a good place to dip your toes in. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

SMASH

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

DJ Ogawa will once again be manning the decks for another epic progressive mix at his monthly house party. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Oasis Night

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 17:00

In an effort to stay the cold hand of death for another year, HMV records in Sakae is offering free admission to this alternative rock DJ party. All you have to do is purchase a CD from their special Oasis Night corner, which will only cost you roughly the ¥3000 they usually charge for a record, plus any extra costs for a device that still plays that archaic tech. Or you could just pay the door fee of ¥1500.

LADY FLASH & For Tracy Hyde

K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 18:00

I’m always on the lookout for good local music, and K.D. Japon is the best source for the Japanese indie scene. Still unsure about these two bands, but their new albums show some promise. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500

Sunday 13

Acoustic Sunday

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:00

A quick shout-out to Shooters and their event coordinator Andrea, who’ve done so much to help bring live music back to Nagoya. Thank you for providing us so many excellent nights featuring talented musicians like Ghost of Matsubara and Mike Green. DOOR ¥300

FUNSHINE

Red Rock in Sakae from 19:30

In this month’s magazine, I accidently wrote that the multi-instrumentalist Bob Vidler was playing with Tom and Mike at Shooters. But instead he will be doing his unplugged show with slide-guitar virtuoso David Dycus on the same night at Nagoya favorite Aussie-themed pub. Rock at the rock!

Bottom Line in Imaike from 18:30

Sharing their ministry through music, the Latter Rain Christian Fellowship Church choir returns to Japan, and you don’t even have to put on your Sunday best. DOOR ¥6300

Tuesday 15

Tesla Manaf

GC Live in Shinsakae from

I’ve seen many talented guitarists, but the fury at which this Indonesian prodigy attacks his guitar is as worrisome as it is beautiful. I just keep waiting for his frets to come aflame.

The Nagoya Meet & Greet

Shooters in Fushimi from 11:30
Enjoy a nice lunch with a friendly international crowd. Or just show up for a chance at the 2 round trip tickets to Okinawa they’re giving away. R.S.V.P. at info@japan-mobility.com
