MUSIC TO WARM YOUR SOUL
Yes, I know it is cold out. Cannot go one hour without someone exclaiming “samui!” But I’m here to save you from this winter of discontent. There’s so much good happening in the live houses and clubs of Nagoya that you’ll only have to venture into the frozen wastes between gigs. It all goes down this month, and it starts this weekend. So, f%&$ you, March, and thanks for the music.
On to the calendar!
Club JB’s in Shinsakae from 23:30
Recent flack about my obvious distaste of certain music has led me to realize I should be more open. So, instead of dismissing Polish producer Hatti Vatti as just another techno DJ, I checked out his newest CD Worship Nothing. The enjoyable combination of simple rhythms and calming vocals taught me to not judge a book by its genre, except for death metal. It always sucks. DOOR ¥2500
I love techno.
Club About in Sakae from 21:00
Well, I do not. But if you do, Club About does it better than anyone else. DOOR ¥1000
Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:00
It’s as if every one of my favorite Japanese bands have conspired together to make sure I’m broke by the end of March. Baiting your cash-trap with the bubbly synth-pop of Budo÷Grape, well-played, March. Well-played. DOOR ¥2800
Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00 Guest DJ Kyoko and 2BOY from Tokyo with NMZ, kiyomizu and many other local electro and house heroes. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000
Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 17:00
I’m willing to overlook the cringe-inducing name of this party, but only because this month’s special guest is DJ Neel from Italy. His folk -inspired mixes are so much better then so much happening in the clubs of late. DOOR ¥2500
Nagoyashi Kokaido I Tsurumai from 18:30
Perhaps the greatest metal band ever, Judas Priest has a new album, Redeemer of Souls, and a world-wide tour to prove they still kick all the ass. If 100 bucks seems like a lot of money, consider the insurance cost of covering the 63 year old Rob Halford driving a motorcycle on to the stage. DOOR ¥9800
Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00
Even I’m not pretentious enough to claim that I enjoy the instrumental post-rock of this Scottish band. DOOR ¥6500
Huck Finn in Imaike from 19:00
Winning on the right side of pop punk (the one that doesn’t substitute image for talent), this Dutch bands Japan tour is making a brief stop at the best live house for just such a band. Lots of loud things happening at Huck Finn this month. Go check out this favorite dive! ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000
Blue Note in Sakae
Keyboardist Brad Mehldau and drummer Mark Guiliana come together in a sound that I’m just going to call space jazz. Two shows, DOOR ¥8500
Huck Finn in Imaike from 18:00
On the fourth anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake, this collection of thrash metal bands, including Bazooka from Taiwan, is holding a benefit. Experimental band Crocodile Bambi will also be there for fans of good music. DOOR ¥2000
