What’s Got Me Buzz’n: travelin’ music

Sometimes you just need to shake the dust off of your feet and hit the road. I love Nagoya, but even I need to get the hell out of here every once in a while; and good music is a better excuse than most. Luckily this weekend you ain’t got to go too far to find it either. Our sister city of Toyohashi (AKA Chikuwa Hills) often plays host to many talented performers, mostly due in part to the hard work of one Peter Lyons, front man for the popular alt-rock band, molotov u.s.k. He’s the one you have to thank for all of the excellent music this Saturday, and I know for a fact that he only accepts thanks in the form of alcohol.

On to the calendar!

Friday, February 3

I Hate This Place

K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 19:00

Jump-start February with the beautifully orchestrated indietronica of I Hate This Place with special guests, and NAG MAG favorites, Budo Grape. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

Story Of The Year

Club Quattro in Sakae from 19:00

This American alt-rock band used to be called Big Blue Monkey. They should’ve stuck with that. Their music still sucked, but at least that name was less misleading. DOOR ¥5800

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

A special live performance from Joi which is Winter Spencer (percussions) and Shintaro Kurihara (sax&flute) with DJs & dance performances. DOOR ¥3000

I.M.K. Exhibition

Marble 2F Gallery in Osu from 11:00

Some have called Mami Ito the Annie Leibovitz of Nagoya… OK, that’s just me, but only because she makes everyone she photos look so damn good. If you’ve been to a big event in the past 5 years, there’s a good chance Mami was there capturing the moment as only she can. Her keen eye & willingness to get right in the middle of the action have led to a series of candid, dynamic shots, which will be on display until Tuesday 7th along side two other talented photographers.

Saturday, February 4

Alien Invasion!

Cavolo in Toyohashi from 19:30

This aforementioned night provides the hottest live music available this Saturday… though the Salsa bands at X-Hall might beg to differ. However, they would have a hard time igniting the stage like the best rock bands of two cities: molotov u.s.k & Snack Mama from Toyohashi with Ghost of Matsubara & Shibata Heavy Industries from Nagoya. Plus, they can do it for a whole ¥500 less: DOOR ¥1500 (1D)

Nagoya International Speed Dating

The Red Rock in Sakae from 18:00

As much Valentine’s Day sucks, going it solo could make it exponentially worse. So, as a last ditch effort to circumvent the pity of all the happy couples, you could try speed dating. It’s like normal dating except with amphetamines… or something. I’m not really sure how it works, but it’s very popular & touts a more impressive success rate than Asian Friend Finder. ADV ¥2500 (men) & ¥2000 (women) / DOOR +¥500 (1D + food)

Laurent Garnier

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

While most deep house music could be used as a sure-fire cure for insomnia, this French producer makes a decent attempt to keep his tracks fresh with sultry vocals & funky rhythms… and then sometime he just thinks WAY outside of his box. DOOR ¥3000

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Album release party from this Tokyo Dubstep pioneer featuring a whole cast of DJs with that bass-heavy warble. DOOR ¥3000

Fiesta Latina de Nagoya

X-Hall in Osu from 23:00

Or if you prefer you music with more of a “south of the border” sound, than this night of Salsa, Latin pop, reggaeton, Cubanada, Cumbia and Criollo (OK, now it seems like they’re just making up genres) sould satisfy. The bill features a lot of DJs, singers & sexy dancers, and the Facebook page boasts an impressive “attending” list. It seems that the Latin community, as well as X-Hall, can no longer be ignored. DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Nagoya Club Jazz Festival

Live & Lounge Vio in Shinsakae from 19:00

Club jazz is pretty big in Japan, and this party offers over 10 hours of that not-too-chill-to-dance music featuring guest DJ Yoshihiro Okino of Kyoto Jazz Massive, a live performance from JiLL-Decoy Association & too many more here to list. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

Sunday, February 5

Bone Zero

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:00

This collection of good ol’ boys & their spot on covers of classic rock favorites is just the raucous conclusion your weekend needs! And when you get the chance, make sure you shout out “Free Bird” one or 30 times. Tom & crew love that! ¥300 music charge

Club Buddha in Shinsaake from 19:00

I got my start as a DJ playing indy rock, so I’ve got an obvious soft spot in my heart for these gigs, especially when they feature DJ Yamada of File-Under Records in Osu, the best supplier of indie label vinyl in Aichi. DOOR ¥2000

Peabo Bryson

Blue Note in Sakae (2 shows)

Though his resume if full of many accomplishments over his impressive 35-year career, Mr. Bryson is most remembered for writing & singing A Whole New World for the movie Aladdin, a staple in karaoke bars all over. May God forgive him this sin, because I certainly will not. DOOR ¥8500

Monday, February 6th

Avril Lavigne

Nihon Gaishi Hall from 19:00

Last May, the princess of faux-punk, along with many others, cancelled their Japan tours in wake of the triple Tohoku disasters. And though there are so many other reasons not to go, “abandons her fans” is at the very top. DOOR ¥8500 / ¥16000
