The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 2/12)

JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS OUT…

I’d like to say that I had a good reason for my extended absence from doing the EC, but to be honest I just wanted to see how long it would take before anyone noticed. I know it’s mind-blowing that someone as critical of others’ hard work as me is also a needy, attention-whore. Selfish reasons aside, it only took a month for someone to notice the absence of my hard work. It was my editor, so… I’m not sure if that makes me feel better or worse. Just kidding. It’s worse.

On To The Calendar

Thursday 6

Lumineers

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

I will always appreciate this band and their ilk for breathing life into the folk scene, but I can never forgive them for helping douchebag hipsters coopt the Americana sound.  DOOR ¥6000

Peabo Bryson and Deniece Williams

Blue Note in Sakae for 2 shows

If you prefer your music with more soul and gospel, and with a far less pretentious fan base, you could see these 2 Grammy winners perform at Nagoya’s answer to the question: Where do I take my parents when they come to visit me? DOOR ¥8,900

Friday 7

Tedeschi Trucks Band

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 18:00

And speaking of Grammys, the award winning blues rock of this Florida band would be a homesick remedy for this wayward southern son, but at that price I think I’ll stay home and drink Jack Daniels instead. NOTE: Diamond Hall and Apollo Theater have new websites, if you care. DOOR ¥8700

Present Tense

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

The lovely DJ Julietta is a master of the slow-build, layering funky tracks one on top of each other, ever-so-subtlely, until you find yourself on the dancfloor with no notion of how you got there. DOOR ¥3000

Avril Lavigne

Nippon Gaishi Hall in Shinsakae from 18:00

If you think 90 bones is a lot to pay for “Standing” tickets, that’s because you haven’t seen their “Premium Standing” tickets for ¥16,000. Hell, for that price, “Premium” better be industry-speak for blowjob… or at the very least a handy. DOOR ¥9000

Saturday 8

Brian Cullen and Friends

Coat of Arms in Fushimi from 19:30

When the touring acts that come through my city are as lackluster as this month’s batch, I revel in the fact that we still have some great local musicians to get me through. The last time Brian Cullen, the best Irish folk singer this side of the planet, played Coat of Arms, we were treated to an entertaining hodgepodge of songwriters, instrumentalists and singers. This month could top that as Tom Fallon, Matthew Hegstrom, Toma Shagga and more are slated to perform on this night. And with both Tom, Brian and drummer Imai all in attendance, could a reunion of Iznit Obvious be in the works?! Entrance for this is event will be ¥500, with all monies going to the musicians.

Nagoya Metro Party

Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00 | ¥2,500)

No one does Valentine’s better or more risqué than Nagoya’s preeminent all-sexualities-encouraged party. This year, Metro’s Hearts Day Hop has a Carnivale flavor, so I imagine that involves Madame d’Metro done up Carmen Miranda-style with a hat full of candy hearts and fruit.

DJ Craze

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

Every turntablist is a DJ, but not every DJ is a turntablist. DJ Craze earned that title the honest way, when he won the DMC Championship 3 consecutive years; a record that has never been broken. DOOR ¥3500

VIKING

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00 | ¥2,000)

Featuring DJ Rie, who’s most famous for her line of mix CDs. Given that any kid with a laptop can make a decent mix these days, she is going to have to work extra hard to prove she’s more than a pretty face meant to increase album sales. DOOR ¥2000

Wideloop

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 23;00

DJs Shigeta, Kon and a few others doing up the house music thing. ADV ¥1500 / DOOR ¥2000

DEPICT

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

Several live art and dance performances alongside some of About’s best DJs makes for one cool gallery show. DOOR ¥2000

Sunday 9

R.O.A. iTunes Release Party

Cream Bar in Sakae from 22:00

Local hip-hop maestro Vinny Vintage’s new CD has been out since late 2013, but the release parties just keep on coming. But when you’ve produced an album as good as this, you have every right to an extended celebration. Helping Vinny to rejoice the iTunes release is special guest from Jamaica DJ GANA GANA as well as Chriz Jay, Ari and many more. This party is free!

Monday 10

JUMBOMAX DX

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Guest DJ Takkyu Ishino and his techno mix are back… again. At least they thought to include local legend DJ Take to bring some funk to this increasingly redundant party. DOOR ¥3000

Run Come Celebrate

Club Ozon in Sakae from 21:00

All the way from NYC comes DJ Ganja Fingaz, whose reggae sound is an odd choice to celebrate the grand opening of Russeluno, a golf pro shop… with attitude. DOOR ¥3000

Wednesday 12

Valentine Smasher Tour
Club 3Star in Imaike from 16:30
Well, if you hate Valentine’s Day, as well as light, life and happiness, then you will probably enjoy the death metal of Septic Flesh. ¥5500
