The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 2/12)

From all the red and pink ornamentation strewn across town I gather that we have come to the month of love. And since the temperature has taken a turn towards the witch’s teat territory (READ: cold as a), I welcome any excuse to cuddle my loved one extra close this February. To help get you in the Valentine mood or at least help you fight off hypothermia, there are plenty of HOT happenings going down in Nag-town to last you well into the spring thaw. Stay warm, Nagoya!

On To The Calendar

Friday 6

Four Minutes Til Midnight

Club Zion in Kamimaezu from 18:00

During their past tours, I was dismissive of this California band’s music. However this time I’m finding the appeal of their funk rock, though I can’t really say why. Maybe my tastes have matured, or maybe I just long for the mid-90s, the last time this sound was fresh. DOOR ¥2500

Who Trio

Tokuzo in Imaike from 18:30

Any jazz fans out there will enjoy the wide range of styles of this international super group. ADV 3000 / DOOR 3300

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00 | ¥1,500)

Join guest DJ CADILLAC and the TRIP DJs for a night of 60s R&B, Soul, Jazz, Funk and more.

I love techno.

Club About in Sakae from 22:00

Well, I do not. But if you do, Club About does it better than anyone else. DOOR ¥1000

Saturday 7

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

Of all the great small clubs in Nagoya, Domina is one of my favorites. It always has fresh and weird parties going down every week, like this oddly-named soul, R&B and funk music event. DOOR ¥1500

Sunday 8

Matthew Plays Elton

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 19:00

This local king of the cover ballads is bringing his spot-on covers of Sir Elton back to the Factory with special guest Basonhead, who will be doing their best Radiohead impression. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Nagoya Pub Quiz – 2014 edition

The Elephant’s Nest in Fushimi from 19:45

This regular quiz night gives you and your friends the chance to field a team and challenge the sharpest minds in the Nagoya pub circuit. Face seven challenging rounds of questions inspired by this month’s theme: 2014. Yes, you can expect questions about everything last year had to offer, from the ice bucket challenge to the World Cup. Entry is ¥1000 with the proceeds going to charity.

Let’s eat love

Lounge Vio in Shinsakae from 17:00

Tribal, spiritual and a little weird, new-age percussionist group RabiRabi is coming to Nagoya for a night of live music, dancing, chanting and, just a wild guess here, lots and lots of patchouli. DOOR ¥2000

Tuesday 10

At The Gates

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

It just wouldn’t be a live calendar without the requisite death metal music from a Nordic country. This Swedish band fills my monthly quota of suffering. DOOR ¥7000

Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00
It’s a bit of a tradition for clubs to put on some decent late night parties the night before a national holiday. And since Wednesday is Kenkoku Kinen no Hi (whatever that means), you’ve got a good reason to stay out late with this collection of JB’s all-stars spinning a wide-range of the hottest of dance music. ADV ¥1500 / DOOR ¥2000

Thursday 12

Mötley Crüe

Nippon Gaishi Hall in Kasadera from 18:00

Through the overdoses, convictions and scandals, it’s something of a miracle that these glam rockers made it this far. But this is supposedly the last Crüe tour ever, and your final chance to catch Vince, Tommy, Mick and Nikki live, at least until the royalties from this one run out. DOOR ¥13,000

Lounge Vio in Shinsakae from 18:00

Vio is my new favorite nightspot for weirdly wonderful and wonderfully weird music. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3500
