The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 1/9)

As 2013 draws to a close, I’m left a bit reflective of all that happened in our community. It was an amazing 365 days full of parties, live performances, art exhibits, charity events, theatre and all sorts of other shenanigans. It was a year of welcoming new talent, but also saying goodbye to old friends. We danced together. We laughed together. We cried together. And do you remember that night we got totally shit-faced on cheap happoshu in Central Park? What a hangover!

All in all, this was a great year, but I, for one, am ready to kick it to the curb. 2014 is going to put all the shit we did this year to shame with its awesomeness! But before we can get started, we have to wrap things up on the year of the Snake. So, since my holiday starts Friday, I am leaving you with a jam-packed EC that will carry you all the way into the first week of 2014 with countdown parties, live bands and more.

So, Happy New Year, Nagoya! Thank you for your continued support. Because of you, The Obvious Circus is still Nagoya’s number 1 source for shit to do!

On To The Calendar

Friday 27

The 8th Day

Le Jardin in Hamamatsu from 23:00

My only resolution for the New Year is more of me. This means you’re going to be seeing even more self-serving posts about my gigs around town and beyond, starting with my Shizuoka debut. DJ dij is doing a special 6 hour set at a very cool music bar near Hamamatsu Station. And with so much time behind the decks, I’m going to drop everything from the new wave of the 80s to the bigroom EDM of today. This is a history lesson you won’t fall asleep during, but I might get a little tired around hour 4. So, hook a guy up with some Red Bull, will ya?! DOOR ¥1,500 (1D) and ¥500 drinks all night long

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 22:00

A 90s rock party with DJ Yamada of FILE-UNDER RECORDS, whose idea of good 90s music could be quite different from yours. Stop by his shop in Osu for an appetizer. DOOR ¥2000

Saturday 28

Cinderella Special Christmas

Studio Transit in Sakae from 22:00

This long-running party for Brazillians, the LGBT community and anyone else is celebrating Christmas with something different: a live performance from an all-new band; there’ll be some hot DJs there as well. Still have no idea where that club is, though.

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 21:00

All the clubs are gearing up for 4-days of parties, starting on Sunday. But if you want an extra day, perhaps you should pace yourself and settle for something smoother. This ska and reggae party could be just what you need. DOOR ¥2000 (1D)

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

End of the year techno and house party with guest DJ Hell from Germany. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

Sunday 29

Vinny Vintage CD Release Tour

Dreamz Bar in Sakae from 21:00
Godfather of the local hip hop scene, Vinny Vintage released his new album Runnin’ Outta Air this year, and he’s doing a multi-club tour to celebrate. You can pick up a copy, get it signed and catch Vinny and several other local MCs and DJs performing on this night. Or, at De Class on January 2nd and also LINKS Bar on the third. But the true fans of good rap music will attend all three! DOOR ¥2000 (comes with a free drink and a CD). If you bring your own copy of the CD, you get a ¥1000 discount.

Surkin and Canblaster

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00 | ¥3,500)

French producer Surkin has shifted from his earlier chiptune efforts to a sound that is more influenced by the warble and drop of dubstep. Definitive proof that not all change is good ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

RECORDSHOP ZOO 7th Anniversary

Club Zion in Kamimaezu from 15:30

Nagoya’s best R&R vinyl shop has had a very busy year, and they’re celebrating their success with another of their talent-packed live shows featuring hide-a-king, Junk Food Panic, My Shoes My Cap and many more. ADV ¥1800 / DOOR ¥2000

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

I’m a huge fan of Tokyo’s DJ EMMA’s rocking house mixes, and am always happy when he headlines this regular dance party. To be honest, his sets are some of the best you’re likely to hear at Mago, after DJ OGAWA that is. Luckily, on this night, you’ll get both big name DJs for the price of one. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500 (1D)

Monday 30

Timmy Regisford

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00 | ¥3500)

“Legendary”; there is simply no better way to describe the impact that Timmy Regisford has had on the dance music since he started his Shelter Parties in New York City back in the 90s. There’s a reason they call him “The Maestro”, and his soulful house sets are not to be missed. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500

Break Beat Dela

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

This is an impressive summit of DJs who like-a-the BOOM-BOOM-Bass, including tA.hArA, Smoker, Halcyon and so many more. At only ¥1500, which includes a free drink if you RSVP, this is the best pre-countdown party you bass-headz are going to find.

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Blue Note in Sakae from 17:00 and 20:30

DJ/producer Ryota Nozaki is famous for orchestra-filled, smooth house tracks that are so very chill. DOOR ¥6800

Tuesday 31

Countdown Party

Coat of Arms in Fushimi from 21:00

You’re going to have plenty of choices this New Year’s Eve, with the ubiquitous silly hats and crackers, but if you want to count down in style: The Obvious Circus has you covered. We will be providing the music to one of Nagoya’s only FREE countdown parties. No cover charge and ¥500 drinks until 1:00 AM at Coat of Arms. They will also have finger food and complimentary champagne at midnight. Joining DJ dij on this night is the OC’s newest DJ, Deren. This guy’s got a serious love of bass and down tempo beats, and he is a welcome addition to the Nagoya party scene. Don’t miss his debut!

New Year’s Eve Bash

Shooters in Fushimi from 21:00

Just down the street, DJ Andy S. will be doing what he does best; dropping solid mixes that make you move your body. All part of Shooters always popular NYE Bash! Lots of party foods, an open bar and a champagne toast at midnight; all for ¥3500 if you reserve now, or ¥4000 at the door

Osu Kannon Temple from Midnight

After the countdown and a night’s worth of debauchery, it couldn’t hurt to start the New Year with a clean slate. The first visit to a temple or shrine for the year is a favorite Japanese tradition, which may have something to do with the ceremonial sake being passed around. Many of Nagoya’s holy sites will be open before and after midnight, but the Osu Kanon Temple is by far the most popular destination. Be prepared to wait in line for an hour or so to ring that bell and get your omikuji, but it’s worth it. Both the crews from Coat of Arms and Shooters will be heading there, so join the OC for some warm sake!

Countdown Party

Red Rock in Sakae from 20:00

I was very disappointed to learn that the Red Rock has had to temporarily close their doors for some renovations. And while it remains to be seen how long they will be shut, we are all hoping to see them back for their rockin’ year-end party! They already got the OC’s own DJ scrying as well as the Ghost of Matsubara on deck, so if they can pull this out, it’s going to be a helluva way to count backwards from 10.

Happy New Year 2013

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00

An all-star lineup of PF DJs including Massa, Daniel Cheah, Ten, and more, with pole dancers Mia and Tida, a tried and true recipe for a damn fine night. If you’re in the east end on this night, you can do no better. DOOR ¥2000 (1D + food)

Saturday, January 4

Daniele Baldelli Japan Tour

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

Combining world music played at major speed variations with synthesizer effects, Italian producer Daniele Baldelli came up with Cosmic Disco in the late 70s. To this day, that psychedelic sound is a big influence on producers around the world. DOOR ¥4000

The Rude Pressures

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

Nagoya’s longest-running ska band kicks off the New Year with some wailing horns played over a, let’s face it, repetitious drum and guitar rhythm. DOOR ¥3000

Club JB’s in Shinsakae from 22:00

This chill dance party is turning five this month. Flagship is a party for music lovers who care more about dancing then being a part of a “scene.” ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Sunday 5

Club About in Sakae from 20:00

DJ HIEI of macrophage lab does some amazingly technical live mixes of the minimal variety. DOOR ¥2000

Monday 6

Lounge & Live VIO in Shinsakae from 18:00

Marcos Suzano is a talented percussionist and his weapon of choice is the pandeiro, which looks like a tambourine and a bongo had a love-child. The simple design of this instrument is deceiving, because the depth of sound Mr. Suzano gets from it is something you have to hear, along with several other musicians and DJs on this night. DOOR ¥3000

Wednesday 8

Austin Mahone

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 18:00

This teen pop sensation rose to fame with his 2012 hit “Say You’re Just … No. I’m sorry. No, I just can’t do this. NEXT!

The Ventures

Blue Note in Sakae from 17:00 and 20:00

You’ve probably heard the expression “Big in Japan” more than once before, as it has been used to describe a number of musicians who inexplicably attain a stronger fan base here than in their native lands. These pioneers of surf rock did it before all of the rest, and have managed over 2000 concerts here since 1965. DOOR ¥9000

Thursday 9

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 18:00

With more and more indie acts passing Nagoya by for a second show in Tokyo, getting the psychedelic neo-rock of MGMT gives me hope that 2014 won’t be all Austin Mahones. DOOR ¥6500
