The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 1/25)

CATCH-UP WITH MY HUMBLE PIE

Yeah, I talked a big game last week about staying positive in 2012, and breaking with tradition to make it better than 2011; however, only one week later, and I already find myself falling back on my bad habit of procrastination. And while I still hold my optimistic attitude towards 2012 (despite a few personal setbacks), I cannot help but wonder if it’s a Sisyphean effort… you know, Sisyphus from Greek mythology… the guy cursed to roll a rock up a hill forever… READ A BOOK!

What’s Got Me Buzz’n: FREE Admission

As much as some musicians like to flaunt the joy of VIP rooms and “champagne showers”, few, if any of us, have the means to make it rain. At best, I could make it hail 1 yen coins, but I’d have to walk home afterwards. And while the large clubs and live houses are exorbitant on even their off nights, smaller venues occasionally offer free admission for certain weekday events. Fans of great music and even greater deals will want to hit up Individual at Club About on the 25th and FRANK at Café Domina on the 31st. Both great opportunities to check out the scene for very little green (or whatever you call the color of yen)

On to the calendar!

Thursday, January 19

Hyper Space Real Junk F #65

Huck Finn in Imaike from 19:00

Huck Finn, one of Nagoya’s oldest live houses, is celebrating their 30th anniversary by hosting a number of great rock, punk and metal bands from all over the world. To learn more, check out this free night of DJs playing New Wave, punk, oldies, indie and alternative music. It’s a great chance to dip your toes in this wildest of scenes. FREE

Friday, January 20

Norman Doray

Club JB’s from 21:00

If you like your house music full of soulful vocals and soaring rises, then you are going to love this French DJs set. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Party Up vol. 11

Da! Bar in Sakae from 20:30

DJ PauloAtNight, the hardest working DJ in town, is going to be dropping his high energy mix of house, hip hop and reggaeton at this stylish and hot shots bar on the east side of town with dancers Cupie Loves Panther. WOMEN ¥1000 (2D) / MEN ¥2000 (2D)

ROTO

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 21:00

DJs Ricky, KAZ, Maiko and Matt present a very eclectic choice of 60s music at the biggest club of the East End. On this night you’ll hear frekbeat, Northern Soul, Bossanova, Garage and more. DOOR ¥1000 (1D)

Saturday, January 21

FREEEK

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00

NOW FREE FOR THE LADIES! If heaven is a non-stop rave and God really is a DJ, I like to believe the music would sound a lot like what you can hear at the FREEEK party. For these DJs, house music is less an art and more a religion. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Smash

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00
This monthly progressive house party features local-boy-done-good, DJ OGAWA and several others from his crew. DJ Andy S. and Nick Edges will also be playing. If you’ve never been to Mago before, this one is a good place to start. ADV 2000 / DOOR 2500 (1D)

Zebrahead

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 19:00

I love my job if for no other reason than it warns me that some awful bands are still making music and cannot yet be removed from THE LIST. Opening band Kids In Glass Houses, you’re on my list now, too. DOOR ¥6500

Sunday, January 22

Happy Swing

Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00

Every month, DJ MOREMIXX presents a night of digital jazz music that I assume is smooth and chill. I say “assume” because I have work on Monday mornings, and cannot be bothered to check out a 10 PM DJ party on the night before. DOOR 1500 (1D)

Overdrive

Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 17:00

This miscellaneous party is back, cheaper, earlier and, perhaps, better. Includes several DJs playing indie, ska, punk, pop and J-rock. ADV 1800 / DOOR 2000 (2D)

Wednesday, January 25

Simple Plan

Club Quattro in Sakae from 19:00

SOLD OUT… so I guess you’ll have to go elsewhere for your supply of near-punk pop. May I suggest a 13-year-old’s birthday party? DOOR ¥6300

Individual

Club About from 20:00

This club of underground sounds really deserves your attention and yen. However, if you’d rather have a taste before you commit, than hit up this night of Deep and Tech dance music. It starts early and it’s free. You really don’t have any more excuses not to go.
