DREAMING OF A NAG CHRISTMAS
December is literally right around the corner, and I know that many of you are migrating anywhere but here for the holiday season while the more stalwart of us will brave the Japanese winter. For those misguided few, make sure you pick up the NAG MAG December issue due out next week. The holiday guide within will be a life-saver, in that it is so full of things to do and places to go that cabin fever won’t have a chance to set in, and you won’t have to murder your loved ones with an axe.
WHAT’S GOT ME LAFF’n:
Far be it from me to send you anywhere else for your funnies when you have me, but this CRACKED article had me laughing out loud at my desk (much to the bemusement of my coworkers). Besides the writer’s unabashed knowledge of the porn industry here and back home, his insightful sendup of life in Japan is as amusing as it is eye-opening. It is now required reading for any foreigner considering life in Japan (as is NAG MAG!!!)
On to the calendar!
Café Domina in Sakae from 22:00
Besides being the only decent thing going down musically tonight, this event features W-Double’s talented DnB resident DJ Smoker. What separates this gig from his many, many other appearances this month, is that he is performing alongside MC yukako… oh, and they’re serving avocado dishes. ADV ¥1000 DOOR ¥1500
KC Bar in Sakae from 18:00
Let me be quite clear here: this seasonal party offers of some of the best music being produced in Aichi today. Host Vinny Vintage is a good friend of mine and I really respect his promotion of local live music. This is the best party to start your December off right, and check out this cool new bar in the heart of Sakae. Featuring performances from new RnB star Chris J, Vinny himself and several other musicians and DJs, DJ scrying will be there ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500
Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00
For the uninitiated, this event is pronounced “OARO”… which isn’t really all that much clearer. However, DJs Yamica and Jiroazumi absurdly-named house and techno party manages to pull in some amazing guest DJs. This month they’ve brought back Ministry of Sound resident, Radio Slave. An amazing producer, Radio Slave has remixed the work of legendary artist like Armand Van Helden and Josh Wink, and won several awards for his talent. DOOR ¥3000
ALWAYS THIS vol.4
Club Zion in Kamimaezu from 18:00
Always a great place to check out new, loud music, Zion is playing host to my favorite rock-a-billy band, Duck and the Billys along with Kogarashi and Soul of Liberty. ADV ¥2000 / DOOR ¥2500
Standbar Junction in Sakae from 19:00
DJ Take of Project Stroke has opened his own bar in the heart of Sakae’s nightlife, and to celebrate he’s presenting a special edition of his long-running love-letter to house music, Wanna Be Child. With all the amazing guest DJs he’s brought in, including Andy S., all for FREE, you can’t miss this one. Junction is set to become the place to begin and end all your wild nights in Sakae.
Club Mago in Shinsakae from 23:00
This famous DJ is bringing his Japan tour to Nagoya this Saturday. I should clarify. He’s a trance DJ, so his famousness is limited to wherever trance is still popular, or wherever cosmetic drugs are abundant.
Club Buddha in Shinsakae from 18:00
DJ Noiri from Bang the Drum and several other RandR DJs playing, what else, rock of the indie and J- variety. ADV ¥1800 / DOOR 2000 (2D)
Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:30
All hail the glorious funk rock of this New Orleans band and their new album, which is full of smooth tracks featuring guest appearances by Mystikal and Corey Glover of Living Colour. DOOR ¥6,500
Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00
This grindcore band is also from Louisiana, but that’s where their similarities with Galactic end. Not that they’re without their own glamour. Like the sirens of old, lead singer Courtney LaPlante will lull you with her dulcet tones, before blasting your brain meats with a shattering scream you wouldn’t think possible in such a cute package. DOOR ¥5000
Scorpion Death Rock
Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00
DJs MOTOKI, RYO, YO-HEY, NAO take everything that was great about the 1950s, the music and the fashion, and leave out the bad, like the Cold War and racism. This party always has a good number of cats and kittens from Nagoya Swings tearing it up on the dance floor! DOOR ¥1500
