The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 12/19)

It never fails. The closer I get to the end of the year, the more my SAD tries to ruin this normally festive season for me. No matter how many bonenkai I attend, or toasts I raise, I cannot seem to shake these winter blues. However, just when my mood begins to match the dreary weather outside, the Nagoya community comes through with another weekend packed-full of the only sure-fire cure for December despair: loud music and lots of it.

On to the calendar!

Friday, December 16

BORIS Japan Tour

Club Upset in Imaike from 18:00

This influential experimental rock band may have released 3 albums this year, but it is their latest, Attention Please, which has really grabbed my, er, attention. It’s coupling of power chords with the melancholic vocals of the lovely Wata keep me at the perfect mix of ecstatic and gloomy. Eternal Elysium, also from Tokyo, will be opening with their hard rock for stoners. DOOR ¥3000

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

JUNKY @ Club JB’s (22:00 | ¥3000)

Tokyo DJs TAAR, Kosuke Adam and many others are taking over Nagoya’s coolest nightspot for a night of electro and techno music.  ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000 (1D)

Timeline Japan Tour

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

As part of Underground Resistance, a pro-active branch of the Detroit Techno scene, Timeline’s mix of club beats and smooth jazz greatly underscores the depth of their influence on today’s music as well as the political ideals the group stands for. DOOR ¥4000

Toys For Tohoku

MyBar in Sakae from 18:00

This party is your last chance to donate a toy for the children left without much after the triple disaster earlier this year. As we head into 2012, we must not forget that there is still so much we need to do for Tohoku, and we can all start now, helping to bring a Merry Christmas to those who really could use one. One free drink for everyone who brings a present. DJ M will be spinning on this night as well.

Saturday, December 17

Devil Sound Mania

Club 3 Star in Kurumamichi from 18:00

NOTE: this all rock event is notat the 3 Star in Imaike, but the lesser known one on the Sakura-dori subway line. Local rockabilly legends Duck and the Billys seem a bit out of place amongst all the big hair rock of Acc Driver and the Trigger Junkiez, but find comfort in the fact that you can always leave after Harry, Yu and the others finish up. ADV ¥1800 / DOOR ¥2000

Jaytech Japan Tour

Club About in Sakae from 21:00

Progressive house DJ Jaytech produces energetic music that makes me want to dance, which forces me to reconsider my understanding of the term “progressive”. ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Nagoya Mixer Christmas Party

The Red Rock in Sakae from 18:00

To further dispel my end-of-the-year blahs, I’m going to start my Saturday off with the party-providers of the Nagoya Mixer party. I plan on spinning my favorite dance, rock and pop tracks from 2011 all night long, so stop by and join me for some good music, good people and good food. ADV ¥3000 / DOOR ¥3500 (includes 3 hours of all you can eat and drink). Reserve today online at or by email to

Mother Fucker X’mas vol.2

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 20:00

Leave it to the Plastic Factory to have the weirdest way to celebrate the Christmas season ever with this night of cosplay and body art. On first glance, the non-threatening J-rap of Glory Jackpot System seems to be average fare for a night in Nagoya. However, upon further inspection of their strangely erotic (for all the wrong reasons) flier, you find that there is a DRESS CODE. If you don’t come in full cosplay regalia, you are asked to wear a red or white T-shirt; which probably will not survive the night unpainted. So, make sure it doesn’t hold any sentimental value. This one is going to be weird and wild. DOOR ¥2500 (1D)

Dance Craze

Club Buddha in Shinsake from 21:00

The Mod-maniacs return to Buddha with a soundtrack full of the groovy sounds of the 50s and 60s and that hip Mad Men fashion. ADV 2000 (2D) / DOOR 2000 (1D)

One Nation

Plus Park in Sakae from 21:00

This night of top hip hop and RnB DJs plus live performances from Vinny Vintage, MDG and Foundation will go a long way to convince Nagoya that Plus Park is, in fact, still open for business. DOOR ¥2000

Black Berry

Gen’s 2nd in Sakae from 23:00

Over the past few months, Gen’s 2nd has changed from a nice place to have dinner to an even nicer late night destination for a growing crowd of club kids. Check it out for yourself this Saturday with DJ PauloAtNight backed by resident DJs I Cue and 034, along with several guest performers  MEN ¥ 2500 (3D) / WOMEN ¥1500 ( 2D )

Sunday, December 18

Amber/Copal Workshop

Five minutes from Mizuho Kuyakusho Station

There are four days of workshop this month; December 17, 18, 23 and 24 with two classes each day. Their is only room for 10 people at each lesson, and the space are filling up fast. So contact Michael right away on Facebook. Cost ¥1000 and you only have to bring a towel; Michael will provide the rest. Respect or Die! Vol. 51

Café Domina in Sakae from 20:00

If you’re looking for a DJ event this Sunday, this eclectic mix of techno, house, and electro from several DJs is probably your best bet. They usually have an impressive live art show as well, along with special live performances or guest DJs. 1500 (1D)

Velvet Sunday

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

DJs jin, Takashi and Shigeta play some smooth house mixes or a chill way to spend the Sunday before the holiday.  ADV 1500/ DOOR 2000 (1D)
