The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 12/16)

The Nagoya Players is Aichi’s longest active English-language theatre troupe. For over 40 years they have provided actors, directors, writers, dancers, designers and anyone who loves the dramatic arts a place to come together to create stories that all can enjoy. I am very excited to see their newest production, Psychic, this weekend. If you are looking for something beyond the norm, away from the loud bars and crowded clubs, then perhaps you crave the cathartic release that only a bit of culture can provide. And if that doesn’t cure what ails you, you can always get sloshed after the show.

On to the calendar!

Friday 11

Nanjare Theater in Nagoya for 6 shows
The Nagoya Players winter production, Psychic, explores the relationship between a spiritual medium and the grief-stricken people he cons. Packed with a plethora of complex twists and turns, this locally-written show will keep audiences absorbed. Performed in English with Japanese subtitles, the show opens at the Nanjare Theater this Friday and runs through the 12th and 13th. Advanced tickets are ¥2000 or ¥2500 at the door. RSVP you ticket now by emailing

Ringo Deathstarr
Tight Rope in Sakae from 19:00
Despite their most metal of names, this Austin-based band’s indie-pop is more psychedelic than psychotic. DOOR ¥5500

R. City
iD Café in Sakae from 19:00
After years writing and producing hit songs for stars like Rhianna, Nicki Minaj and Sean Kingston, the Thomas brothers, A.I. and Uptown AP, are ready to take the clubs by storm with their new LP What Dreams Are Made Of. The worldwide release party is stopping over at iD on this night, but I cannot promise the duo themselves will be there. Nagoya has a weird habit of holding CD release parties for bands that are not in attendance. DOOR ¥2000

Saturday 12

The Nagoya Metro Club
Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00
A belated Happy Birthday to Nagoya’s most famous gay, lesbian and all dance party! For 11 years, Madame d’Metro and her fabulous merrymakers have created an energetic atmosphere that is accepting of everyone. If you find yourself away from your loved ones this winter, you are welcome to join the Metro family at their “HoliGay” festival. DOOR ¥2500 (2D)

Christmas Show
Plastic Factory in Imaike from 17:00
While I do enjoy fried chicken and love hotels, a Japanese-style Christmas just doesn’t offer any solace to those stuck here over the holidays. However, Brian Cullen, Sarah Mulvey and other local musicians will be serving up a number of classic holiday songs and stories on this night to help soothe the homesick. And if the spirit moves you, feel free to join them on stage with your own yuletide yarn. DOOR ¥1500

Super Karaoke
GC Live in Shinsakae from 19:00
The GC Live Zombies are back with their popular event where anyone can join them on stage to sing-along to any tune from their extensive catalogue of crowd favorites. And since ‘tis the season, you can expect a hearty selection of carols, jingle bells and just so many renditions of “Fairytale of New York”. DOOR ¥2000

X-Hall in Osu from 20:00
Since its heyday in the 90s, trance music has spent the last few decades banished to Eastern European clubs and pachinko parlors. But a recent resurgence in that seizure-inducing sound has found its way to our shore. X-Hall alone is hosting several trance events this month, starting with American DJs Stryker and Mad Maxx under their new moniker Wild Monkeys. DOOR ¥3500

Sunday 13

Winter Session
Shooters in Fushimi from 20:00

Monday 14

Juicy M
Club ORCA in Sakae from 19:00
Making monster mashups live, Ukrainian producer Juicy M’s performances are epic. The always packed ORCA is going to get mental during her set.
