The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 12/07)

W.T.F.F.!

The beginning of the month is usually scarce pickings when it comes to things to do in Nagoya. Luckily, that is not the case for this weekend, well, for the most part. Starting with the 1st and heading well into next week, there is any number of concerts, parties, exhibits and festivals to be enjoyed at your leisure. And then there’s this Friday, December 2; a day I got f%and# all to recommend to you. Notice that I am not saying there is “nothing to do”, I’m just lamenting the fact that what there is to do isn’t worth the doing. When compared to all the greatness occurring this first weekend of December, you’re best bet for Friday is to not even bother.

On to the calendar!

Thursday, December 1

James Goater Exhibit

Daikokuya Gallery in Sakae until December 6

Local painter and one of the best supporters of the local art community, James Goater, will be showing his beautifully detailed “portraits” of Edo era architecture. This nice bit of beauty and culture is a welcome change of pace from the things I usually write about, so enjoy it while it is here. The exhibit runs every day until next Tuesday, and it is the one thing worth doing on Friday. The Daikokuya Gallery is located opposite the Washington Hotel, which is a three-minute walk from Sakae Subway Exit 1.

758 Thursday Live

Plus Park in Sakae from 21:00

It’s good to see Plus Park thinking outside of their up-to-this-point very tiny box. It’s a wonder they’ve managed to stay open for so long using the same recipe that all the other clubs in that area use: play hip hop all the time, rinse, repeat. However, this new weekly showcase of live artist is a game changer, and I am hoping it will breathe some fresh life into this night spot. Each week a select group of musicians will be featured, including Jerry-I, Vinny Vintage, MDG and more. And though they are all hip hop artists, there may be room for an open mic. So, anyone is welcome to stop by for the chance to get on stage. WOMEN FREE / MEN ¥1000

F%and# ALL TO DO!

Saturday, December 3

Culture Crossover Party

X-Hall in Osu from 22:00

SWEET LORD! DJ Kissy Sell Out is coming to Nagoya! His lightning fast electro sets are stuff of London-club-legends, and his remixes have been at the top of many DJs playlists for several years. X-Hall, you are my new church! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!  DOOR ¥3500

Shonen Knife 30th Anniversary Show

Club Upset in Ikeshita from 18:00

30 years! This punk band has been rocking out for longer than most of our readers have been alive. That’s impressive for an all-female group no matter what country they’re from. So, congrats to Naoko-chan on this momentous occasion. Banana Chipsu for everyone! DOOR ¥3000

Black Berry

Gen’s 2nd in Sakae from 23:00

Over the past few months, Gen’s 2nd has changed from a nice place to have dinner to an even nicer late night destination for a growing crowd of club kids. Check it out for yourself this Saturday with DJ PauloAtNight backed by resident DJs I Cue and 034, along with several guest performers

SMASH

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 22:00

This monthly progressive house party features local-boy-done-good, DJ OGAWA and several others from his crew. DJ Andy S. will also be playing in the back room for the first time. So, congrats to him for landing such a great gig. If you’ve never been to Mago before, this one is a good place to start. ADV 2000 / DOOR 2500 (1D)

Speed Dating

The Red Rock in Sakae from 18:00

The party-providers at Nagoya Friends may have changed the locale for their speed dating party, but it is still one of the best chances for singles to meet the right person… or people depending how well you do in the 15 minutes you have to speak to each other person attending. ADV 2500 (men) and 2000 (women) / DOOR +500 yen (includes 1 free drink plus food)

RAN Music Café

Plastic Factory in Imaike from 22:00
I still haven’t made it out to this new night of music at the Factory, which is easily in the top 3 of my favorite clubs in town. However, being that it is hosted by DJ Maddlove, I am certain it is a scene in the making. DOOR 1000 (1D)

BIOC x A/X

Radix in Tsurumai from 22:00

*SIGH* Since The Art Of War went on hiatus, I just can’t manage to get excited about the BIOC parties anymore. Sure, resident DJ Akira Saotome is an amazing purveyor of techno music, and he always books equally talented artists, still… it’s just not the same. Oh, well. Perhaps this team up with Armani Exchange (do they still sell clothes?) will add some much needed spice to this once great event. ADV 2500 / DOOR 3000 (1D)

Sunday, December 4

JOY

Café Domina in Sakae from 21:00
This wild party has been on hiatus for a bit, but their back with more crazy Japanese techno (think of the music you hear blaring when the doors of a pachinko parlor open), hardcore and gabber mixes from the regular JOY DJs with special guests Shimamura from Tokyo. DOOR ¥1500

The New Mastersounds

Club Quattro in Sakae from 17:00

Recorded in Texas, The New Mastersounds latest LP Breaks From The Border has a definitely unique sound compared to their previous work. I guess that makes it the NEW New Mastersounds. Ha-ha. DOOR ¥6000

Monday, December 5

French Films Japan Tour

Club Rock’N’Roll in Shinsakae from 18:30

And speaking of “new” here comes French Films from Finland whose new album Imaginary Future does a damn fine job of encapsulating the New Wave sound that is making, what must be, it’s 5th reincarnation. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! ADV ¥2500 / DOOR ¥3000

Tuesday, December 6

Double Titans Tour

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

As much as I enjoy French Films, they just don’t represent what most people consider to be Nordic rock music. Luckily, The Haunted (Sweden), Leprous and Ihsahn (Norway) and their increasingly bleak metal music will pick up the slack (and then hang their selves with it). DOOR ¥6800

Wednesday, December 7

Scorpion Death Rock

Club JB’s in Sakae from 21:00

DJs MOTOKI, RYO, YO-HEY, NAO take everything that was great about the 1950s, the music and the fashion, and leave out the bad, like the Cold War and racism. This party always has a good number of cats and kittens from Nagoya Swings tearing it up on the dance floor! DOOR 1500

Steve Appleton

Club Quattro in Sakae from 18:00

This young British musician and his disturbingly bubbly pop songs must be stopped. That is all. DOOR ¥5500
