The Obvious Circus Events Calendar (Until 1/18)

New Years Revolutions

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.  Better then fine!  In fact, I feel elated, euphoric, ecstatic, energetic and other exciting e-words.  Less than 2 weeks into 2012, and the potential is inspiring.  To be completely honest, I’m not sure how much of this… exhilaration (oh, there’s another good one!) is based on facts, and how much of it comes from wishful-thinking.  But I am hopeful that our growing village will rise to the possibilities that this New Year holds.  Let’s have more creativity and less negativity, more charity and less vulgarity, more Nagoy-YAH and less Nagoy-nah (OK, that was terrible).  My point is, 2012 could be exactly like 2011, or you could resolve to make it better and get more involved in the community.  There’ll be plenty of chances, and I’ll do my best to let you know about them.  Happy New Year!

What’s Got Me Buzz’n: theatre

It’s a good year to be a Thespian in Nagoya!  No, I said “Thespian”; it’s another word for actor.  Get your brain out of the gutter!  Starting with this weekend’s production of PROOF, not to mention the other great shows Nameless Theatre has on their schedule for 2012, there are a number of excellent opportunities to see, or get involved with, the stage this year.  There’s The Elevator, an original play being produced at the Red Rock, and Nagoya’s oldest international company, The Nagoya Players are returning with another dinner theatre show on May 4-6.  On top of all that, a number of excited touring shows are headed for Nagoya this year, including the martial-arts-filled comedy, JUMP from Korea, opening next month.

On to the calendar!

Electric Culture Centre in Fushimi from 19:00

From the people who brought you the web-series English Teachers and last year’s popular performance of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged, Nameless Media, comes a staged production of this Tony and Pulitzer Award-winning drama by David Auburn.  Featuring some of the most talented actors in our community, this powerful play is an excellent start to their promising 2012 season.  Five shows: Jan 13th 19:00, Jan 14th 14:00 and 19:00, Jan 15th 14:00 and 18:00.  ADV¥2500 / DOOR¥3000, student prices available

EPOCH 00/01

Huck Finn in Imaike from 19:30

You can always trust Huck Finn to come up with the most perplexing event names that in no way pertain to the actual band’s performing.  The bill this night includes POP-OFFICE, a local band that’s been playing on my iPhone since I discovered them late last year.  Love Will Tear Us Apart, Climb The Mind and helpme will also be there.  Door¥2500

Gen’s 2nd in Sakae from 23:00
Before he ignites the dance floor at the Secret Sexy on Saturday, DJ PauloAtNight will be joining several others for a night of the best RandB, hip hop and House of this still very New Year.  WOMEN¥1000 (2D) | MEN¥2000 (3D)

The Secret Sexy

Gen’s 2nd in Sakae from 19:00

The Sexy parties made a huge impact on the Nag-scene in 2011, and their starting 2012 off with a clandestine twist: a chance to win 2 iPod Nanos if you can impress the crowd with your sexy style, whether through dress, dance or however you get your sexy on. DJs PauloAtNight, JUNK, dij and Nagoya’s best pole dancers will all be performing on this night. DOOR¥2000

No Woman No Cry

Music Bar Bob in Kamimaezu from 19:30

This new joint has shot to the top of my list of favorite things of 2012 by being both a new sound bar and the host of the only all-female performers night I am aware of, twice a month even!  The inaugural night features the soulful Lyco from Osaka with a number of equally talented Nagoyans .DOOR¥2300

Nagoya Metro Party

Lover:Z in Shinsakae from 22:00

To help ring in the year of the dra-queen (see what I did there?), Nagoya’s longest running all-of-the-above-sexual party is going to be more fabulous than ever this month with the wildest floorshow in town and the hottest dance music from DJ e-M and the rest of the Metro crew.  DOOR¥2500 (2D)

Club Rock’N’Roll from 19:00

Local indie rock quartet with their first major label release with plenty of guitar-heavy J-rock for fans of Asian Kung-Fu Generation.  DOOR¥2500

X-Hall in Osu from 22:00

I recently had the honor of playing at X-Hall, and, I have to admit, I was impressed.  It’s a stylish club with a booming sounds system, a spacious dance floor and a chill sound-proof VIP room.  It’s a much-needed oasis in the desert of nightlife that is the Osu area after 21:00.  If X-Hall continues to pull in the talent, like this night of 16 DJs from Tokyo and Nagoya plus a harem of beautiful dancers, than I predict it will become the hottest club of 2012.  With flyer¥2500 / DOOR¥3000 (1D)

Club Mago in Shinsakae from 23:00

This unfortunately-named techno party features the minimal sounds of Jens Zimmerman.  ADV¥2500 / DOOR¥3500

Sunday, January 15

Nagoya Swings Workshop

Shooters in Fushimi from 19:30

Nagoya’s only international jazz dance group is starting off the New Year with a great chance for anyone to get involved in this escalating scene.  They’re offering 2 bi-lingual introductory lessons for only¥500.  This is the best way to get introduced to ballroom dance styles such as East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop and the Charleston.  Singles and couples are all welcome.

Diamond Hall in Shinsakae from 17:00

With their crowd-pleasing renditions of rock classics such as Welcome To The Jungle, this young duo does for the cello what Yo-Yo Ma in his infinite talent never could; make it cool. DOOR¥6900

Velvet Sunday

Club JB’s in Sakae from 22:00

DJs jin, Takashi and Shigeta play some smooth house mixes for a chill way to spend your Sunday evening.  ADV 1500/ DOOR 2000 (1D)

Wednesday, January 18

Fleet Foxes

Club Quattro in Sakae from 19:00

The Grammy-nominated goodness that is their newest album is a damn fine reason for me to put aside my Quattro-boycott for another week.  I’m a sucker for beautifully crafted baroque folk.   DOOR¥6300

Pet Bottle Ningen

K.D. Japon in Tsurumai from 19:00

Unfortunately, I am also a sucker for experimental jazz, and this trio creates a sound that could only be birthed on the creative streets on downtown NYC; ultramodern, rule-breaking and chotto terrifying.  DOOR¥2500
